My posting this was necessitated as a result of the death of Nollywood actor Muna Obiekwe. May his soul rest in peace, Amen.

When lalasticlala posted news of his death yesterday and stated the cause of death as kidney failure I was shocked and decided to look into the cause of kidney failure, I was indeed enlightened about kidney disease. I found out a lot , but most surprising were habits that most Nigerians engage in which could cause kidney damage.

I know most folks on Nairaland hate lengthy epistles which may be boring to read so I'll briefly list those bad habits here, for a more detailed explanation you can find the URL links at the bottom of my post.

1. Delayed emptying of your bladder -Retaining urine in your bladder for a long time on a daily basis when pressed is a very bad idea. Long-term full bladder is easy to cause the bladder damage. That the urine stays at bladder for a long time can cause the bacteria breeding easily, once the urine refluxes back to ureter and kidneys, the toxic
substance cam result in the kidney infections, then urinary tract infection, and then nephritis, even Uremia. So when nature calls, answer it without delay.

2. Consuming too much salt - No more than 5.8 grams of salt should be eaten daily, so take it easy with that salt shaker.

3. Consuming too much meat - According to Harvard University, too much protein in your diet can harm the kidneys. The by product of protein digestion is
ammonia – a toxin your hard-working kidneys need to neutralize. More protein means more effort for the kidneys, which can, over time, lead to decreased function.

4. Consuming too much caffeine - We often consume more caffeine than we think we do. Caffeine is in many soft drinks and sodas, and before you know it, your blood pressure goes through the roof and your kidneys start complaining. Take it easy on the likes of Fanta, Coke, 7Up, Fayrouz, etc

5. Not drinking enough water – Our kidneys need to get properly hydrated to perform their functions. If we don’t drink enough, the toxins can start accumulating in the blood, as there isn’t enough fluid
to drain them through the kidneys. Drink about 12 glasses of water a day. An easy way to see if you’re drinking enough is to check the colour of your urine. The lighter in colour, the better.

6. Improper and untimely treatment of infections - Treat infections properly and on time and complete medication dosage.

7. Pain-killer abuse - Taking excessive amounts of analgesics to relive pain is a no no!

8. Too much alcohol consumption - The toxins found in alcohol not only damage the liver, but also your kidneys. According to Kidney Health Australia and American Kidney Fund, one way to avoid kidney disease is to drink alcohol in moderation.

9. Smoking -Smoking has been linked to arthrosclerosis. The narrowing and hardening of blood vessels affects the blood supply to all vital organs, including the kidneys. According to the study published in Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics,
two ci******es a day are enough to double the number of endothelial cells present in your blood. This is a signal of arterial damage. Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology cites many
different studies conducted since 2003 which all link smoking to decreased kidney function.

10. Lack of exercise - Exercise is another good way to protect your kidneys. A large study published in 2013 in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology suggested that postmenopausal women who
exercised had 31% lower risk of developing kidney stones. Generally speaking, maintaining a healthy weight will reduce your chances of kidney stones, so get moving

Your laughter rings in my ears. The sweet sound
echoes through my mind, capturing the memories
we made. Your sweet words remain in my heart, refusing to leave, ignoring my pleas, evading the supposed infraction. The sight of your smile was the sun in my sky. Clouds cover what once was mine. Yet regret won't let the light fade. Shadows cover the joy I once felt at the sound of your voice. No longer will I know this bliss, or have that satisfaction. Memories of you will forever haunt my soul. Thoughts of what might have been. Hopes chased into the dark night. A future once as bright as the glow you used to put on my face, is now marked by doubt and deception. That feeling I once knew. That flutter you once caused. I can't escape it. Try as I might.

