You don’t hear about this amazing patisserie located in the southern part of the city everywhere—strange, because in our opinion, it’s one of the best in town. Maybe from the outside it doesn’t look like a classic French patisserie, but once you step inside—wow. It’s one of those places where you want to order one of everything, which is almost what happened.
We ordered an iced coffee, which was excellent, as well as a choux filled with vanilla cream and another one with vanilla and raspberry cream—a serious hit with the sweet-tart combo we love so much. We also got a crispy sablĂ© cookie filled with chocolate and caramel, a madeleine coated in raspberry chocolate, and to finish, a wonderful almond croissant, rich with almond paste and almond flakes.
After “dessert” 😉, we tried the savory pastries, which were just as good and proved that having savory after sweets is just as satisfying as the other way around. First was the cheese and ham croissant topped with black and white sesame seeds—solid 9.2. Next, a pastry with mozzarella, tomatoes, and spinach, an 8.7. Overall, a really great experience.
Why will we be back soon? Because besides their pastries and sweets, they also serve breakfast—omelets, breakfast croissants, granolas, and more. Definitely worth a visit.

The plan was – a few cocktails at Flying Dutch Men before a reservation for an Indonesian dinner, but we ended up being rookies who showed up without a reservation and found ourselves (and how lucky we were) at the other cocktail bar they opened at the same address, on the ground floor – . Now, why was this fun, you ask? Because down here, unlike the bar upstairs, there are also snacks and bites with the cocktails, and you know us, that’s always preferred and desirable :) The cocktails (unsurprisingly considering the owners are the same for both bars) were amazing! From the appearance of the glasses, the drinking experience, to the cocktails themselves, which were perfectly matched to the flavors we requested. And alongside, we didn’t go overboard this time and sampled two dishes – scallops with anchovy tempura with mango and white chocolate sauce – sounds so weird but wow! Sticky fried wings that were great – and overall it was so good that it made us want to return for an entire evening there.

Moving to the outskirts of the city has opened us up to discovering new places, and it’s really fun! I mean, it’s not like we didn’t find ourselves taking short trips to reach worthwhile spots when we lived in a more central location before, but this place is right under our noses now, and we love it and wanna share it with you guys! So, a short drive or a long bike ride away, and you’re at between Amsterdam and Abcoude. A cafĂ©-restaurant with the most rural atmosphere and a super relaxed vibe. We’ve been there several times already. Really, these are the places that make us fall in love with the Netherlands over and over again, even after seven years here. You’re a minute from the city but in a village atmosphere. Inside, there are shelves with regional produce – honey, jams, sauces, dried flowers, books about nature and plants. On the other side - farmer’s cheeses, milk, eggs. Everything is super fresh and local.
We specifically want to tell you about their High Tea experience, which is served entirely in vintage cups and plates, each one different and more beautiful than the one next to it, flowers in the center of the table, and a crochet tablecloth. We’re coffee people, so ironically, the name High Tea tempts us mainly because of the food that comes with the tea :) A round of savories (pastries and sandwiches), a round of sweets (cakes, scones, cookies, and pastries), good coffee and a relaxed vibe – a great way to start the weekend.

We don’t know too many people who don’t like Thai food; in fact, it’s one of our favorite cuisines. We do know a lot of people who haven’t found a Thai restaurant in the city that does the job. We’ve talked before and will probably talk again about Thaise Snackbar Bird, which we love and is actually the little sister of Thai Bird, which we like less, and also about the more modern Thai Thai Poppetje, which we must visit again soon. Now we want to tell you about a Thai place that we pass by every time on our food tour – “The Hidden Gems” – and we always recommend our guests visit it. First of all, the staff is an experienced team that knows what they’re doing and also the important aspect of hospitality. When you get there, you’ll probably meet the chef/owner who makes sure to go around all the tables to check in and say hello, even though this is not a Michelin establishment and doesn’t have the formality reserved for expensive chef restaurants, we see him every time we are there.
For us, it happens with a dish and a bite we don’t skip on any visit – Miang Kham, which actually translates to “one rolled bite,” which is actually – roasted coconut flakes, chopped shallots, chopped bird’s eye chili, ginger, garlic, dried shrimp, peanuts, and a palm sugar-based sauce rolled in wild pepper leaves. It’s a street food snack bought in Thailand in a bag to eat later – see the picture* – and in the restaurant, it is served plated, with the first bite of all this goodness assembled, rolled, and fed to you by the chef himself :) Besides that, curries, stir-fries, salads, soups, and everything you expect and hope for when you go to a Western Thai restaurant. Yes, yes, apart from the Miang Kham, you won’t find too many surprises. But sometimes you just want simple and good Thai food, and this is definitely one of those!

