Fort Namutoni was built in 1896 as a German police post and , as part of the so - called Red Line, a veterinary control point. The fort was later used to hold English prisoners in World War 1. The original fort was destroyed in 1904 and rebuilt a year or two later and now largely serves as a lodge and a stopover to the Etosha National Park.

SPOTLIGHT ON: NAMUTONI CAMP

Namutoni Camp in the Etosha National Park is quite a unique experience. The camp is built into an old German colonial fort and within there are plenty facilities and accommodation options for visitors. The camp is located in the eastern Etosha and is accessible via the Von Lindequist Gate. Its close proximity to Fishers’ Pan makes Namutoni Camp a birdwatchers’ paradise.

Namutoni was originally established as a control post during the mad cow disease epidemic of 1897 in the former German South West Africa. The fort was built and completed in 1903 and in 1950 became a national monument. The presence of this fort undoubtedly gives Namutoni more character than the other rest camps inside the park. Namibia Wildlife Resorts took over the management of the camp from government in 1999.

Guests are offered three kinds of accommodation: 20 chalets (spacious, en-suite bathroom; patio; outdoor shower; mini-bar; air-conditioning; tea/ coffee station; mosquito nets), 24 double rooms (same facilities as chalets excluding patio) and 25 camping sites (spacious sites; plug points; communal ablution building)

Facilities: two restaurants; bush bar; craft shop; bookshop; swimming pool; viewing deck; superette; petrol station; laundry; Namutoni Camp doesn’t have telephone reception, Wi-Fi, TV or radio in any of the chalets or rooms

Activities: on-site museum; game drives (self-drive or guided); birdwatching; viewing deck on King Nehale’s Waterhole

Location: Namutoni is 113km northwest of Tsumeb, 184km southeast of Oshakati and 222km northeast of Outjo. CAMP RENOVATIONS AT NAMUTONI

Over the past few weeks Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) has received numerous enquiries pertaining to the current renovations being undertaken at Namutoni Camp in the Etosha National Park. It is with his in mind that NWR would like to sensitise its visitors and tour operators about the current state of the campsite.

Due to the popularity of Namutoni, NWR saw the need to renovate the camp in order to bring it on par with their other establishments. They hoped that the much-needed renovations would cause the least amount of discomfort to their clients by doing them during their low season - but they were unable to finish in time.

NWR’s contractors informed them that, withing the coming months the renovations should be completed. NWR would appreciate their clients’ patience and understanding during this time as they work toward providing visitors with the service you expect from NWR.

For more information, consult NWR’s website (www.nwr.com.na) or send an email to [email protected].