If a girl admits that she likes you, know that it took her every ounce of courage she has. Idiot, don't take her for granted., The person who really loves you see what a mess you can be, how moody you can get, and how hard you are to handle. But still wants you in their life., Go ahead girl, let him hold your hand, and tell you he loves you. Enjoy the butterfliles you get when you hear his name. Let him text you all the time, and make you feel beautiful. Your in love with him. But don`t let him fool you, don`t let him be the onl, You Begin to Learn That Kisses Dont Always Mean Something and Promises Can Be Broken Just as Quickly as They Are Made and Sometimes Goodbyes Really Are Forever, life takes your dreams and turns them upside down. friends talk about you when you're not around. people make promises they just cant keep. and ive come to realise, talk is cheap. too often we dont realise what we have until its gone. too often we wait to, Letting go doesn't mean giving up... it means moving on. It is one of the hardest things a person can do. Starting at birth, we grasp on to anything we can get our hands on, and hold on as if we will cease to exist when we let go. We feel that letting go, I am strong because I am weak. I'm beautiful because I know my flaws. I'm a lover because I am a fighter. I'm fearless because I have been afraid. I'm wise because I have been foolish. & I can laugh because I Have known sadness., I don't pretend to know what love is for everyone, but I can tell you what it is for me; love is knowing all about someone, and still wanting to be with them more than any other person, love is trusting them enough to tell them everything about yourself,, "If you love two people at the same time, choose the second one, because if you really loved the first one you wouldn’t have fallen for the second" - Johnny Depp..., While you SCREAM at your woman there's a man wishing he could talk softly in her ear... While you HUMILIATE, OFFEND & INSULT her There's a man flirting with her & reminding her how wonderful she is. While you HURT your woman There's a man wishing he could be the lucky man..

everybody else.
4. Daily exercise will burn off the stress chemicals.

8. Hugs, kisses and laughter: Have fun and don't be afraid to share your feelings with others.
9. Identify stressors and plan to deal with them better next time.
10. Judge your own performance realistically; don't set goals out of your own reach.
11. Keep a positive attitude, your outlook will influence outcomes and the way others treat you.
12. Limit alcohol, drugs and other stimulants, they affect your perception and behaviour.

15. Outdoor activities by yourself, or with friends and family, can be a great way to relax.
16. Play your favourite music rather than watching television.
17. Quit smoking: It is stressing your body daily, not to mention killing you too.
18. Relationships: Nurture and enjoy them, learn to listen more and talk less.
19. Sleep well, with a firm mattress and a supportive pillow; don't overheat yourself and allow plenty of ventilation.
20. Treat yourself once a week with a massage, dinner out, the movies: Moderation is the key.
21. Understand things from the other person's point of view.
22. Verify information from the source before exploding.

CREATIVE THINKING

In our Western system of thinking, there is a strong bias towards using the left brain. We tend to prefer ideas that fit preconceived patterns, systems that have been proved and solutions that are low-risk. But in a time of change, where we need to solve major intractable problems, i.e. using the right-brain. Here are 7 ways to be more creative.

THINK LIKE A CHILD

As adults, we tend to think in a conditioned way aimed at showing how clever we are. Yet, as children, we are simply spontaneous and far more curious in our thinking. To re-capture your childhood curiosity, allow yourself to just wonder at things, to be completely present in the here and now, and to detach yourself from what you thought was real

10 Ways to Live Longer

1. Sleep Well. Don’t oversleep or be sleep deprived. According to a February 2002 study in the Archives of General Psychiatry people sleeping more than 8 hours per day had a significantly higher death rate than normal. That doesn’t mean that you deprive yourself either. People sleeping less than 4 hours also had a high death rate. People who slept between 6 and 7 hours lived the longest.

2. Be Positive. According to August 2002 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, people who had a positive outlook as appose to pessimists had a 50% decrease risk of early death. Those who are positive about life handle stress and life situations better. Optimists also have lower blood pressure which is the result how they react to stress and adversities.

3. Have More Spousal S*x. Couples who do are generally less stressed, happier, and better rested. All these factors contribute to a lower blood pressure reading. An April 2004 Journal of the American Medical Association found that “high ej*******on frequency was related to decreased risk of total prostate cancer.” Cheating has the opposite effect, as it will definitely add more stress to you life. Stress = shorter life so stay faithful.

4. Have a Pet. People with dogs were shown to require less visits to their physicians. This could be due to fact that owning pets tends to decrease loneliness and depression, encouraging laughing and exercise. According to a study lead be Erica Friedmann heart attack victims who have pets live 12% longer than the people that did not.

