That scientists can extract polar bear DNA, from just their footprints!?
Scientists extract environmental DNA by scraping snow from polar bear tracks. This way they gain valuable insights for conservation efforts. By examining the eDNA they were, for instance, able to figure out the bear's diet. How cool is that?!

The King of the Arctic🤩
Anyone who goes to Spitsbergen hopes to see a polar bear. We do our utmost to achieve this, but no guarantees...
Polar bears are wild animals that we don't want to disturb. If we have polar bears close by, we are on board the Noorderlicht. We don't want to encounter polar bears on land. That's too dangerous. You will notice that our guides always carry a riffle against polar bears. Never in the last 30 years have we had to use that weapon though☺️

Our experienced crew members take great joy in their work and love to teach our guests how to sail, while guiding us through the astonishing Arctic wilderness of Svalbard-Spitsbergen.
When we go on a shore-expedition, the Noorderlicht is usually anchored near where we will go ashore. The image of the magnificent Tall Ship at anchor in a beautiful bay is always a feast for the eyes.
We use the zodiac to go on shore. Sailing in the zodiac is an adventure in itself, it's a lot of fun when the zodiac moors against the ice or slides a bit on the snow plate or on the beach. With our zodiac we're able to reach the most stunning and remote spots!

Chapter 6 ~History of the Noorderlicht~
In 2003, there was a question about whether the ship could endure the freezing winter conditions in the thick ice of Spitsbergen. The ship underwent hull reinforcements to withstand ice pressure. Next to that accommodations for sled dogs were added and in February 2004, the Noorderlicht successfully stayed in the polar ice. In a Spitsbergen fjord, serving as a base for hotel guests and researchers during the polar winter for over 10 years...

Last time we told you about entrepreneurs Gert and Ted. They discovered the rusty Noorderlicht back in 1992. They've always dreamed of creating unique expeditions to very remote areas around the North Pole.
Almost 30 years ago, in 1994, their dream came true. During spring, the first sailing season in Spitsbergen started! As a poinier in this extraordinary and remote area there is much to see and do. There wasn't a market yet for adventurers to Spitsbergen, but their expeditions where fully booked. The Spitsbergen Adventure was a fact!

The hull of Wylde Swan started life as a 'herring hunter' in the 1920's, working off the Shetland Islands – a ship built for speed, ferrying the fresh catch from fishing grounds to the markets ashore. The Jemo, as she was originaly called, was originally built by HDW in Kiel. The ship was decommissioned sometime in the late 20th century and had changed ownership several times before Willem Slighting saw in her underwater ship the makings of a fast sailing ship. Her sleek underwater hull is now part of a rugged sailing ship, reminiscent of the large schooner yachts of the 1900 era. She was relaunched in June 2010 as world's largest two mast topsail schooner, with worldwide certification as a sail training vessel. Wylde Swan combines the majesty and tactics of the largest tall ships with the sailing characteristics and raw excitement normally only found on much smaller yachts. At sea Wylde Swan offers sail training and teambuilding to people of all ages. In port Wylde Swan transforms into a handsome location for corporate hospitality.
