Happy World Rhino Day!

Today, we celebrate the magnificent rhinoceros and their crucial role in our ecosystems. These gentle giants are a symbol of strength, resilience, and the importance of conservation efforts.
Rhinos face numerous challenges, including poaching and habitat loss, but there's hope in the dedicated individuals and organizations working tirelessly to protect them. Let's take a moment to appreciate the incredible work being done to ensure a brighter future for rhinos. Support conservation initiatives, spread awareness, and stand up against illegal wildlife trade.

Meet Porthos, the gentle giant who plays a vital role in the Ugab River elephant community. 🐘

In 2021, we collared Porthos to help keep him and his herd safe. He used to roam with two other bulls, known as the Three Musketeers, but they are sadly assumed to be dead.

Since 2018, Porthos has made the Ugab River his permanent home, filling a much-needed role as a bull.

With his beautiful up-curving tusks and small ears, Porthos is easily recognisable. He's also incredibly gentle and tolerant, though he'll give a clear warning if he feels disrespected. ☝🏼

He's taken on the critical task of teaching younger bulls their place in the hierarchy, a role he learned from an older Ugab bull years ago.

We are truly amazed at how Porthos guides and protects his herd. 💛

To adopt Porthos, please head over to the link in our bio, or pop an email to [email protected].

Happy Hyena Day!

Hyaena brunnea is the scientific name for the brown hyena. Hyaena derives from the ancient Greek word “hyaina,” which evolved from “hys,” meaning hog or pig. Under the Roman pen, hyaina became hyaena, and when Middle English emerged as the prominent language, hyaena morphed into hyena.
Hyenas are among the most intelligent animals on Earth.
Hyenas have a reputation for being scavengers, but they are actually very successful hunters. The scavenging behaviour of hyenas annually prevents five infections of anthrax in humans, and 140 infections in cattle, sheep and goats
Hyenas are primarily nocturnal.
Hyenas live in territorial social groups called clans.
The spotted hyena is the largest species of hyena.
Female hyenas possess similar looking reproductive organs to males therefore accurate sexing can be difficult.
The hyena is more closely related to the mongoose and cat than the dog.
There are four species in the hyena family—spotted, striped, and brown hyenas plus the aardwolf. The lesser-known aardwolf is smaller and mainly eats termites.

Attention all adventure seekers! If you’re planning a trip to Namibia, it’s essential to follow respectful traveling etiquette -

Namibia is home to incredible wildlife species with remarkable landscapes, so sometimes getting up close and personal with these creatures and their habitats can be tempting.

This is a big no-no, and we encourage those visiting our beautiful country to be responsible tourists ⬇️

🐆 Choose responsible tour operators with trained guides who prioritise animal welfare and conservation

🐘 Respect the animals by keeping a safe distance, avoiding loud noises and sudden movements, and never feeding or touching them

🌱 Follow the rules and regulations of the national parks and reserves in Namibia that protect the wildlife

🌿 Choose ethical accommodations that have sustainable and eco-friendly practices and respect the wildlife and its habitat

🧻 Be mindful of your impact by avoiding littering, using eco-friendly products, and limiting your water and energy usage

By following these tips, you can have a fantastic wildlife experience in Namibia while being a responsible tourist.

Elephants are gentle animals that readily show their emotions and like every animal, they have comfort zones with boundaries that vary between individuals. 🐘

Before elephants attack, they tend to give many warnings and if you can correctly analyse those warnings and understand their body language, you will be able to keep yourself
safe during encounters -

😊 The comfort zone:
- Elephants are relaxed, friendly and continue on with their activities.

🤔 The alert zone:
- Elephants are aware and turn their attention towards you.
- Head might be lifted, and swing their trunk and feet in your direction to pick up your scent and vibration.
- Make sure you remain quiet and wait for elephants to relax before moving on.

😤 The warning zone:
- Elephants feel uncomfortable with you and display signs of being annoyed and irritated.
- Signs include headshakes, kicking dust, forward and backward swinging of the trunk, standing tall, head held high, ears spread wide and mock charges.
- Stay still for a while, remain quiet and then slowly back away.

😡 The critical zone (flight or fight):
- Elephants will either charge you or look for an escape.
- Elephants will show many signs of uneasiness, and if you ignore it they might actually attach you or look for an escape route.

Understanding the 4 zones of personal space of elephants are CRUCIAL in preventing human-elephant conflict. 🙌🐘
