Bandits have invaded the Afaka barracks of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna, killing a naval officer.

The bandits were also said to have also kidnapped two majors.
The bandits who attacked the barracks around 1am on Tuesday are still be inside the academy.

A reliable source within the barracks said security has been beefed up within and around the barracks to stop the bandits from escaping with the officers.

“It was a terrible experience, the bandits took advantage of the time when most people had gone to bed to attack the barracks.”

“Right now, the whole barracks is under lock and key and security has been beefed up so that the bandits cannot leave the barracks because it is believed that they are still within,” the source said.

One of the officers who was injured in the attack is currently being treated at a hospital within the barracks.
The source said that there are, however, fears that the bandits may decide to kill the officers in a bid to escape.

The Academy Public Relations Officer, Major Bashir Jajira did not respond to calls put across to him.

The Nigeria men's basketball team made 20 3-pointers and stunned the United States 90-87 on Saturday in a pre-Olympic exhibition game in Las Vegas.

Nine years after losing to the U.S. by 83 points at the 2012 Olympics, Nigeria never trailed in the fourth quarter. Coached by Warriors associate head coach Mike Brown and featuring eight players with NBA experience, Nigeria made 20 of 42 3s, including six from Gabe Vincent (Miami Heat), who led the team with 21 points (6 of 8 on 3-pointers). Caleb Agada added 17 points, including 3 of 3 from 3-point range.

“It’s different when you’re playing for a country. Right now we’re representing the continent. It means the world to us and I hope we showed it here tonight.” Vincent said.

Team USA fell to 54-3 in exhibition games since 1992. In the last meeting between the teams, a 2016 exhibition, the U.S. won 110-66.

Kevin Durant (Brooklyn Nets) led the U.S. with 17 points on 4-of-13 shooting. Jayson Tatum (Boston Celtics) added 15 and Damian Lillard (Portland Trail Blazers) had 14. Nigeria outrebounded the U.S. 46-34.
“It’s just all the work we put in," Vincent said. "It’s no mistake what happened here tonight."

Team USA takes the court Monday against Australia. The U.S. plays its first Olympic game on Sunday, July 25 against France. They will compete in a total of three group play matches before the knockout stage begins on Aug. 2.

PUTTING THE LOSS IN PERSPECTIVE:

Joe Vardon, NBA senior writer: This is the worst lost in the history of American international basketball, dating to at least 1992 when NBA players were allowed to play in the Olympics. There is no other way to describe it. Yes, the loss doesn’t count toward Team USA’s medal hopes, but a group with Durant and Lillard just lost to a country with two Olympic basketball wins … in its history.

South Africa is considering allowing women to have multiple husbands, a move towards equality in a country that already allows men to take multiple wives.

The proposal comes in a green paper from South Africa's Department of Home Affairs and has sparked outrage from conservative voices in the Rainbow Nation.

Polygamy, the practice of men taking multiple wives, is legal and part of some indigenous traditions.

"South Africa inherited a marriage regime that was based on the Calvinist Christian and Western traditions," the paper states, saying that there is a need for an "overarching policy that is based on constitutional values and the understanding of modern society dynamics".

The paper notes that current marriage law is flawed and allows for the marriage of minors and does not allow people to change their s*x and remain married.

Human rights activists consulted in the process of writing the file "submitted that equality demands that polyandry be legally recognised as a form of marriage".

Officials say that one option could be a "gender-neutral" regime.

"South Africa could do away with categorising marriages along lines of race, s*xual orientation, religion and culture," they suggested.

"That means South Africa (could) adopt a dual system of either monogamous or polygamous marriages."

That would then allow for polyandry, or women taking multiple husbands, due to the "gender-neutral" requirement.

Conservatives have argued that polyandry and polygamy are entirely different.

"Let us defend our culture, tradition and customs by participating in this process. Let us object to Polyandry outright," said reality TV star Musa Mseleku.

Claiming to be "pro-equality", Mseleku questioned how paternity would be determined polyandrous marriages.
"That child is going to belong to which family?" he asked.

