What do you know about Ibejulekki and Slavery❓

Lagos HInterland Slave Musuem

Over the course of three centuries, more than 500,000 Africans were sold into slavery through Badagry's coast.

From the 16th Century till its abolition in 1886, the coastal town of Badagry, now a part of Lagos State, was the final point of departure for indigenes who were sold into slavery.

Decades ago, millions from the hinterland were bundled into ships and delivered to traders in European and American markets.

Today, it has become a destination for tourists who want a slice of its well-preserved ties to the transatlantic slave trade.

The people of Ibeju Lekki pride themselves as being from “Igi-Meta” This can be gleened from their “Oriki” part of which reads thus:
‘……Omo onigi meta ijebu, ikan n so owo, ikan n so iyun, ikan n so alaari baba aso…..’

Ibeju Lekki indigenes are friendly and accommodating as can be seen in their peaceful co-existence with various other Yoruba and non-Yoruba speaking Nigerians and foreigners.

Ibeju-lekki is a growing town and has attracted a good number of hotels, resorts, and lounges. It offers you a wide array of fun activities. You can visit the white-sandy Eleko beach or give your family a treat at Funtopia, Tickle Bay, Omu Resort, La Tropicana, and many others. There’s literally something for everyone.
Ibeju-Lekki is home to one of Nigeria’s most palm-fringed beaches. Its beaches, landscapes, and lagoons make this area a prime tourist spot.
To those history lovers, Ibeju Lekki is also known for its historical significance. We have the Awolowo Museum, which is where the great Chief Awolowo was incarcerated during the period of his detention. There is Hinterland Slave Museum, this was were the forefathers were tied up and kept in chains.
