Thank you for the great review, Debra! We're so happy to hear that you loved the tour and enjoyed a memorable afternoon with us!
Dutch walking food tours in Amsterdam with small groups off the beaten track led by local Dutch guides
(8)
Our experienced Dutch guides have lived and worked in Amsterdam for years and each has their own stories and experiences to share with you. So if you not only want to enjoy delicious tastings but also dive deeper into Amsterdam, its history, culture and community, this is the right tour to book. For us, a tour is not about walking around a place and pointing out things. Instead, we strive to make
you feel truly welcome in Amsterdam and have a great, interactive and fun day out with your guide and fellow guests. We respect the Amsterdam community of which we are a part and try to do this by, for example, keeping the groups small, avoiding the busiest places and times and working together with local food entrepreneurs with whom we have had a good relationship for years.
Thank you for the great review, Debra! We're so happy to hear that you loved the tour and enjoyed a memorable afternoon with us!

Apple pie is a true Dutch pastry, and despite the popular saying, “As American as an apple pie”, the recipe for apple pie can be found in the oldest known Dutch cookbook, dating back to 1514.
And now you can easily make your own delicious Dutch apple pie at home, using this unique recipe created by our dear friend and Michelin starred pastry chef Estefhan Meijer.
https://amsterdamfoodtours.com/amsterdam-tips/how-to-make-your-own-delicious-dutch-apple-pie-recipe
Estefhan created this recipe especially for Amsterdam Food Tours, combining elements of the rustic Dutch apple pie with an upscale look and taste befitting his fabulous patisserie.
Will you be making this pie? Let us know how it turns out!
One of the reasons we think our guides are the best in Amsterdam is that we often get together for inspiration and training.
Yesterday, art specialist Rudolph showed Thijs, Nanno, and Marjolein around the temporary Frans Hals exhibition at the Rijksmuseum. Painters like Van Gogh and Manet were hugely influenced by this 17th century Dutch master from Haarlem.
Would you also like a private tour of the Rijksmuseum? You can always combine our Rijksmuseum Private Tour with one of our food tours to make the most of your day in Amsterdam!

Our food tours are about much more than just the food. You also get to explore the architecture, history, and culture of Amsterdam. And since many of our tour guides have their own areas of expertise in addition to food, they each have fascinating stories to tell you about the city, as well as inter...
What’s the first thing you like to do when you visit a new city? For us, it’s definitely exploring the food scene!
Cafe ‘t Papeneiland is a great example of a so-called ‘bruin cafe’ or brown cafe, which is a typical type of Dutch pub.
The brown in the name refers to the use of wood and timber for the interior, which gives these pubs their ‘gezellige’ atmosphere. Usually, with these types of pubs, there is no music being played, so that you can easily have a conversation with your companions. And you will often find free or nearly free hard-boiled eggs at the bar.
One of the myths surrounding Cafe ‘t Papeneiland is that there’s a tunnel leading from the cafe under the Prinsengracht to a hidden church called the Posthoorn. The story has it that this tunnel provided an escape route for the Catholics from the church to the pub. It’s a made-up story, introduced decades ago by owner Opa Tiel, but many locals assume it to be a true story.
Cafe ‘t Papeneiland is also our home base, from which the Grand Dutch Food & History Tour starts. Here, we enjoy their iconic apple pie, for which even Bill Clinton paid them a visit.
Thank you for the great review, Niamh! We’re happy we could be part of your best day in Amsterdam and that we could share our knowledge of the city with you.
Want to try making your own tasty Dutch comfort food at home? Then we can highly recommend this hachee recipe from Daring Gourmet:
A traditional beef and onion stew from the Netherlands, this Hachee recipe has a wonderfully rich flavor profile everyone will love!
Happy Valentine’s Day! Are you looking for a lovely place to go for dinner in Amsterdam? Many restaurants require a reservation, but if you haven’t made one yet, there’s no need to stress!
Some restaurants in the city keep a large portion of tables available for walk-ins only. Here are our top recommendations for walk-in restaurant options on Valentine’s Day:
1 – Café Beurre Amsterdam
2 – The Seafood Bar
The Damrak location of The Seafood Bar is brand new in Amsterdam, and it’s situated in the former Stock Exchange, which was built by the famous Dutch architect Berlage in 1903.
And if you’d like to buy a beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers for your Valentine? Then we suggest visiting the flower auction in Aalsmeer (the largest flower auction in the world) or going to one of the various daily markets, such as the Albert Cuyp Markt, Dappermarkt, or Ten Kate Markt.
Do you want to try different styles of Dutch craft beer from small breweries? And do you also want to enjoy some of the delicious Dutch food that Amsterdam has to offer? Then you need to check out our Dutch Craft Beer and Food Private Tour!
On this tour, you will discover Dutch craft beer and food with a qualified beer sommelier. The tour can be easily adapted to your level of knowledge and interest and is a great choice if you are a beer lover, food lover, or both.
Your guide, who is also a beer sommelier, will take you to a local craft beer place, a cheese shop, and a restaurant where you will be able to enjoy a Dutch beer and food pairing. In between, you will also see some of Amsterdam and learn more about the city.
Since this is such a diverse tour that is also flexible according to your preferences, it’s a great option even if some of your companions are less interested in beer than you are!

