DESIGN MATTERS: Same Conditions, Different Outcome!

In our previous post dated the 11th of June, we shared our ClearPath Eccentric Reamer’s positive impact in conjunction with our RSS sleeve stab design on section deliverables. Today, we’re sharing a compelling follow-up example from a recent well within the same drilling campaign, underscoring how a simple but meticulously engineered change can significantly affect the drilling operation.

The shared image shows the difference between a conventional spiral design stabilizer and an EDP design RSS sleeve stabilizer as part of the same bottom hole assembly during the same run.

As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words . . .

The contrast between both items demonstrates the superior cuttings displacement and flow path the EDP design offers. A minor adjustment with a major impact, contributing to overall higher efficiencies by overcoming backreaming challenges and minimizing avoidable downtime. Such design features and benefits could prove even more critical when dealing with narrow-margin drilling applications.

CHOCOLATE OR VANILLA?
Unlike choosing between your favorite ice cream flavors, selecting a reamer is not a simple matter of personal taste or based on availability but rather an informed technical decision based on the specific application and challenges at hand.

Where your application might call for something more “engaging” with greater cutting action, an Active reamer might be more suitable. On the other hand, a Passive type reamer might prove more favorable if it prefers to minimize weight and energy interference to the bit while still having that extra security and reaming functionality in case of encountering pinch point(s) in the wellbore.

We are pleased to introduce Joel Vladimir Ulloa P., who is joining us at EDP as Latin America Business Development Manager - consultant.
Joel has 20 years of international experience working in Country Operations Management, Regional BD-Technical Sales Management, Global Commercial Director, and Engineering roles with Upstream Operating Companies as well as R&D organizations in India, the United Arab Emirates, the Middle East Region, Continental Europe, and Latin America.
He is a member of Mexico's second generation of businesspeople in the oil and gas sector, with a family history spanning more than 55 years in the industry. Additionally, he serves as the chairman of the Intervention and Coiled Tubing Association of Mexico.

A HYBRID STABILIZER WITH A "TWIST".
The Dome Hybrid Reamer enjoys all the features and benefits of a High-Performance Fixedblade Stabiliser.
This includes:
- Dome-shaped geometry blades
- Chamfered frames with no sharp edges
- Dual-row blade distribution
- Hydromechanic profile

Those design features offer the following benefits among others:
- Smoother interaction with the wellbore
- Minimum damage to the filtercake
- Superior stabilization and lower downhole vibration
- Optimised wellbore coverage
- Improved energy & weight transfer
- Enhanced displacement of fluid and cuttings across the tool

Additionally, the Dome Hybrid Reamer incorporates cutting elements in the form of a well-chosen combination of PDC cutters and TC buttons. Those are strategically positioned along a smooth and gradual 3-stage taper without intruding on the crown area.
This ensures the smooth interaction with the formation is maintained and a passive approach while drilling and resulting in little to no additional downhole drilling torque. The cutting elements come only into action when needed if encountering any hindrance either while drilling or POOH.

LOW TORQUE HYBRID CUTTING STRUCTURE!
The ClearPath Eccentric Reamer is a dual-stage wellbore conditioning tool.
The design adopts a progressive low-torque helical cutting structure that incrementally shears the formation.
Counter to the rotational direction of the tools, the PDC cutters on the initial blade extend a distance no greater than 50% of each additional cutter on the following blade.
This progressive helical cutting orientation ensures a 360°-degree cut with each rotation of the tool. The same is true for the second conditioning reamer blade set.

GO WITH THE FLOW!
Next to its superior reaming capability, the ClearPath Eccentric Reamer (CPR) ensures an optimal “open” flow path. The hydrodynamically positioned inner blades enhance the displacement of cuttings and fluid across the tool. The inner blades act as agitators with the unique geometry of the blade elements increasing the velocity of the drilling fluid. The pressure and turbulence created by the plurality of such alternating concentric blades are directed at the cuttings' segmented concentration, creating a scouring effect as the tool rotates.
