On this yearโ€™s International Womenโ€™s Day we celebrate women & their families all over the world. Weโ€™re very proud that 66% of our entire team are women, and 75% of our management crew.

Weโ€™re also standing in solidarity with all the people of Ukraine. Itโ€™s easy to feel overwhelmed at the scale of this atrocity & the chaos which is unfolding, but even small individual donations or acts can change lives & keep up international pressure on Putin. After much research weโ€™ve donated to http://www.dec.org.uk/home, Disasters Emergency Committee, one of the amazing organisations working in Ukraine ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ ๐ŸŒป

Christmas is in a few days, and we couldn't be more excited ! ๐ŸŽ„

This year has been a real test on the resilience of the tourism industry, so for our final blog post of 2021, we crafted a wholesome, relatable and heart-warming story to remind all of us why we travel and why we are in the business of travel.

We hope that you will enjoy this, and have yourself a splendid Christmas !

I wish I wasโ€ฆ
a) driving down the M25 in the freezing cold, wondering when the next lockdown is coming
b) climbing ancient sand dunes under vast blue Namibian skies, and looking forward to a sumptuous bush breakfast
France & Germany may not want you right now, but our borders are open, flights are operating, & we canโ€™t think of anything weโ€™d rather have for Christmas than some lovely travellers to share our empty country with!

In today's instalment of our series, we asked Megan, our Accounts Guru, what her favourite destination in Namibia is. Here's what she had to say :

"Without a doubt, this has to be Etosha.

Growing up in the city, I never quite realized what was right under my nose.

There is an indescribable sense of freedom that only the wide open spaces of this National Park can provide. Getting lost between the salt pans, never quite knowing which animal you will come across next. Having breakfast on a game drive vehicle, while watching a pride of lions. Or sipping on a G & T, during the late afternoon, while watching the elephant splash around in a waterhole.

My favourite travel memory has to be when my husband and I went on a trip up to Etosha, we had such a difficult start to our trip, experiencing car trouble on our way there, setting back our entire itinerary. I remember arriving to our lodge late and missing all of the activities we had scheduled for that day. We made it just in time for dinner. The next morning we were off to another lodge and I was determined not to miss anything else! I was so intent on not missing our afternoon game drive that I was rushing and not taking anything in. We drove through the park to go from one lodge to the other. And then there, right in the middle of the road, was the most beautiful elephant that I have ever seen. We had to stop the car immediately and just sit there and gaze at this marvellous animal, as it took its time crossing our path.

This, I tell myself, this must be what life is about. Moments that I can't put into words, but that will forever cemented into my memory. Moments that provide perspective about just how magical the world around me is."

Undoubtedly Etendeka Mountain Camp. Dennis and Bonnie have been up in the Etendeka Mountain ranges for more than 20 years, working with local communities, establishing the lodge initially, and then extending the product to include the walking trails as well. This, to my mind, is possibly one of the last true wilderness areas left anywhere on Earth.

The team at Etendeka are so incredibly aware of the impact that they have on the local environment, and ensure that everything they do is done with the utmost respect. You sleep in a tent โ€“ an incredibly comfy meru-styled tent, with amazing beds.
The bathrooms are adjacent to the tents, and you still have a bucket shower and a flushable long drop loo โ€“ but there is PLENTY of piping hot water (I learned I can shower and wash my hair in a ยพ bucket โ€“ yay me!), the food is home-styled cooking and really tasty.
I always leave Etendeka with a true feeling of wonderment and awe.

From your arrival at Palmwag, every transfer, hike or even just walking to your room is an adventure.
I saw my first wild terrapin at Etendeka, I have sat on top of crystal mountain (where incredible quartz formations and geodes sit lodged in the rocky outcrops) and watched a herd of desert elephant making their way up the valley and I have walked to my room, listening to the sounds of zebra snorting because they have come into camp for warmth.

It is a breath-taking experience, that slows you down, allows you to recharge and appreciate the natural world, and leaves you wondering โ€“ How on EARTH did Dennis manage to identify a Herero Chat in midflight!

Aardvark might be the first word in the English dictionary, but there is a lot more to these illusive creatures!
Did you know that aardvarks are digitigrades, which means that they walk on their toes โ€“ standing on its flat feet is the aardvark version of a squat!
They are closely related to elephant shrews and golden moles and have a diet made up exclusively of ants and termites, but can also eat โ€˜aardvark cucumbersโ€™ โ€“ this is the ONLY fruit that the aardvark can eat.
And finally โ€“ the aardvark is so unique that it has an entire scientific order all to itself. It is the sole member of the order Tubulidentata (referring to mammals with tubule-style teeth) and the genus Orycteropus (referring to its burrowing feet).

Panthera Pardus , or the African Leopard, is one of the harder-to-spot big cats in the region. This (mainly) solitary animal spends its days being an apex predator, an excellent swimmer, and a fearless hunter. Lodge Manager Francois du Plessis, from N/a'an ku se Kanaan Lodge , took these amazing photos of the remarkable feline a few days ago. All these images are of wild leopards.
