NAHCON Addresses Shortage of Ramadan Umrah Visa

The current challenges faced by Nigerian Muslims in obtaining Umrah visas for travel to Saudi Arabia during Ramadan are deeply regrettable and primarily stem from the misuse of privileges granted in the visa issuance process.

Umrah visas are allocated to countries based on quotas with Ramadan Umrah visas usually more expensive. Of recent, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia extended the visa validity to 90 days. It is obvious many Nigerians secured these visas at lower costs during other periods, obviously in anticipation of performing Umrah during the holy month of Ramadan with them. These individuals exploited the visa validity extension by either prolonging their stays in the kingdom or holding onto visas without utilizing them until Ramadan, resulting in a shortage of available visas slots for other Nigerians.

The high demand for Umrah visas during Ramadan further exacerbates this shortage, leaving many Nigerians unable to fulfill their religious obligations. So far, few visas do drop occasionally based on number of Nigerians that free up the space by departing from Saudi Arabia, but paying for such few slots is a gamble hence pilgrims for the lesser Hajj are advised to be wiser.

Efforts are being made by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) in addressing this issue. NAHCON’s Saudi Liaison Officer has engaged in multiple discussions with the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah over the situation. Though these discussions have been constructive, he affirmed that the visa allocation follow a computerized system.

Additionally, NAHCON has officially written a letter communicating its concerns directly to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, outlining the implications of unavailable visas for Nigerian Tour Operators. Furthermore, the Chairman of NAHCON, Malam Jalal Ahmad Arabi, has personally visited the Saudi embassy in Nigeria to explore potential solutions to this matter.

We want to assure all Nigerian Umrah hopefuls that NAHCON remains committed to resolving this issue. NAHCON will continue to work tirelessly in collaboration with relevant stakeholders to find a satisfactory resolution to the visa inaccessibility.

NAHCON Extends Hajj Registration Deadline

In response to the heartfelt concerns raised by religious clerics, State Pilgrims’ Welfare Boards/Agencies/Commissions, State Governors and other stakeholders regarding closure of 2024 Hajj registration, the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) is pleased to announce Federal Government’s approval for an extension of the deadline. The new date is set for January 31, 2024, providing an additional opportunity for individuals to participate in this sacred pilgrimage.

The overwhelming request for extension from various religious communities underscores the significance of ensuring accessibility to a broader spectrum of the faithfuls eager to embark on the spiritual journey of Hajj.

Consequently, NAHCON is confident that before expiration of the new deadline, with the support of its sister agencies, the Commission would have determined the total cost of 2024 Hajj. The extension therefore provides a window for new registrant to do so and by the end of January, those who need to balance up payment would be able to do so as well.

NAHCON seizes this chance to remind intending pilgrims and other stakeholders that the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has slated 25th February as end date for signing all contracts, signaling the end of payments into IBAN accounts. With this extension, NAHCON has barely a month to finalize payment of all Hajj deposits into its IBAN account for the 2024 Hajj.

This extension, even though overstretches NAHCON’s preparatory timeline, reflects the Commission’s Chairman, Malam Jalal Ahmad Arabi’s commitment to accommodating the concerns of stakeholders. He expressed gratitude to religious leaders, state boards, and governors for their advocacy on behalf of the pilgrims. Malam Arabi described this collaborative effort as a testament to the shared commitment to facilitating a meaningful and inclusive Hajj experience for all. He prayed all Hajj handlers would utilize this opportunity well for success of 2024 Hajj operations.

📍 Rami al-Jamarat

ℹ️ Rami al-Jamarat (Arabic: رمي الجمرات; meaning “stoning of the Jamarat”), sometimes referred to as the “Stoning of the Devil” is a rite carried out by Hajj pilgrims whereby small pebbles are thrown at three stone structures in Mina. The act of throwing stones at the Jamarat is known as “Rami”.

ℹ️ There are three Jamarat which are known as:
* Jamarah al-Aqaba or Jamarah al-Kubra (the big pillar).
* Jamarah al-Wusta (the medium or middle pillar).
* Jamarah al-Ula or al-Sugra (the small pillar).

ℹ️ The distance between the first and second pillars is about 150 metres and the distance between the second and third pillars is about 120 metres.

ℹ️ Rami is performed on:
* Yawm al-Nahr (the Day of Sacrifice) – 10th of Dhul Hijjah (Day 3 of Hajj).
* Ayyam al-Tashreeq (the Days of Drying Meat) – 11th, 12th & 13th of Dhul Hijjah – Days 4, 5 and 6 of Hajj.

ℹ️ On Yawm al-Nahr, only Rami of Jamarah al-Aqaba (the big pillar) will be performed. It is forbidden to pelt the other two pillars, although no penalty is due if this is done.

ℹ️ On Ayyam al-Tashreeq, Rami of all pillars will be performed on each day, starting from the smallest pillar to the largest. However, carrying it out in a different order won’t necessitate a penalty, nor will Rami have to be repeated.
