BULGARIA AND ROMANIA WILL BE PART OF THE SCHENGEN AREA FROM 31 MARCH.

From 31 March this year, Romania and Bulgaria will join the Schengen zone, which allows free movement between member states for 400 million citizens.

The two countries have been members of the European Union (EU) since 2007 but as they were not part of the border-free area, travelers were still required to show passports upon entry.
In 2024, border controls for the two countries will be simplified

According to Euronews Reports, Travellers arriving by air or sea from other Schengen zone countries will no longer have to show passports upon arrival. This means passengers on flights, cruises, and ferries will not be subject to checks.

Immigration Seeks Entry For All Nigerians With Expired Passports
An expired passport is a valid proof of citizenship, NIS said.

The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has confirmed that it sent a document to embassies, high commissions, concerned parties, and airlines asking that no person who can prove their Nigerian citizenship be denied entry into the country, noting that an expired passport is a valid proof of citizenship.

This is absolutely correct.

We sent out a document (again) in this regard to embassies, high commissions, concerned parties and airlines in this regard.

You can’t refuse a Nigerian (with valid means of identity - expired or not) into his/her country.

Nigeria belongs to us all.

KENYA TO SCRAP VISAS FOR ALL AFRICAN NATIONALS

There is a strong possibility that Visas to visit Kenya would be scrapped for other African nationals from next year as part of a movement towards opening up trade and travel within the continent.

“By the end of this year, no African will be required to have a visa to come to Kenya,” Kenya’s president, William Ruto, said at a climate change conference in Congo-Brazzaville.

According To the Kenyan President Costly and time-consuming visa requirements, as well as high air fares, have long creaed barriers to inter-African travel for African passport holders.

According to reports, the development has been widely praised as Kenya may become the next African nation to scrap visas for African nationals after Seychelles, The Gambia, Benin and Rwanda.

UAE lifts visa ban on Nigerians, resumes flight operations

The United Arab Emirates, on Monday, lifted its months-long visa ban on Nigerians.

Consequently, Etihad and Emirates Airlines will resume flight operations in Nigeria immediately.

“President Bola Tinubu and President of the United Arab Emirates, Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, on Monday in Abu Dhabi, have finalised a historic agreement, which has resulted in the immediate cessation of the visa ban placed on Nigerian travellers

“Furthermore, by this historic agreement, both Etihad Airlines and Emirates Airlines are to immediately resume flight schedules into and out of Nigeria, without any further delay,” the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, revealed in a statement he signed Monday.

The statement is titled ‘President Tinubu secures landmark deal with United Arab Emirates across sectors; visa ban on Nigerian travellers is lifted immediately.’

Monday’s resolution followed talks between Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu and his Emirati counterpart, Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

It also comes nearly three weeks after the President expressed his willingness to personally intervene to end the nearly one-year ban.

“We are family with the UAE; we only live in separate rooms but in the same house. We should look at the issues as a family problem and resolve it amicably. As you know, in every family, there are peculiarities.

“You can have an erring son or daughter, but we must work together. We need to agree on core aviation and immigration issues,” Tinubu told the UAE Ambassador to Nigeria, Salem Saeed Al-Shamsi, at the State House on August 24, 2023.

It marked the first occasion in which Tinubu addressed the deadlock that led to the suspension of flights to Nigeria by Emirates, the UAE’s national carrier.

In October 2022, the UAE banned nationals of about 20 African countries from entering its borders.

“This is to inform you that we will not be posting 30 days visa applications for these nationalities effective today, October 18, 2022,” the notice partly read.

Affected countries include Uganda, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Cameroon, Nigeria, Liberia, Burundi, Republic of Guinea, Gambia, Togo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Senegal, Benin, Ivory Coast, Congo, Rwanda, Burkina Faso, Guinea Bissau, Comoros, and the Dominican Republic.

In a notice issued to trade partners, including travel agents, Emirati authorities demanded that all applications be rejected.

“Any applications from the above-mentioned countries will be sent back or cancelled,” said the notice. However, it does not affect persons holding diplomatic passports.

Since the ban, the UAE and Nigeria have been locked in a diplomatic row over issues involving flight allocations and travel restrictions.

In February, former President Muhammadu Buhari appealed to Al Nahyan via telephone to lift the visa ban. However, the UAE authorities rejected the request.

Explaining the recent development, the President’s spokesman noted that the immediate restoration of flight activity through Emirates and Etihad Airlines and between the two countries does not involve any immediate payment by the Nigerian government.

Ngelale said in recognition of Tinubu’s economic development and diplomacy drive and proposals presented to his counterpart, an agreed framework has been established.

The framework will involve “several billions of U.S. dollars’ worth of new investments into the Nigerian economy across multiple sectors, including defence, agriculture and others, by the investment arms of the Government of the United Arab Emirates,” the statement read in part.

Additionally, President Tinubu successfully negotiated a joint, new foreign exchange liquidity programme between the two Governments, which Ngelale said will be announced in detail in the coming weeks.

Tinubu commended the UAE President, Al Nahyan, for his unalloyed friendship and determined effort to join hands with him to fully normalise and reset the standard of relations between the two important countries to excellence.

The President, who ended his stopover in Abu Dhabi, is expected to return to Abuja immediately.

The United Arab Emirates, on Monday, lifted its months-long visa ban on Nigerians.

