A study found the species well distributed across the country, indicating that India's leopard population is "quite healthy".

India finally has an estimate of its most populous and elusive large predator, the leopard. The first ever count of India’s leopards, conducted alongside last year’s tiger census, has put the spotted cat population at 7,910 in and around tiger habitats across the country, except the northeast.

Nocturnal animals are active during the night and sleep during the day. They genreally have highly developed senses of hearing and smell, and mostly specially adapted eyesight. Some nocturnal animals have eyes that can adapt to both low-level and bright day levels of illumination and are known as metaturnal, whereas others, such as the bushbaby, can function only at night. Many nocturnal creatures have large eyes in comparison to their body size in order to compensate for the lower light levels during the night.
Being nocturnal certainly has its advantages, for instance in hotter countries like Namibia it is much cooler to venture out at night and of course it is easier to hide from predators under the cover of darkness.
