Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park

Decorated with beautiful gardens, fountains and flowerbeds, this place is surely a nice place to relax and unwind. The park was built in memory of the first president of the country, Kwame Nkrumah, who fought for the independence of Ghana. In the center of the park, you will find the graves of the man and his wife. Also in this park is a museum where the things of the former president are kept and put on display. The stories of his campaign for independence is also made known to all in this same museum.

One of the must see places in Accra.

CAPE COAST CASTLE

Cape Coast Castle (Swedish: Carolusborg) is one of about forty "slave castles", or large commercial forts, built on the Gold Coast of West Africa (now Ghana) by European traders. It was originally a Portuguese "feitoria" or trading post, established in 1555, which they named Cabo Corso. However, in 1653 the Swedish Africa Company constructed a timber fort there. It originally was a centre for the trade in timber and gold. It was later used in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Other Ghanaian slave castles include Elmina Castle and Fort Christiansborg. They were used to hold enslaved Africans before they were loaded onto ships and sold in the Americas, especially the Caribbean. This "gate of no return" was the last stop before crossing the Atlantic Ocean. Cape Coast Castle, along with other forts and castles in Ghana, are included on the UNESCO World Heritage List because of their testimony to the Atlantic gold and slave trades.

Kakum National Park

Tucked away in the Assin Attandanso Reserve is the Kakum National Park and Canopy Walkway that offers visitors spectacular scenery and a fascinating wildlife experience along with modern camping facilities. The park’s best-known feature is undoubtedly its 7 suspension bridges which form a 333-meter long canopy walkway, suspended up to 27 meters above the forest floor from trees that are over 300 years old. The canopy walk is only one of Kakum’s many delights. There are a variety of trails and guided walks that allow visitors to experience the solitude of the rainforest. It’s also a premier site for bird watchers, with over 300 species including eight species of global conservation concern. Mammals include forest elephant, leopard, bongo, bushbuck and many primates, but game viewing is difficult. Also, more than 600 butterfly species have been recorded.
The forest has wild life which can be seen in the night and professional guides are always available to take you on a guided night tour.

25/10/2022

Assin Manso Ancestral Slave River Park was one of the largest slave markets for gathering people to sell into slavery during the infamous trans-Atlantic slave trade. It is especially worth seeing as a prelude to viewing Cape Coast slave castle since you will be following the route taken by the ancestors of many African Americans.

It was the final link in the slavery route from northern Ghana and was known to have been the largest slave market for the merchant supplying slaves on the forts and castles on the coast.
Trans – Atlantic slave trade came about when people were needed to work on agricultural and mines since the Europeans are not suitable to the climate and not able to survive the tropical disease during the agricultural and mines work. Trans – Atlantic slave trade because, already manufactured goods (to***co, spirits, beads, cloths, guns etc.) were taken from Europe to Africa in exchange of human beings. Then the exchanged goods (human beings) are shipped to work on plantations and mines. The merchants then return to Europe with the produce from the slave’s labor plantations (cloths, sugar, to***co, etc.). The transport of the slaves from Africa to America forms the middle passage of the triangular trade.

Fort St. Jago, Elmina (1660s)

A small Portuguese chapel dedicated to Saint Jago (also known as Fort Coenraadsburg) now sits on a high hill opposite St. George’s Castle (Elmina Castle), in the Central Region of Ghana. This fort is a good illustration of a people learning from their history. In 1637, the Dutch installed heavy guns on the hill from where they had barraged the weakest side of Portuguese-controlled St. George’s Castle, forcing its surrender.
Built for purely military reasons, that is, the defence and protection of St. George’s Castle, the fort had only military quarters and no commercial warehouses. Its strongest bastions are trained inland, from where an attack would have most likely emanated.
The fort has been, in recent history, used as a prison, hospital and rest house.

To climax the week, we are going to talk about the **Elmina Castle**

It was the first trading post built on the Gulf of Guinea, making it the oldest European building in existence in sub -Saharan Africa. Elmina is also a picturesque fishing town along Ghana’s coast, not far from Cape Coast. It is home to one of Ghana’s biggest attractions, St George’s Castle. Built by the Portuguese in 1482, it was later captured by the Dutch 150 years later and became the headquarters of their West Indies Company for the next 250 years.

