The hadith states, "Whoever fasts the months of Ramadan and then follows it with six days of fasting in the month of Shawwal, it will be as if he has fasted throughout the year. "

Fasting six days of Shawwal is Sunnah Mustahabbah, which means it is recommended but not obligatory. Some say that fasting in Shawwal is a way of demonstrating gratitude to Allah for the blessings, mercy, and reward that Ramadan has.
