King Mewu Akran of Badagry was one of the facilitators of transatlantic slave trade. He eventually signed the abolition treaty in 1852. King Mewu Akran in this painting is seen with Badagry chiefs representing all the quarters as well as with Portuguese merchants paying a courtesy visit. The European merchants presented gifts of cannons, guns, and swords as medium of exchange for slaves.
