Pão de Deus, translating to "God’s Bread’’, holds a special place in Portugal’s culinary tradition. Whether enjoyed as a breakfast indulgence or a delightful afternoon treat, the soft, pillowy rolls, coated with coconut and a sweet sugar glaze, are very popular among the Portuguese people.
Its origin can be traced back to conventual sweets and traditional recipes crafted by nuns and monks in Portuguese convents. These religious communities were known for their expertise in creating delectable treats, often using simple, yet quality ingredients.

While visiting Oviedo, in the lush green region of Astúrias in northern Spain, we had the opportunity to witness the artistry of cider production. Asturian cider, known as "sidra," holds a special place in the cultural and culinary heritage of Spain as it is deeply rooted in tradition and reflects the region's commitment to preserving its identity. We were able to see the iconic 'escanciado' – the pouring of cider from a height to introduce air to the drink – which added a touch of spectacle to this centuries-old tradition.
With the picturesque apple orchards as a background, we quite enjoyed tasting the different varieties of the fruit involved in the production of this regional drink that dates back to, at least, the 11th century.

If you find yourself in the beautiful city of Porto, don’t miss out on the stunning tile murals at the train station of São Bento. The tiles adorning the walls were created between 1905 and 1916, by the Portuguese artist Jorge Colaço. The vibrant azulejos tell a vivid and captivating story of Portugal's history, culture, and daily life. Murals of around 20,000 tiles depict scenes ranging from important historical events to rural landscapes and urban activities, providing a visual narrative that transports onlookers to different eras.

This last weekend we indulged in the robust flavours of pulpo a la feria - a Spanish delicacy that is a true celebration of the country’s gastronomic richness. Tender octopus, perfectly grilled and paired with a touch of olive oil, paprika, and a squeeze of lemon. Unforgettable evenings start with exceptional dishes, and pulpo a la feria, with its wonderful flavour profile, never fails to delight the taste buds. Cheers to savoring the beautiful Galícian cuisine!

Today we found ourselves sipping on this lovely red wine from Alentejo. The velvety blend made with four grape varieties - Shiraz, Trincadeira, Aragonez and Alicante Bouschet – shows notes of dark berries, oak and a hint of spice, creating a smooth and memorable tasting experience.
With a medium body and a fresh acidity, it pairs perfectly with meat dishes, which in the beautiful region of Alentejo, you will have no trouble finding. Prepare to be delighted with the rich Portuguese flavours of the southern lands.

During our Christmas break we decided to go back in time and explore the opulent Palácio Nacional de Queluz, in the town of Queluz, district of Lisbon. The palace, a true masterpiece of the 18th century Rococo style, dazzled us with its lavish interiors adorned with frescoes and entrancing chandeliers.
Before leaving, we went on a lovely stroll through the gardens of the palace where we found fountains, beautiful statues and hidden grottoes, all adding to the overall feeling of enchantment one can experience while there. Some even refer to the palace as the mini‘’Portuguese Versailles’’, due to all its detailed luxury, which we very much enjoyed observing.

Just outside of the city of Madrid, we find Alcalá de Henares – a charming historical town appointed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Birthplace to the brain behind Don Quijote - writer Miguel de Cervantes – Alcalá de Henares is known for its beautiful architecture, quaint plazas, its old university (dating back to the 16th century) and the impressive Cathedral of the Magistral.
Combining a vibrant culture with streets full of traditional tapas bars, this town is a great place to visit for art lovers as well as literary buffs all around.

As the coffee enthusiasts that we are, we found ourselves discovering Café Iruña, while strolling through the streets of Pamplona.
This iconic and historic coffeehouse was founded in 1888, and has always been a busy meeting spot for artists and writers. The beautiful antique furniture and the ornate Moorish inspired décor build a truly inviting atmosphere, reminiscent of an elegant and luxurious bygone era.
It is known for having been a special place for Ernest Hemmingway, who immortalized this legendary establishment in his novel ‘’The Sun Also Rises’’.

Today we tasted this lovely orange wine from the Douro region.
Hand in hand with the natural wine movement, orange wine is here to stay. The entrancing amber and copper hues it is known for, are due to the white grapes being fermented in contact with the skins, hence why it is also called skin contact wine.
Often made in clay vessels or wooden barrels, orange wine usually has a more sour taste to it with stronger tannins.
We quite enjoyed trying this Poças Fora da Série with notes of peach and orange peel refreshing our tastebuds.

Today we talk about Mencía , a red grape variety that is primarily grown in the northwestern part of Spain, mostly in the regions of Bierzo, Ribeira Sacra, and Valdeorras, as well as in the neighboring regions of Portugal.
This grape variety has been gaining more recognition during the last years for its quality and for the aromatic distinct wines it produces.
Mencía wines are known for their vibrant flavour profile of cherry and raspberry, accompanied by some floral and spicy notes. As is often the case, the terroir in which the grapes are grown has an undeniable influence on the wine, with the ones produced in the Bierzo region, having a more distinct mineral quality due to its schist soils.
With a balanced acidity level, wine produced from Mencía grapes, is very versatile regarding food pairings, being a great choice for grilled meat dishes, charcuterie and even some seafood dishes.

Cante Alentejano is recognized by UNESCO as an important cultural treasure of Portugal. Passed down through generations and generations, this style of polyphonic singing was born in the fields of Alentejo, where rural workers would sing about the countryside life, about love and longing. The singers, usually doted of deep and resonant voices, stand and take turns singing verses with the group responding in chorus.

The Basque Country in the north of Spain, is certainly one of the most exciting regions for foodies coming from all over the world.
Spending some time there recently we savoured this typical flavoursome dessert: Pantxineta. It consists of layers of puff pastry filled with the perfect texture of custard cream. It has its origins tracing back to the beginning of the 20 th century in the city of San Sebastián. During this time, the city was a popular spot for the Spanish royalty to spend their summer at, which led to many restaurants and patisseries, influenced by their neighbor France, to serve high cuisine.
When one of these patisseries – House of Otaegui – tried to make the traditional French frangipane tarts, by substituting some ingredients, they ended up creating, instead, the now well-known and highly appreciated dessert.
This perfect mix of milk, butter, sugar and eggs is served warm, and it is usually decorated with slivered almonds and icing sugar.

At we remain in festive mode, indulging in all our favourite Spanish and Portuguese products.
To accompany a comforting glass of good red wine we chose Quejo de Serpa – a creamy cheese from the Alentejo region that very much pleased our tastebuds.
Raw sheep’s milk is the base of its rich flavour. Being crafted with traditional techniques and aged with precision, its tangy undertones complete the strong aroma profile of this cheese.
