The famous Victoria Water Falls are one of Africa's most impressive natural wonders and are situated in the mighty Zambezi River between Zimbabwe and Zambia. After the river flows already for thousands of kilometres, it tumbles down at a 1 700 m wide and over a 112 m high gorge with a huge cloud of spray and keeps on flowing further with a loud roar. The water is lowest between August and December and this is the best time for viewing, as there is not too much mist to obscure the view. In the local languages these falls are called "the smoke that thunders". The falls were discovered in the previous century for the Western world by David Livingstone and were called in honour of the then British queen Victoria Falls.

The steep walls are a nesting place for many birds and the water in the canyon attracts animals of the desert. The name has its origin in the time, when ox-wagons were common. Six ox ropes must have been tied together in order to reach the water in the gorge with a bucket. It is an ideal place for hikes.

Rising from the great heights of the Drakensberg in Lesotho, flowing through the Orange Free State in South Africa, tumbling down the Augrabies Falls in the Cape, and forming the southern border of Namibia with South Africa, the Orange River (Garip) is one of the longest rivers in southern Africa. With some dams in it, this river mainly serves as a water supply in the semi-arid areas it flows through, e.g. the vineyards in northern Cape and in southern Namibia. This is a fairly "tame" river without dangerous animals and offers ideal opportunities for river rafting and canoeing in scenic landscapes. The Orange River reaches the Atlantic Ocean at Oranjemund and is the main source for the diamonds found along Namibia's southern Namib coast. The river was named after the royal Dutch family of Orange. Its indigenous name is Garip, meaning the great river.

The Nxai Pans in the Nxai Pan National Park lies east of Maun in the northern Kalahari of Botswana and this area is known for its many fossil pans which are covered with short nutritive grasses. The two largest pans are the Nxai pan and the Kudiakam pan. In the pans one finds islands of acacia trees which give shade for the game and paint picturesque sceneries in the flat landscape. In the southern part of the park are the seven baobab trees, called “Baines' Baobabs”, because they were named after Thomas Baines, one of the first adventurers in southern Africa and a painter, who painted these baobabs in 1862. During the 1970ties this area was declared a nature reserve and in 1992 the enlarged sanctuary was proclaimed a national park with a size of 2 578 square kilometres. The Nxai pans offer the visitor during the dry season between May and October game viewing at the artificial water holes and the behaviour of the animals can be observed well, especially between predators and their prey. During the rainy season the park changes into a green and blooming landscape with huge herds of springbuck. The park protects impala, springbuck, red hartebeest, gemsbuck, bat-eared fox, cheetah, brown hyena, giraffe and elephant. In the eastern side of the park, an old route can be found, on which cattle were moved and traded from 1950 till 1963 from Ngamiland over Mpandamatenga to Kazungula to be sold in Zambia.

The Okavango River (in Namibia called the Kavango River), with an approximate length of 1 450 km is known to be one of the longest rivers in southern Africa. Rising in the highlands of Angola, it looses about 600 m in altitude during its 600 km journey through Angola, where it is known as the Cubango. At Katwitwi the river swings to the east and runs for about 350 km along Namibia's northern border, where it is known as the Okavango / Kavango. Joined by the Cuito at Katere, the volume of the river increases immensely and after a south-eastward swing, it forms the border between the Kavango East Region and the Bwabwata National Park (Caprivi and Mahango Game Parks) in the formerly western Caprivi, now Kavango East Region also. At the Popa Rapids the panhandle is forms toward the vast Okavango Delta in Botswana, an 1 800 km² inland swamp area. Here and along its course, it boasts game parks and safari lodges on its banks.

The Namib-Naukluft National Park is with its size of 49 836 km² the biggest nature conservation area of Namibia and the fourth largest national park in the world. Places of interest are the Naukluft Mountains, the Namib Desert, Sossusvlei, Tsondabvlei, the Namib park and Sandwich Harbour. On the southern border of the park next to the restricted diamond area (Sperrgebiet) one finds wild horses, which date from the German colonial troops. They get their water from a spring at Garub. The legendary Schloss (castle) Duwisib lies just next to this park. The Kuiseb river divides the southern Namib with its huge sand dunes with the northern rocky Namib. On the banks of the Kuiseb lies the scientific research station Gobabeb. In the beautiful landscape around the water holes Homeb, Ganab and Hotsas one can view game. The rocky Blutkuppe invites for camping and magic sunsets. Just outside Swakopmund lies the Welwitschia plain and the Moon Landscape.

The Ndhovu Safari Lodge is situated about 20 km south of the Bagani bridge on the western bank of the Okavango River on road C48 close to the Popa Rapids in the Kavango East Region. From here one can reach the Bwabwata National Park (Mahango Game Park) (only 2 km away) without any difficulty, where visitors may view elephant, buffalo, lechwe and sable antelope, to name but a few. Ndhovu means elephant in the local language Thimbukushu. In true safari tradition, the lodge offers luxury tented accommodation, each tent being equipped with en-suite shower and toilet. The charming thatched communal lapa and each tent overlook the banks of the river where elephant and hippo may congregate, giving guests unforgettable game and bird-viewing opportunities whilst they enjoy sundowners at the bar and delicious buffet meals. Ndhovu is located opposite the Bwabwata National Park (Caprivi Game Park) and an ideal stop-over on your way to the Caprivi Strip (Zambesi Region), the famous Victoria Falls, the Chobe National Park and last but not least the Okavango Swamps.

No other area caused more excitement among early European discoverers and hunters than Lake Ngami. This shallow lake is located on the south-western edge of the Okavango Swamps in Botswana, about seventy kilometres from Maun. Only during good rainy seasons, this unspectacular lake is filled with water when the floods of the Okavango Delta through the rivers Thaoga, Nhabe and Kunyere can drain into this lake.

05/06/2023

The Mudumu National Park lies next to the Kwando River, which feeds the Linyanti swamps in eastern Caprivi, now Zambesi Region. The vegetation consists mainly of mopane and termitaria woodland with small areas of wetland on the western fringe. Next to kudu, roan antelope, warthog, elephant and hippopotamus, sitatunga and lechwe also occur here, while one can also sometimes see Cape hunting dog and buffalo. The bird life is very rich - one finds here 430 of Namibia's recorded 620 bird species. There exists a very interesting fact about the Kwando (Mashi), Chobe and Linyanti Rivers; they are actually one and the same river with three different names and is in fact just an arm of the mighty Zambesi River, because in the dry season this river flows upstream.
