s particularly important in light of the city of Abuja’s official plan, which states that Abuja must become a more transit-oriented city in which people make more and better use of its transit system, as well as other sustainable modes of transportation such as walking and cycling. Over the past 8 months, we have embarked on a number of highly-visible initiatives to improve the quality and availability of Bus transit services in Abuja. The most noteworthy is the state of the art Bus system lines, which calls for implementation of new city busses, to bring accessible, comfortable, and environmentally-sustainable rapid transit services to all parts of the city in the form 200 kilometers of exclusive transit rights-of-way. While these initiatives will bring many benefits to all travelers in the city of Abuja and attract many new customers to Abuja Transit System, it is important to remember that 40-50% of Abuja residents use public transport (Taxi, local buses). In 2011, statistics show that over 5 million customer trips were made in city of Abuja alone, via road side buses and taxis. Bus services are the most “local” of all major and developing cities services, bringing transit access and mobility to the vast majority of neighborhoods in the city of Abuja. A very large percentage of Abuja residents will connect rapidly to the city bus transit as well as local travel within communities. Buses are very much the “grass roots” of the Metro Bus Services Limited. It is therefore, very important for us to improvise and create quality services. The purpose of this report is to describe the initiatives which the MBSL is taking or proposes to take in order to achieve that objective. The report is divided into two main sections.
