Ready to spot some of Namibia's most elegant residents? 🦒✨

Did you know? 🤓 🌿

Tongue Tricks: Giraffes have a prehensile tongue that can be up to 45 cm long! They use it to skillfully pluck leaves from thorny trees like acacias.
💤 Power Nappers: These gentle giants only need about 30 minutes of sleep a day, often taken in short naps while standing.
💬 Silent Communicators: Giraffes communicate using infrasound—sounds below the range of human hearing. They can "talk" over long distances without making a peep!
Ready to embark on a giraffe-spotting adventure? Book your self-drive tour with Explore Africa Travel and witness these amazing creatures in their natural habitat. 📸✨

Desert-adapted elephants 🐘🌞

Desert-adapted elephants are the same species as African savanna elephants, but they show amazing adaptations to living in extreme temperatures and harsh conditions. Desert elephants in Namibia can primarily be found in the northwest part of the country, particularly in the Kunene Region. Sometimes you might encounter these remarkable creatures in the Hoanib River Valley and the surroundings of the Skeleton Coast.

Their skin colour is generally a light grey to sandy brown, which can help them blend into the arid, dusty environment of the Namib Desert. The dust and sand in their habitat can give their skin a more ashy or dusty appearance. They have relatively broader feet, longer legs and smaller bodies than other African bush elephants. The greater surface area stops the elephant from sinking into the landscape’s iconic burnt orange sandy plains, crossing over dunes in search of food and water. Desert Elephants feed on a wide range of plants, and like elephants elsewhere they take leaves, shoots, bark, flowers, fruit, bulbs, tubers and roots as well as grass and sedges.

Windhoek Aloe: A Symbol of Namibian Heritage

We have our own Windhoek Aloe, also commonly known as the Namibian Aloe. The reason it’s called the Windhoek Aloe is because it is mostly found in and around Windhoek. Our municipality even features it in their logo.
Its real name is Aloe littoralis, and it is native to Namibia, Angola, and parts of South Africa. This plant has vibrant red or pink flowers that bloom in wintertime, which is now, attracting sunbirds that feed on the nectar and help in pollination. It has medicinal benefits and was traditionally used to treat wounds, burns, and skin irritations.
If you’d like to see this fantastic fat plant, you can visit our Botanical

It has a history and displays an important role of the Owambo community.
Baobab Trees are slow growers, but they can reach up to 30m in height and can grow up to 50m in diameter – that’s one fat giant tree. They can live up to 5000 years. Long live the gigantic tree of life.

Many years ago, in 1920, a huge object was found by chance when a farmer was ploughing one of his fields with an Ox. He heard a metallic scratching sound and immediately investigated what it could be. The obstruction was excavated and identified as a meteorite.

Today, known as the Hoba Meteorite, located not far from Grootfontein, weighing about 60 tonnes, is the largest known intact meteorite (bits and pieces of it are displayed at the Wernhill shopping mall).

The name “Hoba” comes from a Khoekhoegowab (Nama / Damara Language) word meaning “gift”.

It sure is one iron gift on Earth’s surface.

Check it out, if you go up North-East of Namibia.

Did you know that Namibia has a Forest?
No, not the typical rainforest! We are too dry to have that…
We have a Quiver Tree Forest in Southern Namibia. It’s about 14km North-East of a little town named Keetmanshoop, on the road to Koёs.
The Quiver Tree Forest compromises of about 250 specimens of Aloidendron dichotomum. Our San people (Bushmen) traditionally used it’s branches to make quivers (A quiver is a container for holding arrows or bolts).
In 1995 the forest was declared a national monument of Namibia.
Near the forest, there is another attraction… the Giant’s Playground. A unique and phenomenal geology formation of vast pile of large dolerite rocks. As if a giant child was using the rocks as building blocks.

How convenient to have 2 special attractions in one place.🌞

PENDUKA

We have a little “village” in the heart of Katutura at the Goreangab Dam, named Penduka Village.

The name ‘Penduka’ originates from both the Otjiherero and Oshiwambo language, meaning WAKE UP!

Penduka was established to empower women, especially our disadvantaged Namibian women. They strive to uplift women (regardless of their social background, tribal heritage, or physical disabilities) strengthening their self-confidence and encouraging them to make the best out of their skills for a better future.

They have visually impaired women who make glass beads from scratch. They collect old glass bottles, crush them into fine pieces and then create moulds to melt the glass in an oven. After that they create beautiful jewellery and sell it in their shop. Recycling at it’s best!

They also create textiles using different techniques like Batik or hand embroidery. After creating the textiles they will take their raw materials to their sewing centre and make beautiful products such as table cloths, backpacks, pillow covers and much more.

For creating a better future for Namibian woman, this surely is a fantastic initiative. If you would like to support this initiative visit their website at www.penduka.com

Do you have a desire for your five minutes of fame?

Then here are a few ways visitors to Namibia have made it to the front pages of local newspapers, and not in a positive way.

· Spray painting National Monuments

· Climbing the protected dead trees at Dead Vlei

· Doing a n**e photoshoot on the Sossusvlei dunes

· “Rally driving” with rental cars for Instagram fame

· Getting out of the car and approaching wild lions for close up photos

Let’s remember to be respectful towards the people, property, culture, and national heritage of the places we visit as tourists and avoid making news headlines it the wrong light.

Education Foundation❤️

Did you know that we support an Orphanage with the help of our clients?

Prayer House of God is an Orphanage in Windhoek in the suburb Havana in Namibia.

They currently have around 15+ children in their care and are fully dependant on donations.

Explore Africa Travel has an Education Foundation Trust which facilitates donations and raises funds by the sales of locally made crafts and souveniers. All proceeds of the trust go towards the orphanage and to other projects supporting education in Namibia.. The orphanage was recently blessed with a donation of 405 Euros from the fundraising efforts of Jorge Guillen (a school in Spain) and we are utmost grateful! THANK YOU!!!

Get in touch to find out how you can contribute to the education in Namibia.

5 Things to do in Swakopmund on a Budget

We often get asked, “what can we do in Swakopmund on a Budget?”

Well, there are many activities one can do, but if you have a tight budget, we have some fun recommendations for you.

· Swakopmund Jetty – Walk along the Swakopmund Jetty over the ocean. Inhale the fresh sea breeze and should you choose to walk along the Jetty during high tide, be prepared to taste some Atlantic Sea water and become a bit wet.

· National Marine Aquarium – it’s interesting to see how the undersea world here differs from other parts of the world. Since we do get different fish species in the cold Atlantic Ocean versus the warm pacific oceans.

· Snake Park – Here you get to see some snakes and other reptiles indigenous to our country... plenty information.

· The Mole – Spend a day at the beach and enjoy the refreshing water of the Atlantic. The numerous restaurants and cafes will offer refreshments to your day

· Dune 7 – Want to climb one of the highest Dunes in Namibia? Dune 7 will give you a workout for sure.

We do hope this will give you insight to our B-E-A-U-tiful and fascinating west coast.