Reverend Kenneth Meshoe, the leader of the African Christian Democratic Party, argued that differences between the s*xes would spell disaster for such unions.

He said polygamy was "an accepted practice" while polyandry would fail because "men are jealous and possessive".

President Nana Addo Akufo-Addo of Ghana, on Tuesday, commissioned a Toyota vehicle assembly plant in the country, the first in West Africa.

The assembly plant by the Toyota Tsusho Manufacturing Company Limited is located in the Freezones Enclave in Tema. The plant is to assemble some models of Toyota and Suzuki vehicles in the country.

Interestingly, Nigeria was not selected despite its larger internal market and even after being Nigerian President Buhari assiduously lobbied in that regard. Mr Imai Toshimitsu, COO of Toyota, had earlier commented that Ghana was chosen due to its “favorable economic climate.”

President Akufo-Addo commissioning the plant said it will help make the acquisition of new vehicles by Ghanaians more affordable as well as enable public sector workers to be able to afford and purchase locally assembled vehicles.

“Government will continue to create the enabling environment to boost the profitability of the emerging automobile sector in Ghana,” he said.

According to the Ghanaian President- “The vision is to make Ghana a fully integrated and competitive industrial hub for the automotive industry in West Africa, and we are very much on course,”.

He said the Ministry of Trade and Industry is working with other state institutions such as the Ghana Integrated Aluminum Development Corporation (GIADEC) and the Ghana Integrated Iron and Steel Developing Corporation to develop locally, the required raw material value chains to free the manufacturing sector of the automobile industry.

Rwanda has acquired its first-ever gold refinery.

And officials say it has capacity to process gold from around the continent, boosting efforts to ensure that Africa adds value to its minerals before exporting them.

The $5m plant is located at the Kigali Special Economic Zone in Gasabo District.

Aldango, the company behind the initiative is a joint venture between two firms – Hilly Metals Company, a local company, and Aldabra.

The two hold equal shares in the business. The refinery has been operating since March. Aldango was previously running as a business dealing in gold.

Speaking to The New Times on Tuesday, Jean de Dieu Mutunzi, the company’s chairman said, “We have built an advanced factory with enough capacity to process large quantities of gold from all around Africa.”

“What we are doing is not new but people have been used to taking gold to Europe, Dubai, Turkey, Switzerland, and Belgium. Now we have the same factory with the standards as those in Europe and Asia,” he added.

For so long we had no factories that process what is being mined on the continent, he said.

The company’s core business is to buy gold and process it to make sure we get 99.99 per cent quality, he said.

The Nigerian Government has suspended, indefinitely, the operations of the microblogging and social networking service, Twitter, in Nigeria.

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, announced the suspension in a statement signed by his Special Assistant Segun Adeyemi citing the “persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence”.

President Muhammadu Buhari
The Minister said the Federal Government has also directed the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to immediately commence the process of licensing all OTT and social media operations in Nigeria.
The development comes after Twitter deleted President Muhammadu Buhari’s tweet where he threatened to treat Nigerians “misbehaving” in “the language they understand”.

“Many of those misbehaving today are too young to be aware of the destruction and loss of lives that occurred during the Nigerian Civil War. Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand.” - the president tweeted.

2 days ago the President's Twitter account was reported by Nigerians who understood the last part of the president's tweet thread as threats against the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its military wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
Many reminded Buhari of the consequences of the Nigerian Civil War which lasted from 1967 to 1970, stating that such must not be repeated.

Over 3 million Nigerians, mostly Igbo people, died during the war. Millions of people, especially children also starved to death.

Social media users likened President’s statement to that of the former United States President Donald Trump which earned the latter a permanent suspension.

27/04/2021

In Niger State,  the state Governor, Sani Bello, in an interview with journalists on Monday, said Boko Haram terrorists had taken over a part of the state, hoisting their flag in Kaure village from where they had made incursions into more than 50 villages.
He said Abuja was not safe with Boko Haram’s presence in Niger State.

The governor lamented that over 50 villages, which were overrun by the terrorists, had been deserted by original inhabitants.

