🌟 BREAKING NEWS: Carbyon, our incredible alumni, has just unveiled a groundbreaking achievement in the field of Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology!

⚡"Carbyon is the first Direct Air Capture company to merge low CAPEX with low energy demand, thanks to their unique fast-swing process."

🌬️ Their unique fast-swing process has now proven its ability to capture CO2 using less than 2,500 kWh/ton, marking a significant milestone towards cost-effective DAC solutions below $100/ton.

🔍 Carbyon's pursuit of a low-cost DAC solution led to the invention of an ultra-fast CO2 capturing material, capturing up to 5 tons of CO2 annually in just a few minutes per kilogram of material. This allows for compact DAC machine designs, resulting in a CAPEX cost below $50/ton.

🌍 As COP28 begins in Dubai, these breakthroughs highlight DAC's maturation as a pivotal technology in meeting climate targets. Removing vast amounts of CO2 from the atmosphere is essential for limiting global warming, and Carbyon's advancements are paving the way forward.

🔬 Carbyon's breakthrough not only drives fundamental understanding but also fuels their mission to further reduce energy demands. Currently, they're developing their first engineering-scale machine, set to be validated in the field alongside pilot partners.

📈 Having raised $10M, Carbyon is now in the midst of a Series A round to fuel their upcoming activities.

In "How A Dutch Venture Builder Is Accelerating European Deep Tech," reporter Jennifer Schenker touches on all our accomplishments, from making data centers more sustainable to tackling the long and risky process of building 52 deep-tech ventures.

Schenker focuses like a laser on how Incooling's young took CERN cooling technology and adapted it as a revolutionary step forward in more efficiently cooling data centers.

And she notes the award-winning collaboration between Incooling and ASML, Europe's most valuable tech company, where Incooling's approach currently is being tested.

Venture builder HighTechXL is accelerating Europe's Deep Tech sector by pairing research organizations, large corporates and entrepreneurs.

The good news just keeps on coming! Congratulations to deep-tech venture Astrape Networks on securing €1.6 million in pre-seed funding!

Astrape announced it secured pre-seed funding from a consortium of investors and loan providers, including BOM - Brabantse Ontwikkelings Maatschappij, Rabobank, Brabant Startup Fonds, TTT Smart Industries, SHIFT Invest and PhotonDelta.

With the capital, Astrape can begin developing the technology needed to drive the data centers and optical networks of the future, specifically the use of Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs), to build faster, cooler and more energy efficient data centers.

Data centers have a hard time keeping pace with ever-increasing consumer demand for data – more than 5 billion Internet users in 2023. Existing data networks convert electronic signals into optical signals and back again, multiple times. Switching between electrical and optical signals consumes large amounts of energy.

Astrape’s goal is to eliminate multiple electrical-optical conversions by only converting to optical at the network edge. At current network speeds, that would generate an estimated energy savings of 20%. Based on anticipated future speeds, that could rise to as much as 60%.

“This investment is an important endorsement for the photonics venture building program set up by HighTechXL and PhotonDelta,” said Laurens Weers, Chief Financial Officer at PhotonDelta. “The joint program enables startups working with integrated photonics – such as Astrape Networks – to get off the ground, create new use-cases for the technology and strengthen the Netherlands’ position as a world leader in integrated photonics.”

📣 We have amazing news to share … at last! HealthTechXL, our new venture building program for healthcare and MedTech startups, officially launched in early September with 50 participants. Our partners in this exciting journey include Philips Benelux, BOM - Brabantse Ontwikkelings Maatschappij, DeepTechXL and Invest-NL.

With this new program and the laser focus of committed partners, startups leveraging advanced medical technology get an extra boost.

HighTechXL and BOM will lead teams through the HealthTechXL program, developing business cases from concept to the “investor-ready” level.

HealthTechXL teams will pitch their proposals to investors, potential partners, the Brainport startup community and our global ecosystem.

Successfully participating in HealthTechXL could potentially lead to an investment by BOM and further investment from DeepTechXL and Invest-NL's Deep Tech Fund.

Our mission? To successfully launch and secure investment for 15 healthcare and MedTech startups over the next three years.

Congratulations to ecosystem ally DeepTechXL on their €1.3M investment in SandGrain!

SandGrain, an Eindhoven-based startup, addresses the industrial Internet of Things, providing a combination of unique hard-coding of Integrated Circuits and a centralized cloud platform that guarantees and manages the IoT node identities.

DeepTechXL launched the €100M DeepTechXL Fund I in 2022 with partners ASML, Philips, BOM - Brabantse Ontwikkelings Maatschappij, TNO, Oost NL - Ontwikkelingsmaatschappij Oost-Nederland NV, PME pensioenfonds and several family offices.

“We are excited to invest in SandGrain because we see great potential in their disruptive approach to enhancing security in the fast growing industrial ‘Internet of Things’ applications. Deep Tech Connect: A Deep Tech Innovation Forum, presented by HighTechXL and Extreme Tech Challenge, is coming up next week, June 28th, at High Tech Campus Eindhoven.

There’s never been an event quite like Deep Tech Connect. We have lined up a veritable who’s who in the deep tech world, including keynotes by Peter Wennink, President & CEO ASML, and Nicolas Autret, Walden Catalyst Ventures.

inPhocal Alumni Success Story: Light without limits

Today we continue our Alumni Success Story series featuring deep-tech venture inPhocal, who completed our program in 2020. It was kismet when the three cofounders – CEO Robert van Tankeren, CTO Martijn Boerkamp and CFO Kathy Vredeveldt – came together. Their complementary skills of technology, business and finance are the magic mix the company needs to scale quickly. The team has developed a unique laser beam with a long focus capable of printing on curved surfaces, something unheard of in the industry and considered a bit “magical,” according to Martijn. For the past couple of years, the team has been focused, well, like a laser on the marking industry for food and beverages and is rolling out machines in several production lines on three continents. inPhocal is accelerating the transition from industrial inkjet printing to laser marking, helping industries achieve sustainability goals. HighTechXL is a deep-tech venture-building program that builds teams of entrepreneurs and tech talents around the most advanced technology in the world … technology from CERN, European Space Agency, TNO, Philips and other global innovators.
