Giraffes are often accompanied by oxpeckers, industrious birds that greedily take advantage of any burrowing parasites embedded in the animals’ skin. It’s mostly a symbiotic relationship: giraffes tolerate the fluttering birds in exchange for the removal of ticks, blood-sucking flies, fleas and lice. But oxpeckers also feast on blood and have been known to pluck at open wounds, hindering the healing process (not to mention they can be something of an irritant).
