The Hoba meteorite.
Now after the meteor news from Russia of the meteorite that exploded near the city of Chelyabinsk on February 15, the interest in known meteorites in Namibia has increased.
The Russian meteorite is estimated to have been up to 10.000 Tons and 17 metres in diameter when it did enter the earth atmosphere, at a speed of 64.000 Km/h. The meteorite came as a fireball and exploded into thousands of pieces before it hit the ground. A lot of small pieces have been found since. The biggest one according to news, 1.8 Kg.
The largest meteor found on earth so far, is the Hoba meteorite in Namibia, close to Tsumeb. It was found by a farmer in the early 1900's and due to size and weight it has never been moved. This gigantic iron mass is estimated 66 Tons.
Other famous meteorites in Namibia are The Gibeon Meteorite shower, that landed close to Gibeon in Southern Namibia and were found in 1838. Over 37 big stones were found, spread over 2500 Km2 area. Most of them were later moved to Windhoek and around 30 of them are on display, down town Windhoek. They do weight from 195 Kg's to 600 Kg each. They are 87% iron and 8% Nickel and due to the Nickel, they don't rust.
They are thought to be a part of a Super Nova that exploded about four billion years ago. Collision with earth is estimated 200 to 220 million years ago.
Both those Namibian meteorites are well worth the visit. Hoba the largest one near the town of Tsumeb and the Gibeon meteorite shower ones, in Windhoek the Capital City.
