10 interesting facts about Swakopmund's dunes....

They attract photographers for their ever-shifting displays of light and colours and often even an added shimmer due to minerals. Adventure-seekers adore the high dunes that provide the required rush. Geologists admire them all.

1. Unlike solid mountains, it can be very difficult to determine the age or origin of a sand dune. The 55 million years old Namib Desert is the oldest desert in the world.

2. The main thing that determines how tall a sand dune will get is how much sand there is. Dune 7 with the height of 383 meters is the highest sand dunes in the world.

3. Sand dunes get their shape from the wind. Because the strength of the wind and the direction of the wind changes, sand dunes look different. There are five main dune shapes: crescentic, linear, dome, parabolic, and star. Combinations of the above can also be found, for example small barchans on large barchans. These are called compound dunes. Complex dunes are ones where different dune forms are mixed, such as star dunes superimposed on a linear dune.

4. In the main Namib Sand Sea the dune colour varies from pale yellowish near the coast to reddish pink in the far interior. Several theories have been put forward to explain this variation. The main cause is probably that the weathering of iron-bearing material such as rock fragments causes iron-oxide coatings – rust in other words – to form on the surface of grains.

5. Black layers of magnetite occur in the dunes. It's magnetic so you can get it to stick to a magnet you pass over the sand; it's surprisingly soft and furry to touch.

6. Sand dunes can be very dynamic structures, moving place and continuously changing. Swakopmund's dunes can move up to 2m a year.

7. Sand dunes singing, booming, and even ‘burping’.

8. The cool air does regularly form a stable layer of fog, which is blown inland as far as 50 km. The coastal area has a mean annual rainfall of 2 to 20 mm and has thick fog on more than 180 days of the year. Thick fogs are the life-blood of the desert, providing enough moisture for a number of interesting, highly-adapted animal species to survive.

9. Despite the initial appearance of inhospitality in these environments, they host a wide variety of animal and plant species. Dunes are home for a lot of lives such as lizards, peringuey adder, sidewinder, birds (trac trac, gray lark), golden mole, Namaqua dune molerat, Namib long-eared bat, geckos, chameleons, scorpions, high species richness of beetles.

10. The high-intensity east winds in winter regularly blow dust out to sea for many hundreds of kilometres. African dust has been recorded as far away as in the Caribbean region on the other side of the Atlantic ocean.
