Founded in 2004, Maison Mona di Orio was created by the perfumer, Mona di Orio, and designer, Jeroen Oude Sogtoen, as a union of their mutual love of art and artisanal craftsmanship. Mona trained in classical perfumery for ten years alongside world-renowned perfumer Edmond Roudnitska. Influenced by light and nature, Mona sought to capture the quintessence of an ingredient. She constructed fragrances as a composer, playing on harmonies and melodies that develop with skin.

Vanille opens with a shot of rum flavoured with orange rind and spiced with cloves. amber and tonka further warm up this brew as ylang-ylang’s sweetness joins with rich vanilla. guaiac wood adds incensey smoke as woody notes from vetiver and sandalwood help to create an elegant finish.

But the real star of the show, not surprisingly, is vanilla. Instead of using ethyl vanillin, one of vanilla’s main components that can come across as powdery and sugary, Mona used pure vanilla in this elixir. For a moment – amid this elegant orchestral arrangement of notes in the key of vanilla – the pulpy, sensual creaminess of a split vanilla bean is right there in front of your nose. Delicious!

Lily of the Valley is a mute flower, it gives no useable quantities of oil, making it
especially difficult to portray accurately in a fragrance. However, Edmond Roudnitska took on the challenge and created a classic.

The Lily of the Valley flowers he originally used as an inspiration still grows at the Domaine Sainte Blanche.

Working on recreating mute flowers comes with its pros and cons. It requires the
perfumer to combine synthetics and naturals, hiding certain parts and pushing others.

Thankfully, it also gives the perfumer the opportunity to interpret it however they want.

Edmonds version is almost photorealistic, Fredrik’s creation for Domaine on the other hand comes with a rounder floral effect, built on a memory from one especially warm spring morning, on his way to work at Accords & Parfums.

Fredrik’s style of perfumery is deeply rooted in his love for nature and storytelling. It made sense choosing fragrance as his tool to tell these stories as his interest in everything scented has followed him from childhood. He has worked all over Europe in his search for new inspiration, olfactory knowledge, and a finding places where his romanticized idea of the world rings true.

He eventually ended up at Accord & Parfums in Cabris as a Junior Perfumer, this is also where he met Jeroen Oude Sogtoen. Six years have passed since then and Jeroen and Fredrik have been hard at work creating a new olfactory language together on the foundation of MMDO. The true luxury of emotion.

Art & Parfums, as Accords was originally called, opened its doors in 1946 by the now legendary perfumer Edmond Roudnitska. High in the mountains above Grasse, he built the Domaine Sainte Blanche, an enchanted garden overlooking Cannes and the Lérins islands in the distance.

This is also where Mona spent 15 years of her life as Edmond’s apprentice and where Fredrik took his first briefs as a junior perfumer.

Edmonds catalog of groundbreaking fragrances speaks for itself but there is one that is especially close to our hearts. Diorissimo by Dior!

Diorissimo was made in a more romantic age of perfumery. New olfactory molecules and scientific breakthroughs allowed perfumers to recreate previously impossible things. Continuously rewriting the rules of what a fragrance could be.