He said, “I am confirming that there are Boko Haram elements around Kaure in the Shiroro Local Government of Niger State. They have taken over the territory. They have hoisted their flag. I am confirming to you now that they have taken over the wives of people by force.”

Bello, while describing the situation in the state as critical and pathetic, said over 3,000 villagers escaped to Minna on Sunday night alone, while several others were in camps in Gwada and other places.

“The majority of the displaced persons will have to remain in this camp in Minna because their villages have been taken over by Boko Haram terrorists and bandits. Their wives have been seized from them and forcefully attached to Boko Haram elements,” he said.

He warned that the Boko Haram terrorists were trying to make Kaure their home and headquarters like they did in Sambisa forest, adding that while Sambisa forest is several kilometres away from Abuja, Kaure is only two hours drive to Abuja.

He explained that his administration had been asking the Federal Government to come to the aid of the state in dealing with the insecurity, adding that such efforts had not yielded desired results thereby making it possible for the terrorists to occupy a part of the state.

Addressing the governor at the IDP camp, a youth leader, Bulus Esu, said the bandits two weeks ago demanded N5m ransom from the people of Kampana to prevent them from being kidnapped.

He added, “The people did this to avoid kidnap. However, when they came back, they asked the women to cook food for them after which they still r***d the women.”

13/04/2021

A Burkina Faso military tribunal charged ex-President Blaise Compaore and other officials with the murder of Thomas Sankara, the iconic West African leader killed in a 1987 coup.

Compaore, one of his top aides, Gilbert Diendere, and 12 others should face trial for the killing the former president known as “Africa’s Che Guevara,” the tribunal said Tuesday in a ruling in the capital, Ouagadougou.

Compaore has been living in exile in Ivory Coast since being removed from power in a popular revolt in 2014. His party finished second in elections in November and his supporters last month urged the government to allow him to return to the country.

Sankara was an army captain and anti-imperialist who seized power in a 1983 coup. He led the country for four years until his murder at the age of 37. Burkina Faso’s transitional government reopened the case of his murder, which remains unresolved after more than three decades.

Compaore, who fled the country after three decades in power, blocked all attempts to investigate the killing of his one-time comrade. Sankara is still admired in West Africa for his policies such as promoting women and improving health and education, and held up as an example of a leader by a generation of Burkinabe born after he died.

Critics say Sankara’s National Council of the Revolution also imprisoned union leaders without trial, sometimes abusing military rule.

A battle between Nigerian banks and MTN left millions of subscribers unable to recharge their phones using the USSD services on Friday. That was after banks shut off the telecoms firm over fees charged for the service.

MTN had reduced commission given to lenders from 3.5% to 2.5%. The decision was contested by the banks, but the telco refused to yield.

The disagreement led to MTN subscribers not being able to access USSD of Guaranty Trust Bank, Access Bank and other financial services. Apparently the banks cut off the service to protect their profits....in a move that has been described by telco executives as “tyrannical”.

MTN advised its subscribers to seek alternative means of recharging their phones without informing them what the problem was.

The faceoff between both sectors has now drawn the attention of the Federal Government.

Commenting on the issue, the Minister of Comnunications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, said he has spoken to the regulators of respective sectors, Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigerian Communications Commission.

Pantami said the disagreement will be rresolve in order for services to be restored:

"We have reached an advance stage of resolving the issues, for the services to be restored to our citizens. Many thanks." the minister said in a statement posted on his Twitter page.

Prince Harry has entered the workforce.

Now that he's no longer a working member of the British royal family, the Duke of Suss*x has taken a job as an executive at a Silicon Valley start-up company called BetterUp.

The company announced in a news release Tuesday that Harry, 36, has joined its executive team as chief impact officer. The start-up provides "mobile-based coaching, counseling, and mentorship for both personal and professional growth," according to the release.

Harry's position will entail working on promoting greater dialogue around mental health, a cause that he has frequently championed.

"As BetterUp’s first Chief Impact Officer, my goal is to lift up critical dialogues around mental health, build supportive and compassionate communities, and foster an environment for honest and vulnerable conversation," Harry said in a blog post on the company's website.

