FYI: Fun facts about Namibia
1. Namibia is home to the world's oldest desert.
This is made up of shifting sand dunes, gravel plains and rugged mountains. The Namib desert is the oldest desert, it has been around for at least 55million years.

2. Namibia has 30 languages that are spoken in the country.
More than 11 languages are native to Namibia but with its cosmopolitan culture, languages from all across the world are spoken in Namibia.

3. Namibia has some of the highest sand dunes.
The tallest being in the Sossusvlei region, called Big Daddy. However, Dune 7 is the highest sand dune. It is 388m long.

Namibia's Bogenfels is a place known for its unique rock formations in the coastal Namib Desert (hence the name, which means "arch rock" in German). Near the coast, a 55-meter (180-foot) high rock arch is the primary formation.Tourists were not allowed to visit the area for many years, due to the wealth of diamonds found in the surroundings. For the past five years or so controlled tourism has been practised here, and this part of the Namib Desert – known as the Sperrgebiet – is alive with colour, texture and intrigue.

What is found in Twyfelfontein?

The largest collection of rock art engravings in southern Africa may be seen in Twyfelfontein, which has been called a "open-air gallery." At Twyfelfontein, there are a few rock paintings and more than 2000 rock engravings. Along with ostrich, impala, elephant, and zebra, there are also over 200 giraffe and 100 rhinos on display.

Hiddenvlei is a 2km hike from the end of the 24 track, with wooden poles marking the way. This vlei is the least visited of all the vleis, allowing visitors to enjoy some peace and quiet in the lovely desert settings.

Look closely at the sand on your stroll to Hiddenvlei to examine the numerous tracks of the creatures that inhabit the area. You should be able to tell the difference between Gemsbok and Springbok tracks rather readily. However, if you look closely, you can find the traces of smaller animals that dwell beneath the sand, such as the Namib Gecko.

If you're looking for weltwitchia, continue east on the Weltwitchia Drive to the Moon Landscape, a view of the Swakop River's eroded hills and valleys. You might want to take a brief 12km return side-trip north to Goanikontes, a farm and oasis founded in 1848. It's located by the Swakop River, surrounded by magnificent desert mountains, and makes for a great picnic spot.

Following the fall of Mukorob in 1988, Vingerklip, located 80 kilometers southwest of Outjo and 45 kilometers west of Khorixas, has become Namibia's most well-known erosional rock structure. It ranks high among the country's geological attractions and the tip of this amazing rock formation is 929m above sea level.

Kolmanskop is a ghost town in the Namib in southern Namibia, ten kilometres inland from the port town of Lüderitz. It was named after a transport driver named Johnny Coleman who, during a sand storm, abandoned his ox wagon on a small incline opposite the settlement. 14 April 1908, Zacharias Lewala, a railway worker in Namibia, found a diamond in the desert. Years later, this moment would mark the birth of the ghost town called Kolmanskop in Namibia. Excitement was an under statement.

The south of the desert is extremely dry and even lacks dry riverbeds; gemsbok is the only large mammal to occur in this harsh environment.

The Fish River Canyon, is located in the south of Namibia. It is the second largest canyon world wide after the grand canyon in the USA. The Fish River canyon is the second most visited tourist attraction in Namibia. The Canyon forms part of the state-run Ais-Ais Richtersveld Transfontier Park. Entrance to the Park is situated 10 kilometres from the well-known view point Hell`s Bend at the Hobas Restcamp. The Canyon features a gigantic ravine, in total about 160 kilometres long, up to 27 km wide and in places almost 550 meters deep.
