Unity in diversity
There's lots of differences within these houses along this canal. Yet there's several unifying features making it harmonious.
They have a similar height, three to four floors with a horizontal rooftop. Similar width and three windows wide, and accentuated window frames.
Even if these houses are built in different time periods, they are clearly part of the canal district.

Walking down the Valley
This mixed-use building from MVRDV has a public rooftop. Accessible with this winding staircase, it has the effect of a river cutting through the mountain, forming a valley. On the leftover platforms, plants overgrow the facades.

A disappearing mural.
Eventually, the Hyperion Lyceum will be sandwiched between two towers. Self-portraits of three students, 15 meters high are made on the side wall of the future Brinktower. The mural represents an ode to the future and a memory of the past.

Cityloop had the privilege to guide a family from Colorado along the developments of IJburg. One of the children is aspiring to study architecture, hopefully this tour gave her the inspiration and push to do so.

Where's the building?
MVRDV wanted to make a non-building, although it must be above ground and more than 14.000 m2. So they hid it behind a complete mirrored façade, reflecting the skyline of Rotterdam.

What are they looking at?
This facade designed by Dok architects, is like a summer dress and still looks stunning in the rain! The north side here has small windows, whereas the south side is like hanging gardens. Have a look yourself during a private walk through Zuidas.

Daylight Presence
Light installations are gorgeous when illuminated, but how are they at day time? Here we see Pool of Dreams. These chrome balls of different sizes distort reality. They show you the here and now, but also the land of dreams or what is to come next. Even during day time, they are an intriguing addition to the Wertheimpark.

Did you know?
The building where Waiting... from Frank Foole will be attached to, is a former telephone exchange building. It was built in 1957, with a steel skeleton, made visible in the facade thanks to stone frames. A fitting sight for the installation of Foole, since the symbol represented in his work is most seen on our phones.
