Cheese & Tulips! And wine, croissants, jam, and mustard! This was our inaugural tulip field picnic, done for a private tour booking for a couple from Brazil. It was a big hit! Next year (2025 tulip season) we'll be adding a small-group picnic experience. It'll run in the afternoon. So, if you're heading to the Van Gogh museum in the morning you'll be able to dine amongst tulips in the early evening.

It's easy to flash peace signs when you're on a tulip tour.! Let's hope Bob and Megan brought the spirit home with them.

Before and after! These two photos were taken about two weeks apart in April of last year.

Can you spot the difference?... okay, yeah, apart from the two Swedish women in the second pic. Are you sure you can't spot the difference? It's a bit subtle in fairness!

It's January and not a flower in sight here in Amsterdam! They're all hunkering beneath the surface of the soil. However, our work begins now to promote our tours. We must have done something right last year as we ended up doing a tour for... Barack Obama!

(No, the photo is not via AI or photoshop!)

Anyway, we can't wait for April, tulips, hyacinths, and new friendly faces.

Cheers
Rory

Join one of our 8-person tours and visit a field of Dutch tulips! Some of our tours visit Keukenhof Gardens, others avoid it in favour of a backroads experience

Lekker! That's the Dutch word for delicious and it's a much used one in NL. This here is eight slices of the best home made Dutch apple there is. We won't reveal our supplier, but suffice it to say that a slice awaits you on one of our off-the-beaten-track tours.

Look at this beast! It's one of those evil machines that beheads the billion of tulips that grow in the Netherlands in April... Most people don't realise that the farmers are interested in the bulbs and not the flowers. Once the tulips are beheaded, they remain in the ground for another two months before being harvested. This allows the bulb (and not the flower) to absorb the energy of the sun and grow big and strong. Eventually the farmer will sell the bulbs to a grower and it will bloom a second time, this time in a greenhouse. And from there it will make its way to a florist where you might be it.

This happened on one our tours last year! It really is back-roads. It was quite adorable and we can't guarantee it will happen this year (in fact, we're fairly sure it won't!).

This photo was taken on April 16 of this year, and if you study it you can see that, even though season is quite short, that there is still quite a bit of range in there.

There are six rows of tulips in there. Three rows are approaching peak bloom - the rows on each side of the the frame, and the purples in the middle. Two will bloom later - the two rows to the left of the middle purples. And the row of green plants are baby tulip bulbs that didn't bloom at all this year, but will have just been planted a month or two ago again and will find their fully glory this coming April.

We love this photo! Not really hidden in the tulips, but kinda fun to think it so! This was taken last April (2022) and was so refreshing to welcome visitors again after that little spot of bother we had in the previous couple of years.

Look at this heartless man beheading all those ! Many who visit to see Dutch tulips in Spring assume that all those flowers make their way to florists. Not so. They're beheaded, and then the bulbs stay in the ground for another two months. Then the tulip farmers harvest the bulbs. What began the previous November as a baby bulb that was planted in harsh winter soil, is now a mature bulb which itstelf yields (usually) two baby bulbs.

The road this photo is taken on is the prettiest in the Netherlands, but only during tulips season! There are about 20 tulips farms on this winding, meandering road, each one owned by just one family. The houses (not pictured) are quite lovely too, and the overall effect is rather beautiful.
