We always tell our food tour guests how integral Indonesian cuisine is to the culinary scene here in the Netherlands, and we recommend that they donât miss out on an evening at one of the Indonesian restaurants in the city. And when they do go, itâs clear they should experience the full Rice Table (Rijsttafel).
The Rice Table is a very special meal that you can find at every Indonesian restaurant in the Netherlands. In the center of the table, youâll get white rice and fried rice, surrounded by many small plates of flavors and dishes to eat with the rice - chicken and goat skewers, meat and vegetable stews, tofu, shrimp. Fried, steamed, baked, cooked - you name it! The origins of this meal date back to the 17th century when the Dutch ruled Indonesia. When important guests visited, they would set a table with all the best Indonesia had to offer - mainly to show off ingredients and spices that were not available in Europe at that time. When this period of rule ended and the Dutch returned to the Netherlands, the tradition of the Indonesian feast table carried over to the Indonesian restaurants here, so in every Indonesian restaurant, you can experience the Rice Table.
This time, we visited one of the most established Indonesian restaurants in the city - @sampurna.amsterdam , located right in the center. We dove into two hours of Indonesian experience from one end of the table to the other on a rainy day. It was diverse, surprising, and delicious! Some dishes stood out above the rest like the Pangsit Goreng, a fried pastry filled with chicken with a tomato and chili dip on the side that was excellent! Sate Kambing, goat meat skewers in soy sauce. Lumpia Ikan, a spring roll filled with spicy fish, peanut sauce, and chili. Asinan Laut, a salad of shrimp, mango, and papaya, fresh and light.
We finished with a drink that is essentially a dessert - Cendol, a cold Indonesian drink based on coconut milk, palm sugar syrup, and pandan-flavored tapioca jelly, which conclu
Weâve been following @panzeroitalianstreatfood in Rotterdam for quite some time and let me tell you it was worth the wait. No pizza, no pasta but great Italian street food from Puglia!
Think about - Bruschettas, aubergine lasagna, fried dough filled with burrata grilled octopus and artichoke and Southern Italian sandwiches! These guys are serious in what they do, and we love it!
Visited @thenewnewgoldenhouse (or The new new restaurant) for a night full of cocktails and surprisingly nice dishesâ short ribs bao buns with egg yolk sauce easily winning best bite of the evening. But we also had homemade dumplings, orange chicken, pork belly and sweet and savory noodles with pork and although the design is to the point, the food and cocktails were great the service wasnât - our cocktails were last to arrive after we got everything we already ordered. Apologies? No way. Smiles? no no⊠Hopefully they will soon understand that owning a restaurant goes hand-in-hand with being great hosts, and not only preparing wonderful dishes. But we will definitely go again for everything we didnât have room to try but wanted to order on our first visit and weâll keep you posted â€ïž
