Today we visited Bird Island in Lamberts Bay. What a mind blowing experience! Thousands of Cape Gannets in one area! This is definitely must see! R40 per person entrance fee to Cape Nature.

Bird Island lies about 100m off the shore of Lambert's Bay on the Cape's West Coast. It offers visitors a rare opportunity to see the blue-eyed Cape gannet up close. Bird Island is one of only six sites world-wide where Cape gannets breed, and it is the only breeding site easily accessible to the public.

The island, which is almost three hectares in size, is connected to the mainland via a breakwater. It is an important breeding and roosting site for seabirds, particularly Cape gannets and cormorants. Cape fur seals can be seen sunning themselves on the island’s rocks.

Summary of our trip so far

Freaking Awesome!

This holiday, well few holidays back i got promoted from the Entertainment to Admin so I get to sort of make a choice on where we go... well, its a team effort really.

So this holiday we started off in Pietermaritzburg visiting family (incase we get lost and don't make it home). In this trip we planned to try and do a full circle.
So from Pietermaritzburg we went to Golden Gate in Freestate. What a great time we had there ! We did some hiking (we definitely need to go back to gym), we saw either a museum piece or mummified wildebeest at the vulture feeding site. We had incredible sighting of a Bearded Vulture a few Km up in the sky. We did tick off alot of birds ! Most importantly had many great laughs!

From Golden Gate it was off to Mokala National Park in Kimberly.

OMG LOVE IT !

Our campsite was right in front of the water hole and unfenced. We had Buffalo, kudu, warthog, Hartebeest, tsessebe, zebra etc all coming in to drink and check us out. You can also book for a night drive which we did and we saw Bat Eared Fox and Rhinos.
It was exceptionally hot in Mokala, poor Bugs was even hotter with me next to him...he was on fire....

From Mokala it was onto Springbok for a night's stop over before heading out to the Richtersveld.

The Richtersveld, where do I begin. What a hoot.. well now we laughing but not then. The road to Sendelingsdrif was well hell. Corrugation due to mining trucks. We eventually arrived at the gate where very friendly ladies checked us in and then happily informed us.. "you still have 76km to go because you have a trailer you will have to go the long way round."

So before we set off on our merry way we had to fill the trailer with extra water... we must of had an airlock because it sounded like a person was being waterborded. After that embarrassing sound we set off, happy and excited!

Feelings of happiness and excitement soon turned to a feelling of wtf have we gotten into and oh s**t no.... no problem though we did 76km in 3 and a half hours🙄

Eventually we arrived at our campsite, tired, stressed and miserable...but... we did have an awesome stay there! We swam and fished in the orange river and saw some amazing succulents.
On our last day there a park ranger stopped by and said we should take Hellskloof out of the park it's on 53km and you can get out with a trailer. YESSSSS!

SO off we set .. well of course it didn't take 3 and a half hours to do 53km it took 4hrs... yip 53km took longer than 76km.

Just before we arrived in Alexander bay we had a blow out. Can you freaking believe it. Anyway, I cheered bugs on and gave him moral support as he changed the tyre.

From Alexander Bay we went to Kleinzee for the evening. What a lovely little campsite. From there we are now in Hondeklip and had a romantic walk on the beach as windy as hell and had such a fabulous seafood dinner last night! This place is really special and the owners of honne- pondokkie are absolutely Fabulous!

Tomorrow it's off to Namaqua Park for 2 days !

The Aristea, an old trawler, served as a minesweeper during World War II but could not survive the onslaught of her tipsy captain. The Aristea ran aground just south of Hondeklip Bay in 1945.

Honne Pondokkies in Hondeklip. What a interesting little beach town. When arrived yesterday morning there was no one around the town. By afternoon it was holiday makers everywhere! This seems to be the Hotspot for people looking for a beach holiday. They say by Monday it will be packed ! So good to see!

Witsand is situated at the foot of the Langberg Mountains. The rocks forming the Landberg are estimated to be between 1900 and 2050 million years old.

Witsand covering these formations is much younger- only about 65 million years old. The sands form part of the Kalahari group. These sands can be almost half a kilometer deep at places.

The Roaring sand or Brulsand is the main feature of Witsand reserve. In order to emit their characteristic sound, which may vary from a hum or a roar, the sand needs to be warm, dry and clean.

Mokala 10 out of 10!

What an incredible stay at Mokala ! The Campsite has only 6 sites each situated around the waterhole unfenced. Each has its own kitchen with fridge and bathroom. The shower can fit 4 people in it ! It really is a beautiful campsite.

We had Buffalo, Hartebeest, Tsessebe, Zebra, Gemsbok, Springbuck, Impala, Kudu and moongoose, baboon etc visit our waterhole. It was such a treat!

The game drives were also great with good birding. We also went on a night drive last night and saw Aardwolf, bat-eared fox, porcupine, rhino etc

We highly recommend Mokala !