Nigerian Govt Receives New Suspension Request of British and Virgin
Air Peace has applied to operate the Lagos-London route, although approval from the UK Civil Aviation Authority (UK CAA) is pending to commence operations.

LAGOS- The Nigerian government has received a recommendation to initiate suspension procedures against British Airways (BA) and Virgin Atlantic Airways (VS) for their failure to comply with the reciprocity clause outlined in the Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

This suggestion was made by Mr. Stanley Olisa, the spokesperson for Air Peace, during the recently concluded Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Conference in Abuja.

Nigerian British Virgin Suspension
As per the BASA agreements between the two nations, there is a provision for reciprocity in flight operations along the designated route by airlines from both countries in accordance with the terms of the signed agreement.

He asserted that it was unjust and inappropriate for British Airways and Virgin Atlantic to be permitted to continue their flights into Nigeria without any Nigerian airline reciprocating such services.

Furthermore, he highlighted that Air Peace has demonstrated its capability to operate international routes, mentioning that the airline currently offers services to destinations like China, Israel, India, and South Africa, utilizing modern aircraft that are on par with those of foreign competitors

Falana Remarks
Falana firmly stated, “If Air Peace is not granted the opportunity to operate flights to London, then British Airways and Virgin Atlantic should also be prohibited from flying into Nigeria.”

British Airways and Virgin Atlantic Airways currently operate approximately 21 weekly flights to Nigeria.

British Airways serves 14 weekly flights to two Nigerian airports, namely Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) in Abuja.

Meanwhile, Virgin Atlantic Airways provides seven weekly flights from Heathrow Airport in London to Lagos.

Air Peace has applied to operate the Lagos-London route, although approval from the UK Civil Aviation Authority (UK CAA) is pending to commence operations.

Nigerian government has received a recommendation to initiate suspension procedures against British Airways and Virgin Atlantic Airways for their failure to comply with the reciprocity clause outlined in the Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo SAN has said government will relocate international airlines operating from the old Murtala Muhammed International Airport terminal to the new Chinese constructed termina from October 1, 2023 to give room for the complete maintenance of the old terminal.
This is just as he has directed, with immediate effect, the suspension of the Nigeria Air project, the concession project stressing that he owes it to the government and Nigerians to give honest assessment.

The minister equally revealed that to create space for the Apron it would do what it can to relocate existing Dominion and EAN hangars but that government would also do an emergency procurement to ensure buses are provided to transit international passengers to and from where the wide- body aircraft can park and disembark.

On the Nigeria Air and concession suspension, the Minister said, “ There were issues on ground before I came in. The issues of concession and all that, now I have suspended all of that including the issue of Nigeria Air. I have given a directive to suspend everything pending a review until I brief the President. The duty I owe Mr. President is honesty. I am looking at all the agreements and everything signed to correctly advise Mr. President. My loyalty is to the president and the Nigerian people.

Clarifying on the relocation of airlines to the new Chinese terminal, Keyamo said, the terminal was big enough and all airlines can relocate their counters there while the old international airport is shut.

According to him, the old terminal cannot be adequately fixed if they keep managing clusters of maintenance here and there and due to the fact that it is in use while those maintenance are carried out.

He said a serious overhaul would take place but it needs to be shut while facilitation relocates to the new terminal.

“And we have this old terminal that the Chinese built. Nigerians have been asking why the new terminal is not put into use. The simple reason is that I don’t know how this new terminal was designed. It has a provision to take big planes. I don’t know how it happened. I’ve been asking questions about how they would design an international gateway like the Lagos terminal without a provision to take the big planes; it doesn’t have the aviobridges that can link to the big planes. That has been the reason why we have not been using this new terminal and that’s why Nigerians have been asking that question.

He lamented that the airport accounts for 60% of the revenue generated and is left in disrepair.

“Meanwhile, 60 per cent of the revenue of FAAN comes from the Lagos Airport. The Lagos gateway is one of the major gateways into the country. So what is the solution to this? We have said we must use what we have for now. I’m giving the international and all the other airlines up to October 1 to move from the old terminal to the new terminal. What we are going to do temporarily is that we are going to shut down the old terminal and sort out all the issues regarding the renovation of the old terminal.”

He said the temporal plan is `to ensure passengers get the comfort of a better terminal and enjoy their experience.

“For now, the temporary arrangement we want to make and for the comfort of Nigerians we have to find a way to use the new terminal built by the Chinese even without the big planes coming in because there are no aviobridges for them to use and the gate bridges for the passengers to pass. So like it’s done in many other countries we are going to do emergency procurement to buy the big buses. So we are going to put them in buses and move them to where the big planes stop in an orderly fashion, both the arrival and departure so that Nigerians can have some sort of comfort with this new facility.”

JAPA: GERMANY’S IMMIGRATION LAW CREATES NEW JOB OPPORTUNITIES FOR NIGERIANS

The German parliament has passed an immigration law on Friday designed to encourage more people from outside the European Union, including Nigeria, to come to Germany for work.

According to Interior Minister of Social Democrats (SPD), Nancy Faeser, the draft law secures prosperity in Germany. “It would only work if the bureaucratic hurdles were dismantled during its implementation,” she said, like many European countries, Germany faces a shortage of skilled workers.

According to Report Monitored from Euro News, the reforms are to modernise the country’s immigration legislation expected to make it easier for third-country nationals to work in Germany. It could increase the number of non-EU workers in Germany by 60,000 per year.
