Isn't he magnificent?
Did you know...
* Black-maned lions are more appealing to potential mates than lions with a lighter coloured mane. The size and coloration of the mane serves as a signal to show the male lion's fitness, much like a peacock's tail.
* Black-maned lions produce more testosterone than other lions, which often makes them stronger. It is said that cubs with dark-maned fathers have a better survival rate than their blonde counterparts.
* Dark hairs by nature are thicker, so therefore trap more heat in. The darker surface also absorbs more solar heat which makes the black-maned lions better adapted to the environment of the Kalahari Desert.