5. Get a VAP Test. Cholesterol tests to detect heart disease has shown to be not as reliable as you may think. Half of all heart attack victims shows normal levels of cholesterol. A better test to take is the VAP test developed by the Birmingham, Ala.-based lab Atherotech. They have shown to detect 90% of heart attack disease patients. It’s important to get this test early as heart disease is cumulative, and often could be managed or corrected more easily at early stages. This is a simple blood test that could be done at most doctors’ offices.

6. Be Rich. Easily said than done right? If you don’t fit this category, strive for it. Keep your finances in check and don’t overspend. Money problems will add stress, which will shorten your life. It will also limit your access to life extending tools. Never less, The National Center for Health Statistics shows that 24% of families with income below $20,000 are “limited” by chronic disease. Whereas, only 6% of families with an income above $75,000 are affected. Possible explanations could be the fact that the rich have better access to health care, food, housing, and safer neighborhoods.

7. Stop Smoking. This one is obvious. According to findings from a study that appeared in the July 2003 issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention, middle age men who are long term heavy smokers, are at a higher risk of developing aggressive forms of prostate cancer than men who have never smoked. The Archives of Gerontology and Geriatrics study also states that cigarette smoking has been clearly linked to the most common causes of death in the elderly. The study states “Smoking is–for all but some exceptional subjects–incompatible with successful aging and compromises life expectancy even in extreme longevity,”.

8. Subdue Your Anger. Angry people live shorter lives. It’s due to the fact that they tend to have higher blood pressure which make them prone to heart disease. According to a 2002 study by the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, men who were classified as having the highest level of anger in response to stress were over three times more likely to develop premature heart disease when compared to men who reported lower anger responses. Additionally, angry men were over six times more likely to have a heart attack by the age of 55. With all that said, try to stay calm and collected and don’t sweat the small stuff. It could literally kill you.

9. Eat Your Antioxidants. Fruits and vegetables are a good source of antioxidants which help repair aging and damaged cells harmed by free radicals. Studies show that high levels of free radicals lead to degenerative diseases, including atherosclerosis, Alzheimer’s and cancer. Some common foods with good levels of antioxidants are: cinnamon, cloves, blueberries, artichokes, and certain type of beans.

10. Exercise. Studies show that staying physically active and exercising regularly can help prevent or delay many diseases and disabilities. Even moderate exercise and physical activity can improve the health of people who are frail or who have diseases that accompany aging. Exercise is good for your body, mind and heart. If you’re not active start today.

I hope these tips were helpful in your pursuit to a longer happier
life. If you find them useful, print them out and post it on your wall to remind yourself everyday.

Below are the basic rules you must follow while you dine:

1. Put the napkin on your lap.
2. Wait until everyone has been served to begin eating.
3. Everyone begins eating at the same time.
4. Do not make sounds when eating.
5. Sit up straight at the table and bring the food to your mouth: do not lean down to your plate.
6. Do not lean on your arm or elbow while eating (as well as before or after eating): you may rest only your hand and wrist on the edge of the table.
7. Try to be friendly with others. If you are a man, you should pay attention to ladies sitting closest to you. Pass the dishes to them, serve them, etc. Equal attention must be paid to children.
8. Hold the knife in your right hand, and fork – in your left hand.
9. Cut large pieces of meat, potatoes and vegetables into bite-size pieces; eat the pieces one at a time.
10. Each time you cut a small piece with the knife, put it into your mouth with a fork.
11. When eating spaghetti, hold your fork in the right hand. Wind the noodles up on your fork: the spaghetti on your fork should be eaten in one bite. It is very impolite to eat half your noodles and allow the other half to fall back on your plate.
12. While eating, remember not to talk with your mouth full of food.
13. When the hostess/host offers you food, give her/him a direct answer; if you refuse the first time, she might not ask you again.
14. At the table, ask others to pass you dishes that are out of your reach. Good _expression to know is: “Please pass me the___________.”
15. When you have finished your meal, place your knife and fork side by side on the plate.
16. Never use toothpick at the table: it is impolite.
17. Before you leave the table, refold your napkin and put it beside your plate.
18. When you are unsure what to do, observe the way your western friends eat in order to avoid mistakes.
