DIARY OF A NIGERIAN TRAVELLER
Hi, am a Nigerian businessman and a regular traveller. I will be sharing my personal diary with you on this platform. Thanks.

SATURDAY JULY 19, 2014 ---- MONDAY JULY 21, 2014
It was raining heavily this morning as I rose up to pick up my phone which was ringing. When I checked the time, it was 5am. Simon and my wife were sleeping soundly due to the cool weather.
ME: Hello!
THE CALLER: It’s me segun! Guess what?
ME: What?
THE CALLER: My apartment is flooded, am confused and I need your help.
ME: Oh my God! I’ll come by 7!
THE CALLER: Thanks!
March 2 has always meant much to me. I remember it as the day I was forced into deep reflection on the reason for global disasters. It was on this day many years ago that I rented my first apartment.
As I dropped my phone on the table, I bowed down my head and it brings back the memory of those who lost their lives and properties during the Lagos flood of 2011.
It rained heavily on Sunday, July 10, 2011. When it eventually stopped, only a few areas in Lagos, Nigeria’s economic hub, were spared by the treacherous flood that ravaged several lives and properties. On that day, nine-year-old Bunmi left home for a pharmaceutical store. Her mission was to buy drugs for her sick mum. Unfortunately, she didn’t succeed in returning home, even though she tried to.
About 10 metres to her home in Bariga area of Lagos State, she needed to get past one of the erosion-created gullies that transverse her neighbourhood but she couldn’t get past the gully. Her small feet slipped and she fell into a four feet deep gully while the treacherous flood swept her at top speed, smashed her against several objects and finally deposited her at the foot of a banana tree near a carpentry workshop. By the time she was found later that evening, her clothes were in tatters and she was unconscious. Fortunately, she regained consciousness from her coma on the third day.
My friend, Michael Ene who lives in Yaba area of Lagos was away on official duty. When he returned, he opened the door of his apartment and walked into a flooded and stinking sitting room comparable to a mini-canal. A couple returning from their honeymoon opened the door of their rented 3bedroom apartment to enjoy a deserved rest only to be flushed back to their hotel room by the treacherous flood.
A Toyota Camry that was carefully parked in front of a house at Iyana Ipaja area of Lagos State was flushed into a nearby canal while the owner was busy packing water away from his flooded apartment. In Shomolu and Akoka area of Lagos State, the treacherous flood covered the entire ground floor of several buildings forcing the occupants to move upstairs for safety during the downpour only to return later in the midnight to pack the water away from their apartments.
Prime locations like Lekki and Victoria Island were not spared as many occupants of luxury apartments were forced to abandon them due to the excess of the damage. The treacherous flood covered the entire ground floor of several block of flats, duplexes, storey buildings and bungalows.
I cannot forget the pathetic incident involving a couple and their two kids who were drowned in their car by the treacherous flood at Surulere when they drove into a canal that was level with the road. A missing boy was found dead three days later in a gutter somewhere at Ibafo when the flood has reduced in the area.
Surprisingly, many people blamed their landlords and agents for the destruction of their properties. They claimed the landlord and the agent must have known that their rented and leased apartments could be flooded. Even a careless graduate, who has been warned to laminate his certificates a week before the flood tore them to pieces, blamed his landlord and his agent for his misfortune.
However, the Lagos flood was a curse and blessing in disguise. It was a blessing because many homes that should have been renovated were finally renovated by the shocked homeowners. Many apartments that should have been given a face lift were finally renovated by their occupants. The incident also created more jobs for building professionals, artisans and menial job seekers. The flood also increased the determination of the Lagos State Government in its drive towards achieving a megacity status to focus on environmental projects across the State.
Simon was still sleeping when I gently tapped my wife and informed her before leaving the house to join my friend.
I returned later in the evening that day!
To be continued!

WHERE DO YOU PLAN TO SPEND YOUR VACATION THIS YEAR?

5 MOST PEACEFUL COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD
Although it seems like the world is becoming more and more cruel, according to Global Peace Index, the following are five most peaceful countries in the world.
1. DENMARK
Denmark tops the list of the most peaceful countries on Earth since it’s really a safe place to live.
Even when Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, was under occupation by the N***s during the World War II, it still did not fight.

The fact is, people in Denmark prefer to focus on economic matters, instead of involving themselves in various armed conflicts.

Danish people are very friendly, open and helpful.

2. NORWAY
Norway is the country with the highest level of human development in the globe. Besides, the government of Oslo always places peace at the forefront of the priorities of the country. Though the Anders Berring Breivik incident was extraordinary, Global Peace Index says Norway is one of world’s most peaceful countries and friendly and safe place to live.

3 . SINGAPORE
Since achieving its independence in 1965 as a sovereign Republic, Singapore has always concentrated on being a great neighbour, through the establishment of social, peaceful, economic, cordial political relations with all countries. Aside being one of the world’s wealthies countries, the homicide and crime rates are lower than the criminal rates.

4. SLOVENIA
The country got its lowest marks in funding for the United Nations peacekeeping missions, number of police and security officers, level of perceived criminality in the society, number of organised internal conflicts, violent protests, and number of internal and external wars fought.