"And my hope is to help people develop their inner strength, resilience, and confidence."
He also explained why he took the position.

"I firmly believe that focusing on and prioritizing our mental fitness unlocks potential and opportunity that we never knew we had inside of us," he said. "As the Royal Marine Commandos say, ‘It’s a state of mind.’ We all have it in us.

"Being attuned with your mind, and having a support structure around you, are critical to finding your own version of peak performance."

He said he will be focused on the four areas of driving advocacy and awareness, guiding BetterUp's social mission and impact, influencing the vision of the company's platform, and expanding BetterUp's global community.

BetterUp has a network of more than 2,000 coaches, more than 270 employees and has worked with businesses and entities that include Hilton, Chevron, NASA and Warner Media.

18/03/2021

Tanzanian President John Pombe Magufuli has died at the age of 61, the government announced on Wednesday.

The 61-year-old leader nicknamed "the bulldozer" has died of heart failure, after weeks of speculation he was infected with COVID-19. Many will remember him for his controversial handling of the pandemic in Tanzania.

Announcing his death in a live television address, Vice President Samia Suluhu Hassan said Magufuli had died of a heart condition.

Speculation had been rife about his possible infection with the coronavirus. He had not been seen in public since the end of February.

"Our beloved president passed on at 6 p.m. this evening," said Suluhu. "All flags will be flown at half-mast for 14 days. It is sad news. The president has had this illness for the past 10 years.''

She added that the late president died at a hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania's largest city.

Since the pandemic was declared in March 2020, Magufuli had downplayed the severity of the virus.
At one point, he made fun of the country's coronavirus testing facilities, saying he had secretly sent samples of papaya and goat and that they came out positive.

Though he never provided proof of that claim, he warned that those results could mean that people were getting false positive results.
Shortly afterward, Tanzania stopped sharing updates on the number of people infected and killed due to COVID-19.

The country's last coronavirus figures were given in May last year. At that time, 509 people were confirmed to have contracted the virus and 29 had died.

No lockdown:

As neighboring countries Kenya and Uganda were implementing lockdowns and curfews to curb the spread of COVID-19, President Magufuli shocked many by declaring that that Tanzania would remain open for business.
"We Tanzanians have not locked ourselves down, and I don't expect to announce even a single day that we are implementing a lockdown because our God is still alive, and he will continue protecting us Tanzanians," the late president once told a crowd.
"But we shall also continue taking precautions, including steaming. You steam, at the same time pray to God,

15/03/2021

The United States has alleged that the business strategies of the Dangote Group are dangerous to the Nigerian economy.

Aliko Dangote, famed as the Africa’s richest man, is the owner of the Dangote Group of Companies, which have been described as the largest conglomerate in West Africa boasting of over 30,000 employees.

“Although an undiluted success in terms of wealth accumulation, Dangote personifies the duality in Nigeria’s economy,” the American government said while maintaining that the duality “presents a dilemma for country’s economic policy.”

It accused Dangote Group of blocking investment that the company may see as major competitors, noting that “Weighing everything in the balance, we believe the Dangote model is harmful to Nigerian and American interests in the long run.”

A report published in 2010 on Wikileak’s website had said even though Dangote played a major role in Nigeria’s economy, “many products on the country’s import ban list are items in which it has major interests.”

The American government further warned, “Unfortunately, the Dangote model will likely be the one most emulated until its beggar-thy-countrymen contradictions become more apparent.”

The company faced backlashes after it called for a total ban on tomato importation in 2019 when it started its tomato processing subsidiary.

Barely two weeks ago, the conglomerate proposed a provision in the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) seeking to ban the importation of oil by companies without refining licences, which according to the company, will help spur investments in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.

Dangote also recommended that the volume of fuel imported should be distributed according to what each refinery produces.

The recommendation came at the time Dangote Group was on the verge of completing a 650,000 barrels-per-day refinery in Lagos.

Businessman and founder of Stanbic IBTC, Atedo Peterside, faulted the unfair advantages.

He tweeted “This is why some of us argue that the Nigerian economy is rigged in favour of a handful of well-connected persons.”