Gold exports were soon replaced by slaves and the tours through the dungeons will give you a good idea of how gruesome a trade it was. The Castle houses a small museum and guided tours are available. The stark beauty of the white-washed Castle walls contrast deeply with the dark history of this place.

Fort William, Anomabu (1753)

In 1753, the British Parliament voted enormous sums for the construction of a new trading fort in Anomabu, now part of the Central Region of Ghana. Completed by 1757, it was erected on ‘an eroded shelf of hard rock close to a sandy beach indentation with a sheltered anchorage’ .

Earlier, in 1674, the English had built a small fort, named Fort Charles, after the reigning monarch King Charles II. The English demolished Fort Charles in 1731, to prevent its capture and use by another European company - notably their archrival in overseas colonisation, the French. The French, however, rebuilt a fort where Fort Charles once stood. Regretting the loss of their Anomabu fort, the English hastened to then build a new one - Fort William.

The fort was probably christened Fort William by 19th century commander Brodie Cruickshank in honour of King William IV, upon the completion of another one storey Fort William is considered ‘one of the handsomest and best built of the Coast’ .
Once a rest house and a post office, then a state prison (till 2001), Fort William now serves Anomabu as a community library.

Many people do not know about stingless bees, especially African species, nor have many sampled their honey, pollen and propolis, delectable activities offered at the ISBC. In addition to beekeeping, the ISBC also serves as a station for international research.

17/10/2022

Fort Goede Hoop or Fort Good Hope was a fort on the Dutch Gold Coast, established in 1667 near Senya Beraku. Early in 1782, Captain Thomas Shirley in the 50-gun ship Leander and the sloop-of-war Alligator sailed to the Dutch Gold Coast. Britain was at war with The Netherlands and Shirley captured the small Dutch forts at Mouri (Fort Nassau - 20 guns), Kormantin (Courmantyne or - 32 guns), Apam (Fort Lijdzaamheid or Fort Patience - 22 guns), Senya Beraku (Fort Goede Hoop - 18 guns), and Accra (Fort Crêvecoeur or Ussher Fort - 32 guns).[1] The fort was occupied between 1782 and 1785 by the British, as well as by the local Akim population between 1811 and 1816. In 1868, the fort was ceded to the United Kingdom in a large trade of forts between the Netherlands and Britain.

Fort Amsterdam, is a former slave fort in Kormantin, Central region, Ghana. It was built by the English between 1638 and 1645 as Fort Cormantin or Fort Courmantyne, and was captured by admiral Michiel de Ruyter of the Dutch West India Company in 1665, in retaliation for the capture of several Dutch forts by the English Admiral Holmes in 1664. It was subsequently made part of the Dutch Gold Coast, and remained part of it until the fort was traded with the British in 1868. The Fort is located at Abandze, on the north-east of Cape Coast in the Mfantseman District of the Central Region of Ghana. Because of its testimony to European economic and colonial influence in West Africa and its historical importance in the Atlantic slave trade, the fort was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979 along with other forts and castles in Ghana.

Takoradi Fishing Harbor

The local fishing harbour is one of Takoradi’s most attractive sights. You’ll like the vista with the various colourful boats and canoes lining the shore. The local fishing harbour is the finest spot to get a sense of Sekondi-authentic Takoradi’s culture and way of life.

Taxis are inexpensive online, and you can catch a ride to the Sekondi fishing harbour to avoid getting lost. A local fisherman will take you on a canoe ride for a fee or a tip. I haven’t tried it before and am not sure whether it will work, but it’s worth a go.

Fort Santo Antonio

Fort Santo Antonio, subsequently known as Fort Saint Anthony, is one of the oldest forts built by Europeans during the Gold Coast period. It was located in Axim, Ghana’s Western Region.

During the Portuguese occupation, a trading post was erected near the Ankobra River in Axin, but it was abandoned due to raids by the Axim people. In 1515, they built Santo Antonio, a large triangular fort on a small point adjacent to the River Ankobia. Following St. George’s Castle, the Portuguese constructed Fort Santo Antonio (Elmina Castle). A three-meter deep rock-cut trench was built on the landward side to improve protection.

The Dutch handed over the Fort to the British authority in 1872 and left the Gold Coast. The British forfeited their monopoly over the slave trade and their control over the area that had previously been their dominion by handing over the Fort to them.

Following Ghana’s independence in the 1950s, the British handed up the Fort to the country. It was restored to use as government and local government offices