Slovenia is a fantastic travel destination with its wonderful cities like Maribor andLjubljana teeming with unique culture.

5. SWEDEN
Although Sweden is one of the biggest weapon exporters in Europe, the country has a low level of robberies (9, 000 a year) compared to the United States (about 350, 000 a year)!

Besides, Sweden has not been to war and has not participated in any combats for two centuries. “

AIR SECRETS YOUR PILOT CANNOT TELL YOU..REVEALED!!!!!!!!!

1. Turbulence is annoying, but it’s not a safety issue.
Do you grip your armrests every time the plane hits a patch of rough air? According to the pilots we spoke with, it’s really nothing to worry about. “Turbulence is far and away the number-one concern of anxious passengers,” says Patrick Smith, who has been a major commercial airline pilot for 21 years and is the author of AskthePilot.com. “That always seems so strange to me. We pilots think of it as a comfort—not a safety—issue.” The anxiety caused by a bumpy airplane ride could be due to the common belief that turbulence can break off a wing or flip the plane. “For all intents and purposes, that cannot happen,” Smith says. “Aircrafts are subjected to extremely intense conditions during testing—more so than the most seasoned pilots will ever experience.” In the rare circumstance that a passenger does get injured during turbulence, it’s usually because the person has ignored the "fasten seatbelt" sign and bumped his head or twisted his ankle while walking around.

2. Takeoff has its risks, but they are extremely low.
No pilot will ever say that any part of the flying experience is unsafe, yet they will admit that takeoff is the most critical part of a flight. “The airplane is heavy, full of fuel and flying at a relatively low speed, and the engines are at or near full power,” says George,* who has been a major commercial airline pilot for 22 years. “An engine failure shortly after liftoff requires quick recognition of the situation.” For that reason, engine failures are practiced in a flight simulator every six months to a year. However, according to the pilots we spoke with, the real deal is extremely rare.

AVIATION ACCIDENTS ARE INEVITABLE, BUT CONTROLLABLE TOO. – Aviation Minister

Oduah made the submission while fielding questions from State House correspondents on investigations into the Thursday Lagos crash, the safety of the nation’s airspace and the suspension of Dana Air’s operations, among other issues.

While reacting to a comment that the latest crash had made nonsense of government’s much-talked about reforms in the aviation sector, the minister said, “We do not pray for accidents but they are inevitable. But we will continue to do everything to ensure that we do not have accidents. But an accident is an act of God.

There are shared responsibilities, starting from the man that carries your luggage to the man that makes sure that your boarding pass is issued to you.

Oduah disclosed that the preliminary report on the Associated Arline crash would be ready in a couple of weeks.

She said the ministry was waiting for the experts from France before they could open up the engine of the plane and to find out the cause of the accident.

She insisted that notwithstanding the latest crash, Nigerians should not be afraid to fly because the nation’s airspace was safe.

She however refused to state the operational issues noticed in the case of the airline.
Oduah added that 90 per cent of private jet operators were operating outside the mandate and outside the policy.

She said that was why the government had to review the policy.

She said notwithstanding this reality, the Federal Government would continue to ensure there were no accidents.

PRE-TAKE OFF PRAYERS SAVED US FROM CRASH: by Feyi Agagu
***********************************************

A close family friend of Feyi, son of late Chief Agagu, who is one of the survivors of the ill fated Associated Airlines flight, told Vanguard that he (Feyi) was initially reluctant to enter the plane after seeing how old it looked. (The exact plane pictured right). He and others survived basically by sitting at the back of the plane. Below is what a family insider Feyi spoke to said;

“The young man said that once they got to the tarmac before boarding and once he sighted the plane, what struck him was the seemingly very old look of the plane. Feyi said he didn’t like the looks of the plane. He also said but for the importance and significance of the trip, his inner sense didn’t feel comfortable boarding the plane.
“In fact, Feyi said he told another survivor, Femi Akinsanya, that the plane looked too old and he didn’t feel like boarding. But Feyi said he was told not to get himself worked up needlessly since this was not going to be his first time aboard a plane neither would this be the first old-looking plane that he would board. That was how he said he boarded the plane”.

“Feyi recounted how he and Femi Akinsanya boarded the plane and moved straight to the back end to take up seats. Why Feyi chose the back seat”, the source said, “was more a function of his state of mind about the state of the plane rather than a preference for taking a back seat.

“When they sat down, Feyi told me that he and Femi simply prayed that they should just take off and land safely, oblivious of what lay ahead of them. “Feyi said once they took off, everything happened so fast. What he also told me was that both he and Femi noticed what looked like a crack not far from where they sat at the rear end of the plane

“He said everything happened so fast that by the time the plane crashed on the ground, it was that crack that had been noticed earlier that transformed into a gapping exit point upon impact on the ground.

“Feyi said the exit point created was where he and Femi escaped through”.

Another source further revealed that most of the survivors of the crash appeared to be those seated at the rear end of the plane.

Though 23years old, the plane, according to Balami David, the President of the National Association of Pilots and Engineers, during a television interview, reportedly operated some days before the ill-fated flight.

