Giraffes are often accompanied by oxpeckers, industrious birds that greedily take advantage of any burrowing parasites embedded in the animals’ skin. It’s mostly a symbiotic relationship: giraffes tolerate the fluttering birds in exchange for the removal of ticks, blood-sucking flies, fleas and lice. But oxpeckers also feast on blood and have been known to pluck at open wounds, hindering the healing process (not to mention they can be something of an irritant).⁣

Located in the middle of the Zambezi River at the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, Mosi-Oa-Tunya, or The Smoke that Thunders, is a remarkable natural wonder. Better known as Victoria Falls, it is a must-see on any journey to Zimbabwe or Zambia.

Did you know?
💦 It is the largest curtain of falling water in the world.
💦 It is 1708m wide.
💦 It is 108m tall at its highest point.
💦 With a spray plume of about 500m in height, it can be seen from 50km away.
💦 You can see the falls from two countries: Zimbabwe and Zambia.
💦 It is one of the seven natural wonders of the world; the others are the Aurora Borealis, the Harbour of Rio de Janeiro, the Grand Canyon, the Great Barrier Reef, Mount Everest, and Parícutin.
💦 500 million litres of water cascade over the falls every minute.
💦 It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

His outline painted yellow with the glow of an African sunrise, this lion watched intently as the rest of the pride began to stir. Lions usually move in cooler temperatures, preferring to spend the hottest hours of the day resting in the shade, reserving their energy for nocturnal hunting and prowling. When this male reaches maturity, he'll leave the safety of the pride to stake out a territory of his own, a quest that may take him several kilometres from his current home. Sadly, lion habitats are shrinking, and these big cats are finding it increasingly difficult to find suitable roaming grounds with high densities of prey. Conflict with humans often leads to persecution for lions, and population numbers across the continent are plummeting as conservationists search for sustainable ways to live alongside these apex predators.⁣

Male lions may have the bulk of the brawn and brute in the pride, but lionesses can certainly hold their own if they need to. When the advances of a male became too much for this matriarch, she asserted her dominance, swiping and snarling at the overeager lion. Pride life is governed by females. They travel together, define territories, and carry out much of the hunting. Males may look the part, but lionesses do the heavy lifting. ⁣

Cats – big and small – have an almost insatiable curiosity. This young male couldn't resist the urge to clamber onto a dusty mound and taunt his siblings from his new-found vantage point. Lions are not the most skilled climbers, especially adult males whose heavyset bodies are built for brawn, not agility. But cubs and subadults will readily take on the challenge. As this youngster's patchy mane starts to fill out and he grows into his giant paws, he'll probably be less inclined to climb and instead turn his attention to other pursuits like securing a pride and territory of his own.⁣⁣

Life on the African savannah is largely governed by the predictable rhythms of nature – summer giving way to winter, drought-ravaged landscapes transforming into lush grasslands following long-awaited rains, and day succumbing to night. Each evening, Africa's nocturnal creatures wait for the inevitable darkness when they emerge to hunt and forage. Hyenas are most active during the night – their cackling calls cutting through the blackness and rising to a shrieking soundtrack so iconic of the African bush.⁣

It may look aggressive, but this display was more playful than hostile. Elephants are highly social animals, and moments of affection or playfulness are a regular part of life in the herd. For these tuskers in Kenya's Maasai Mara, a high-spirited head rub involved some manoeuvring to avoid any unwanted ivory-induced puncture wounds. The elephants in this part of the world owe their size and huge teeth to a lineage of exceptional genes. Sadly, there are not many of these giants left. And if they go, they take their tusker genes with them. ⁣

Masters of the plains.⁣

Full-maned and exceedingly stately, these dominant males are the rulers of this swathe of Kenyan savannah. While females and cubs usually spend much of their time together, male leaders of the pride are often preoccupied with scent-marking their domain, roaring menacingly to make their presence known, and chasing off rivals that wander onto their turf.⁣

Leopards, like many cat species, are nocturnal and prefer to do their prowling under the cover of darkness. As the sun slipped below the horizon, washing the sky in brilliant orange, this leopardess stirred from her resting place in the boughs of a tree and began her descent. When the night sets in, she'll go on the hunt, slinking through the blackness like a ghost. But she's not the only predator that stalks in the night, and she'll need to keep her wits about her to avoid clashing with lions or hyenas.⁣

Did you know?

The Victoria Falls were formed more than 70 000 years ago after the gushing water of the Zambezi River, which flowed over hard basalt with large cracks filled with weaker sandstone, eroded the softer rock to create a deep chasm which became a waterfall.

Victoria Falls has a rich history, with evidence of dinosaurs in the region as far back as 200 million years ago, followed by now extinct mammals such as buffalo with 3m horns, a short-necked giraffe with antlers and the African mammoth elephant.

A large collection of late stone age tools has also been found around Victoria Falls, showing evidence of early man.The early Homo Sapiens in the area were San Bushmen and after the Bantu Migration down from west and east Africa, they were joined by the Tonga, Lozi and latterly the Nambya people, before the Ndebele came up from the south.

In 1855 Scottish explorer and missionary David Livingstone became the first European to see Victoria Falls and named them after his Queen, bringing them to the attention of the world, after which the falls became a major tourist attraction.
