What’s the tea ☕ about the Amazonian Statue? ⏬

The Amazons of Dahomey are known as the only all-female military force in modern history. They are celebrated in both Western stories and a 30-meter tall bronze statue in Cotonou, Benin. This statue honors the brave warriors of the Kingdom of Dahomey, a West African empire that existed from 1625 to 1894.

The origins of the Amazons are debated. Some people say they started as elephant hunters who later took up fighting. Others, like historian Bienvenu Akoha, believe they were the protectors of Queen Tassi Hangbe, the first Amazon. Queen Hangbe inspired women to join roles like hunting and created a group of female fighters.

Under later kings, King Gezo officially included the Amazons in the military. Led by Seh D**g Hong Beh, they captured the Egba fortress in 1851 and fought against the French in 1882 for trade rights. They showed great skill in battle even when they were outnumbered. The Dahomey Amazons came to an end when the Dahomey Kingdom declined at the end of the 19th century.
