This is probably our most favourite town in Namibia. Swakopmund - the adventure capital of Namibia. With palm lined streets, lots of coffee shops and restaurants and a cool ocean breeze there is no town like Swakop!

A remarkable feat of engineering by the Sociable Weavers....some of these nests weigh over a ton.

In the arid landscapes of Namibia, Sociable Weavers create awe-inspiring communal nests. These architectural marvels, sometimes stretching several meters wide, can be found dangling from trees or perched atop structures. With the capacity to shelter hundreds of birds, it’s a sight to behold when one of these nests teems with life. Some weigh over a ton, bearing testimony to their extensive size and material usage.

The nest’s interior is an engineering feat, consisting of chambers and entrance tunnels. Tailored to house individual pairs or small family units, these chambers offer privacy and communal living benefits. The design accounts for extreme temperatures, keeping the chambers cool during hot days and warm during cold nights.

Beyond architectural genius, these nests offer multifaceted advantages. Birds in such communities experience heightened safety due to their numbers. The shared living arrangement fosters collaboration in tasks like maintenance, food collection, and guarding.

Interestingly, some of these nests have witnessed Sociable Weaver life for over a century, symbolizing nature’s resilience and the bird’s enduring legacy in Namibia’s wilds.
