They think it’s pretty special that Merlijn offers their bikes to cycling enthusiasts. We already knew Jan Janssen wasn’t a large company – which we love – but we were still surprised to find that their ‘factory’ is actually a small warehouse with just 8 employees.

The final step in planning a new route is turning all the collected information into a detailed plan 📖

This includes a clear travel description, complete with stunning photos and valuable information to help our guests prepare for the journey 🚴‍♂️

Merlijn prides itself on thorough preparation. Every detail is carefully crafted to ensure that the new Vienna–Budapest route, launching in 2026, will be executed with confidence and expertise. This is how we transform an idea into an unforgettable adventure!

It’s a Bike & Barge Cruise, so the cycling part is just as important as the nautical plan! A member of our tour leader team will soon travel to the region to personally explore and map out all the cycling routes ✨

After extensive digital preparation, the routes will be examined in detail, on two wheels. Everything needs to be perfect, as this tour leader will soon guide 24 guests along these routes, leaving little room for improvisation.

Sometimes things don’t go as planned! During our exploration, one of the mooring spots Coen thought could be used turned out to be unsuitable. That means going back to the drawing board and adjusting the plan.

This is all part of the process – everything must be perfect before the route goes live. After all, a solid plan is the foundation of a great trip!

Exploring the route – inspecting the surroundings

This is the most exciting part for the planners: traveling to the area of the new route and inspecting each destination locally! This phase has just been completed. It may look like a vacation, but a lot of hours were invested to make it as perfect as possible 😉

By car, Coen and Cristina visited all the locations listed in the nautical plan and even explored additional spots as potential alternatives. The main goal? Establishing contact with the managers of mooring locations and harbors. Unfortunately, there’s often little information available online, especially about those small, hidden gems that are ideal for a ship like Merlijn ✨

They also visited tourist information centers, took photos, and explored possible excursions that could be offered during the trip.

After the idea comes the nautical plan. What is possible with the Merlijn? That’s where most of it depends, although we also need to keep the cycling routes in mind from the very start. Over the past two years, Coen has already made numerous notes to draft the nautical itinerary.

Unfortunately, we cannot share all the details yet, but imagine a fairly basic travel description, including a daily “from & to” itinerary and an idea of the starting and ending points for the cycling trips.

A new route always starts with an idea; what if? Wouldn’t it be amazing if? We want our guests to experience …!

Improving an existing route is something we work on year-round. Even this is a time-consuming task with so many different routes that Merlijn offers. Many leave this kind of work untouched, but at Merlijn, we believe the thought “it’s fine as it is” is a dangerous one.

But this time, we’re talking about an entirely new adventure! We’re starting with a blank sheet of paper. Because it can only become a true Merlijn adventure if we fill that paper ourselves 📃

The idea first came to Coen & Cristina when they had just acquired Merlijn:
What if we take Merlijn to the Danube? Wouldn’t it be amazing if we could cycle and sail all the way to Budapest? We want our guests to experience Eastern Europe!

And so, a new dream was born—one ready to take shape as the next great Merlijn adventure.
