People forget sometimes that Joost van den Vondel, the Dutch playwright and poet who gave Vondelpark its name, was the child of religious refugees. He came here, like so many others, hoping for a place where he could live and follow his faith free of persecution.
So I hope that's something we remember, as we go through our Amsterdam lives, that this is a city that was built by many immigrants and refugees!

The statue Mama Baranka in Vondelpark in Amsterdam is a symbol of Antillean Resistance. It was erected in response to a 1983 murder of a 15-year-old Antillean boy named Kerwin Duinmeijer.
There are always some flowers surrounding the statue, showing the impact it has on the people who know why it's here.