We discovered .amsterdam last year... I was searching for a place to celebrate our 7th wedding anniversary. You already know us - breakfast is our favorite meal, and when we find places whose menu isn’t just the typical ‘two eggs sunny-side up on toast’ or ‘omelet with herbs’ or ‘croissant with butter and jam,’ we jump at the chance, but also lower our expectations to avoid disappointment. So, imagine what happens when all of these connect to one big success. Breakfast - overlooking the Amstel River and the beautiful houses of Amsterdam - and amazing Eastern European (with a touch of Western) dishes! We’re in heaven! Blin Queen opened three years ago in the city center, a small family business that’s currently busy opening its second branch in the east of the city. Everything here is done just the way we like it - from the social media presence, through the menu design, to the choice of cups, plates, and the dishes they serve on those plates. In each of these aspects, you feel the precise choices made, all with meticulous attention to the smallest details. Now, let’s talk a bit about the food - after all, that’s the main thing. Blini (a thin Eastern European pancake) with gin-infused salmon, ricotta, cream cheese, and cucumbers, and also, a giant potato latke with poached eggs, avocado, and gravlax, and also, ‘cottage cheese pancakes - sounds like - what? Who? But listen - don’t ask for the bill before you tried them - they’re the main reason we keep coming back to Blin Queen again and again - thick cottage cheese oven baked pancakes served with
youghurt, cranberry powder, home-made, raspberry & thyme jam or blackcurrant & lime jam. - an amazing dish! Since our last visit, they’ve already added an evening menu that we’re dying to check out, giving us an excuse (that we didn’t really need) to come back again :)

Totally forgot to write about our experience at from a few weeks ago, so here it is! Hakata Senpachi, a Yakitori restaurant that had been on our list for quite some time, and finally, we managed to go there. The restaurant has been around for 20 years and consistently maintains a high standard (we checked with friends we trust who visited there many years ago 😅). We arrived hungry (as usual đŸ€Ș) and chose to sit by the grill to stimulate our appetites even more. The combination of the smell of the grilled skewers together with hunger almost made us order the entire menu 🙈, which was a smart decision because every bite was - WOW! It was so much fun to receive more and more tasty surprises at the table. We left full and satisfied, and next time, we’ll come back with friends too 🙃

Madame Jeanette is a yellow pepper, looks like a tiny bell pepper, very spicy, originating from Suriname! It’s okay if this is the first time you’ve heard of Suriname - you’re not alone :) However, it would be a shame to come all the way to Amsterdam and miss out on it - both the pepper and Surinamese cuisine. During our food tours in and around the market we talk about where Suriname is located, who the Surinamese people are, what the traditional foods are, and how a dish of Portuguese and Sephardic Jews became the most popular dish there. There, among all the flavors, Madame Jeanette will also appear as a key ingredient in an amazing Sambal (spicy sauce), which is spicy, sweet, sour, and salty - impossible to remain indifferent to. Our guests on the tours fall in love with it in seconds 🙂

Once again, we’re back, putting on our breakfast and brunch enthusiast hats, ready to tell you about another spot that does a great job when it comes to morning carbs - .french.cafe . This cafĂ©/bistro has two branches in Amsterdam - one in the east and one in the west - and another branch soon to open in Utrecht.
In the morning, Le French Café serves up a tasty array of pastries, eggs, sandwiches, and salads. And in the evening, they offer a variety of appetizers and small dishes, along with hearty bistro-style meals like fish, seafood, steaks, and more.
What we appreciate about Le French Café, along with their good food, is their solid style and good service.

If there’s anything we love more than preparing stuffed dishes of all shapes and varieties - vine leaves, cabbage, onions, courgettes, peppers - you name it, it’s when someone makes them for us and all we have to do is eat! We’re not sure if we’re ready to share the secret of this cozy little place just yet, where surprisingly, every day they make handmade Dolma - stuffed vine leaves. But if you know how to keep a secret... write to us, and maybe we’ll share it with you.

We told you once, but we’ll say it again: While Amsterdam may be the capital of the Netherlands, there are some excellent spots here to grab empanadas. We really love those from , a tiny shop in Jordaan owned by Sandro and Deby (both married and business partners - sounds familiar, doesn’t it? 🙂). Anyway, whenever we’re there, we always enjoy a mix of authentic fillings and some surprising combinations, love it!
