We're thrilled to announce the birth of a strong baby elephant calf! 🥳

Named Eve by Andreas, she’s the first calf of 11-year-old Lisa, the daughter of the matriarch Kinky.

Like all the females in the herd, Eve has the famous kink in her tail. 😉

She’s a perfect little miracle, especially considering that two baby elephants sadly didn't survive this year in the Ugab and Huab areas due to the harsh conditions that make it difficult for elephants to reproduce in the desert.

Eve is the second calf to survive this year, and we couldn't be more excited and grateful for her presence!

Join us in welcoming Eve to the EHRA family and celebrating this wonderful new addition to our conservation efforts. 🐘❤️

Mat-Travel is strongly against this project which has done well to operate very quietly until only 6 days left to raise objections.

Unfortunately, this is not an April fools joke, and this company believes that a train on tracks 5 meters above the ground will improve the area of Sossusvlei and Deadvlei.

We will be working hard over the next few days to raise our objections to the project to save the natural beauty of the area for ourselves, and future guests.

We urge you to raise your objections as well and let it be known that Sossuvlei should not be spoiled with this monstrosity.

Train and permanent balloon at Sossusvlei - EIA (no, it's not an April fools joke)

NAMIBIA UNTAMED AND UNTAINTED

Guided Photographic Tour

9th-17th March 2022 | R44 900

Namibia is a bucket-list destination for all keen landscape and wildlife photographers for its epic and untamed scenery.

Tourists flock to this desolate nation to witness its wild enchantment and explore its barren beauty.

After an incredible season last year, Venture with Kyle & Jon hosted by Mat-Travel Tours and Safaris will be returning to Namibia to lead this photographic expedition into this epic land.

Big rains are predicted over the country in the coming month, which is expected to transform this already magnificent country into a landscape photography wonderland. This, coupled with the low number of tourists in the country due to it being low season, means that locations and compositions will not be sprawling with other people. Allowing for unique and unspoiled photographs. Quite possibly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

Accommodation rates have also remained relatively low due to fewer tourists. This has allowed us to offer this tour at a very competitive price.

Highlights of the trip include: Sossusvlei, Deadvlei, Sesriem, Walvis Bay, Sandwich Harbour, Spitzkoppe.

This tour includes luxury lodges, with meals, chosen for the best locations for photography, as well as 4x4 vehicles and highly qualified guides and drivers.

Contact Venture with Kyle & Jon directly for more information.

Here are some images to inspire you from our tour last year.

Very exciting development for Dune Star Camp

New to this unrivalled experience is the sumptuous breakfast that is now being served at Namib Dune Star Camp itself and not at Namib Desert Lodge anymore. After repeated requests from our guests for an extended “one night stand”, a breakfast buffet is being offered from 6h30 am, as of 1 November 2021. The shuttle to Namib Desert Lodge only departs at 9h00 am.

AN “OLD TIMER” VISITOR: A nearly 24 years old Sandwich Tern!

While monitoring the shores of our coastline we pay attention to migratory shorebirds and seabirds dependant of our waters and environment. Sandwich terns from northern Europe are frequent visitors to our shores. Recent initiatives in Europe have made those observations easier with the use of engraved colour rings that can be spotted at a distance. However older birds only fitted with short metal rings are far more challenging to identify as the markings are much smaller and spread around the entire ring.

This particular bird was spotted on 10 February 2021 at Guano bay (a temporary roost), and with a bit of patience (25 min and more than 100 telephoto shots) we managed to decipher the whole ring:

VOGELTREKSTATION
ARNHEM – HOLLAND
1367783

The information was soon transmitted to our Netherlands colleagues, the record submitted through SAFRING (the regional coordinator) to the Dutch counterpart: And today I got the notification that this particular bird was ringed as a chick on a breeding colony on a small island in the Waddenzee (Friesland) on 30 May 1997! So it was sighted at Guano Bay 23 years 8 months and 11 days after ringing!

Since the shortest sea route between the two localities is 10 760 km (one way) and that the birds undertake this migration annually (and return) it means that this particular bird trekked along this route more than half a million kilometers in its lifetime so far! (excluding its normal daily flights for feeding at sea).

I think this definitely puts this bird in the “frequent flyer” category, and should entitled it to claim loads of “voyager miles benefits”.