The Dutch food culture is so rich and diverse that is simply impossible to serve it all to you on our food tours. But we can at least give you some tips on what else to try and where to find it in Amsterdam.
Today we're highlighting 'Limburgse Vlaai'. This pastry delicacy from the province of Limburg has recently been granted regional product name protection by the EU, meaning that it can only be called Limburgse Vlaai if it is made there. The round pastry is traditionally filled with rice or fruit, and like our Dutch apple pie, it is not a dessert, but a treat for any time of day.
Our tip for where to try ‘Limburgse Vlaai’ in Amsterdam is at Zoet & Hartig Haarlemmerdijk (https://www.facebook.com/zoetenhartigamsterdam/?locale=nl_NL), where the fresh ‘vlaaien’ are brought in directly from Limburg.
Did you know?
One of the many stories about why the houses in Amsterdam are so narrow is that it is a result of the old tax laws. It's often said that the amount of property tax you paid used to depend on the width of your house.
Another explanation could simply be that there wasn't much space in a rapidly growing city.
Are you going to Amsterdam with children? And are you looking for fun activities to keep them entertained? Then a visit to the Mouse Mansion is a must!
The Mouse Mansion is a family business, originally started by a mother who began writing books based on her own childhood. Now there is a whole series of books and they make their own displays out of waste materials. Many local Amsterdam children have read the Mouse Mansion books, and the original Mouse Mansion is on display in the city's public library.
The original location of the Mouse Mansion was in the Jordaan, but it can now be found in the city center.
Want to know more about the Mouse Mansion and the activities you can take part in? Visit their website:

Looking for an amazing steak restaurant in Amsterdam? Then we highly recommend you check out one of the following:
1 - Salmuera -
2 - Cannibale Royale
3 - Mr. Meat Steak & Burger .meat_amsterdam
In the city center, you’ll find many steakhouses that are aimed at tourists, and many of these aren’t so great. Instead, we’d suggest checking out the restaurants on this list, or to go looking in the surrounding neighborhoods, such as the Jordaan, Amsterdam Oud-Zuid, or Amsterdam West.

Visiting Amsterdam soon? We can highly recommend a visit to Wynand Fockink for a genever tasting!
Genever (or jenever in Dutch, from ‘jenever bes’ or juniper berry) is a traditional Dutch spirit, and it is from genever that English gin is derived. Wynand Fockink has been making genever since 1679, and their beautiful tasting room is located right next to Dam square. While they don’t have organized tastings, their tasting room and shop are open daily.
They also make many liqueurs, such as ‘Hansje in de kelder’ made with flavors like orange, cinnamon, and bergamot. The literal translation of this liqueur is ‘Little Hans in the Cellar’ and it was often served in a special silver glass to announce a pregnancy.
Have you tried genever? Let us know in the comments!

Are you familiar with the traditional way of drinking jenever? In this video, from a private tour with guests from the company MotherDuck, you can see how it’s supposed to be done. The special jenever glass must be filled to the top, so you have to sip from the glass without lifting it. In the old days, men wore hats and caps, and to keep them from falling off while they sipped, they held onto them. That's why, as a funny gesture, you can still see people holding their hands to their heads as they take their first sip of jenever. The combination of a beer and a jenever is called a ‘kopstootje’ (head bump), as it really kicks in. When you do a food tour with us, you can drink a ‘kopstootje’ at Cafe Nieuw Amsterdam to end the day. @cafenieuwamsterdam #jenever #amsterdam #amsterdamlife #kopstootje #foodtour
