This is the Garub station that fell into disrepair along the B4, a short drive from Aus. It is worth a stop, especially for keen photographers.

Such remnants of the past are dotted throughout Namibia.

To celebrate Earth Day, and in line with this year’s theme of , we’re happy to share our newest TreadRight project, ’s Wild Pine project.

The organization’s mission is to rewild the Scottish Highlands, and the rewilding project is restoring Scotland’s globally important Caledonian Forest and its unique wildlife. Thousands of years ago, wild pinewoods covered an estimated one million hectares of Scotland, but today only about 2% of this life-supporting habitat remains, broken into small and isolated fragments, many under threat and poor condition.

This is the first project our TreadRight Foundation has announced in support of its shift to supporting nature-based solutions, in support of Cullinan Namibia’s journey to net zero. Learn more about Trees for Life at https://www.treadright.org/projects/trees-for-life/

Proceed with caution!

During Namibia's rainy season, a flash flood can turn a bone dry river bed into a torrent in a wink.

This year, Cullinan Namibia Tours & Safaris and The Travel Corporation family of brands announced our commitment to net zero. Now, we’re sharing TTC’s science-based targets, which have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The most effective means to address climate change is to get our emissions down to zero, which is our primary focus. We’ve reset our Climate Action Plan to incorporate these targets, committing us to Measure, Reduce, Restore, and Evolve, and we’ve established a Carbon Fund that will be dedicated solely to initiatives that contribute to our net zero journey. Progress made by this fund will be reported on in future Impact Reports. And, to further support this journey, our TreadRight Foundation will prioritize and invest in nature- based solutions developed to restore our planet by addressing climate change as well as the rapid loss of biodiversity.

Seeking out shops, restaurants and experiences owned by or employing underrepresented communities will not only support diversity, inclusion and equity in the destination you’re visiting, but will give you the opportunity to connect with and hear from locals with deep roots in the community’s history.

Never make assumptions about someone simply based on your perceptions and first impressions, and challenge any stereotypes you may have been exposed to. Diversity is the foundation of meaningful travel, and we explore to meet different people, hear different perspectives, and experience unique cultures.

To ensure all animal encounters on your travels are ethical, get to know the standards of animal welfare, which are based on the Five Domains Model.

Our Animal Welfare Policy can help you with just that. Learn things like why it’s best to view wild animals in their natural habitat, (you won’t disrupt their natural behaviors with your presence,) and why it’s a major no-no to ride any wild animal that ought not be ridden, (any instance where wild animals such as elephants, ostriches, dolphins or big cats are held captive for these purposes entails abuse and suffering).

There are many perks to visiting popular destinations in shoulder seasons. In most cases, flights, hotels and attractions are much cheaper, and crowds are smaller. You’re also helping reduce overtourism, which means less strain on the infrastructure and communities that can get overwhelmed by an oversaturation of visitors.

Getting to know the local customs and traditions before you go to a new place will allow you to immerse yourself in a respectful manner by dressing appropriately, knowing a bit of the local language, and adhering to cultural etiquette and expectations.

Eliminate single-use plastic toiletry bottles entirely by bringing your own in reusable bottles.

While we’re at it, we’re reminding you to never forget your reusable water bottle on your trip, to eliminate single-use plastic water bottles for good. Get one with a filter to ensure your drinking water is clean no matter where you go!

Farm-to-table meals are not only incredibly delightful and delectable experiences that become lasting memories, but they also go a long way towards supporting sustainable agricultural practices. By supporting local growers you’re supporting sustainable food production.

Keeping food waste at a minimum is important no matter where you are. Biting off only what you can chew, and avoiding buffets can help reduce or eliminate your food waste, and therefore your overall carbon footprint.

Check out our Impact Hub for more ways you can make a positive impact when it comes to your meals: impact.treadright.org/food

This World Tourism Day, we’re celebrating the recovery of travel as we focus on its bright future. We can all play a part in ensuring a vibrant and resilient industry – and planet – for generations to come. This week, we’re sharing the do’s and don’ts of responsible travel to inspire your upcoming adventures.
DO:
If you can, fly direct to your destination. Take-off and landing are the most fuel intensive portions of a flight. And, you can reduce your footprint further by opting to travel by coach, bike, or foot where possible.
DON’T:
Overpacking increases your carbon footprint. The heavier the airplane, the more greenhouse gases it emits. If every passenger on a plane packed one less pair of shoes (or the equivalent of 1 kg), the impact would result in the equivalent of taking 10,500 cars off the road for one year!

We’ve updated our MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Checklist to help you think of all the simple changes you can make to have a lasting positive impact. Download it at treadright.org/checklist .