PLANE CRASH OVERTURNED
*********************

Another plane crash was averted this morning in Sokoko when a Saudi bound Kabo Air plane carrying 400 passengers from Kano made an emergency landing at the Sir Abubakar III international Airport when its tyres exploded immediately after take off.

The Boeing 747 jumbo jet, left Kano on Friday en route Saudi Arabia but had to divert to Sokoto when the incident happened.

It happened that all the passengers aboard the airline had been successfully evacuated from the plane and lodged in a hotel in the state.

This is coming barely 72 hours after an Embraer aircraft belonging to Associated Airlines with registration number, 5N-BIT crashed in Lagos shortly after take-off from the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.

Turns out our planes are no longer safe

A MUST READ
-----------------

Two men were walking along one summer day. Soon it became too hot to go any further and, seeing a large plane tree nearby, they threw themselves on the ground to rest in its shade. Gazing up into the branches one man said to the other,

What a useless tree this is. It does not have fruit or nuts that we can eat and we cannot even use its wood for anything.”

“Don’t be so ungrateful,” rustled the tree in reply. “I am being extremely useful to you at this very moment, shielding you from the hot sun. And you call me a good-for-nothing!”

Moral Lesson:

Nothing is useless, except when you refuse to observe its angle of importance.

06/10/2013

The story goes that some time ago, a man punished his 3-year-old daughter for wasting a roll of gold wrapping paper. Money was tight and he became infuriated when the child tried to decorate a box to put under the Christmas tree. Nevertheless, the little girl brought the gift to her father the next morning and said, “This is for you, Daddy.”
The man was embarrassed by his earlier overreaction, but his anger flared again when he found out the box was empty. He yelled at her, stating, “Don’t you know, when you give someone a present, there is supposed to be something inside? The little girl looked up at him with tears in her eyes and cried, “Oh, Daddy, it’s not empty at all. I blew kisses into the box. They’re all for you, Daddy.”
The father was crushed. He put his arms around his little girl, and he begged for her forgiveness.
Only a short time later, an accident took the life of the child. It is also told that her father kept that gold box by his bed for many years and, whenever he was discouraged, he would take out an imaginary kiss and remember the love of the child who had put it there.
Moral: In a very real sense, each one of us, as humans beings, have been given a gold container filled with unconditional love from our children, family members, friends, and God. There is simply no other possession, anyone could hold, more precious than this.

How To Fly To Mars And Beyond In Weeks Instead Of Months
********************************************

Theoretical physicist Friedwardt Winterberg presented, "To Mars in Weeks by Thermonuclear Micro-Bomb Propulsion," at the Reid Conference Center at NASA's Langley Research Center on Tuesday.

In his lecture, Winterberg discussed the rewards and challenges of a nuclear bomb propulsion system – the preferred candidate for an impulse-high thrust system in spacecraft. His second approach to interstellar travel would be mastering the production and storing of antimatter that could lead to matter-antimatter laser propulsion. The first system could yield speeds about one-fifth the velocity of light. The second and more difficult would be closer to the speed of light or 186,000 miles per second.

Winterberg is a theoretical physicist and research professor at the University of Nevada, Reno. With more than 260 publications and three books, he is known for his research in general relativity, Planck scale physics, nuclear fusion and plasmas. His work in nuclear rocket propulsion earned him the 1979 Hermann Oberth Gold Medal of the Wernher von Braun International Space Flight Foundation and a 1981 citation by the Nevada legislature.

He is also an honorary member of the German Aerospace Society Lilienthal-Oberth. He received his Master of Science degree from the University of Frankfurt and his doctorate in physics from the Max Planck Institute as a student of Werner Heisenberg -- the German theoretical physicist who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1932 for the creation of quantum mechanics.

Disturbed Aerodynamics: Safety Issues
****************************

A part of understanding airplane aerodynamics is also knowing how the forces involved can be disturbed. What is popularly known as “turbulence” results from a variety of causes and takes different forms.

Turbulence occurs where different air currents are brought together and cause disruptive conditions.

This can be due to the mixing of warm and cold air currents, mountain range obstruction, changing wind directions, or erratic winds due to thunderstorms and other severe weather.

In normal scenarios, the airplane will experience a slight bumpiness and/or tilting of the wings.

While turbulence is not normally dangerous, there are certain situations that can pose a threat to the passengers and crew. With severe weather, the airplane can experience structural stress and damage.

The FAA has regulations ensuring that airplanes are built to withstand intense aerodynamic forces, so the weather would have to be extremely powerful.

If the turbulence occurs at low altitudes, pilots have to be aware of wind direction and altitude loss. At higher altitudes, pilots can change their heading or altitude to avoid serious turbulence.

In this case, good communications with air traffic and navigation controllers is paramount for maintaining flight safety. In all cases, the pilot has to be aware of the dangers due to turbulence.

If you have flown as a passenger on an airline, you will no doubt have heard the pilot ask you to keep your seat belt fastened while in your seat. Sometimes turbulence is unexpected and can be quite abrupt. There have been several cases where passengers and flight attendants have been injured during abrupt encounters with turbulence.
