New chairs added to the pilot-bunker!
The Conscious Chair by Mater Design. Originally designed in 1958 by renowned Danish furniture designers and architects Børge Mogensen and Esben Klint, this chair is made from FSC-certified oak and an innovative circular material called Matek®, which in this case is derived from coffee waste.

Given that our bunker is filled with (local) oak-wood and plenty of coffee is enjoyed here, we found the Conscious Chair to be the perfect match. Now, you can enjoy your coffee while sitting in these chairs, knowing that waste can truly have a second life.

We are very thankful to Mater Design for sponsoring us once again, just as they did in 2021 when we had the chance to obtain the Ocean collection for our terrace. We are proud to present such beautiful examples of sustainable and circular design to our guests.

This week we welcomed 60 participants of the 'VerhalenWandeling', organised by the Wijkcollectie. Since we are fully booked this was a bit of a challenge. But thanks to our very hospitable guests we were able to share the story behind Cocondo, and in particular the story of the people of Hoek van Holland that lived in bunkers after the Second World War. A big thanks to our guests and the Wijkcollectie for making this possible!

A call for support.

Something devastating happened in Rotterdam. This week the city's beloved creative hub the Keilewerf completely burned down, together with the (life's) work of 40 designers, artists and sustainable company's. Three among them contributed to the pilot of Cocondo and we feel a strong need to support them.

Please read our special newsletter on how you can help Buurman Rotterdam, Thijs Brandsma, Tijmen Kattevilder and all the other struck creatives.

Currently at Art Rotterdam, the work of Anne Geene, including the work she created during the Artist in Residence at Cocondo. During Anne's stay she collected shells from the beach with a very distinctive hole drilled in to them. Perhaps you noticed these on the beach yourself once?

The holes have been created by the necklace shell (Euspira catena), or in Dutch 'tepelhoren'. This sea snail hunts buried molluscs and uses its tongue (that has very tiny teeth) to drill small holes in to the shell of its pray, so it can slowly suck it out. This proces can last up to 60 hours(!).

After Art Rotterdam the work will be framed and displayed in our bunker in Hoek van Holland

Anne's work is represented by Galerie Caroline O’Breen and can still be seen this weekend at the Van Nelle Fabriek.

It's time to introduce our annual Artist in Residence! This year we have the absolute pleasure in working together with Dutch visual artist Anne Geene (1983), who has been on our wish list for or a long time...

Anne is known for capturing hidden patterns, beauty and humor in flora and fauna. From collecting countless strings of grass or gradients of autumn leaves, to measuring birds and the velocity of their fallen p**p.

During the residency Anne will use Cocondo as a workspace, enabling her to explore the area, learn about the history and discover what the surrounding nature has to offer. As a result Anne will leave behind an artwork that can be seen for our future guests. Following in the footsteps of Luuk Smits, who was last years artist.

The Artist in Residence program is repeated every January, creating a growing artwork collection that give our guests different perspectives on the bunker and surrounding area. The program is curated and funded by Stichting Stelling 33 .

We had a very special guest this weekend.
The mayor of Gemeente Rotterdam, Ahmed Aboutaleb and his officials payed a visit to our bunker in Hoek van Holland. This was during his annual bicycle tour through the town. The program was quite intens with lots to see, so after some stretching with our tree: off he went to the next project.

A special thanks to our guests who were so kind to let the mayor in during their stay.

Tonight Cocondo is featured in the television program 'Langs de Kust', made by Omroep MAX . Actor Huub Stapel and writer Martin Hendriksma pay a visit to our bunker and share the story of Dutch people who lived in German bunkers after the war. For this occasion Ria, Elly and Janny, all three born in bunkers in 'het Roomse Duin', came to Cocondo with their old photo albums to show how these times we're hard but also adventures.

The program was recorded in June 2021 and will now be aired for the first time at 20:45 at NPO2. Exciting!

The pilotbunker had an upgrade. Two photographs that inspired us to start Cocondo have found a place on the walls. One photograph (by fotopersbureau de Boer) shows a woman sunbathing in 'de Kennemerduinen' at IJmuiden in 1969 and is provided by the Noord-Hollands Archief. The other photograph (by Henk Blansjaar) shows the use of bunkers at 'Park Kostverloren' in 1947 in Zandvoort and is provided by Spaarnestad Photo. This bunker is still in use as a holiday home today.

A big thanks goes out to Zwaan Fotografie & Presentatie who sponsored the beautiful printing and framing!

During World War Two our pilotbunker was used for just two years. After the war, over a period of more than 75 years, five generations found other ways to use the bunker. People from all ages found adventure here by making fires, leaving graffiti, recording scary video's, playing war games or using the bunker as the perfect hiding place for a treasure hunt. Like in this recently discovered picture from 1989, where one of the founders of Cocondo, Peter de Krom, is celebrating his 8th birthday (and holding the flashlight).
Fun fact: the boy who found the treasure: Martijn, became one of the first guests in 2021 to stay in the bunker with his own family.

We value the history of the bunker from- and after the war equally. And that's why we left a 'storyline' untouched across the wall of the living room. If you look close enough, you can find traces that are just 1 or 79 years old.

All of the wood used in the pilotbunker comes from two local oak trees. One of them came from Landgoed De Tempel and was 75 years old before it was struck down by a storm. Today we installed the foot of this tree on the terrace, which can now be used as a small table.

Fun fact: The tree sprouted around the same time the bunker was build and fell down in 2017 when we made the first plans for renovating it!

The pilot of the Cocondo Artist in Residence was a succes! Artist Luuk Smits stayed in our bunker for two weeks and explored the surroundings and history of the bunker. It was during a time of heavy storms that brought a lot of materials on to the beach. Luuk went 'beachcombing' and researched two materials that derived from ships: driftwood and paraffin.

Luuk experimented with both materials and chose the driftwood for his final work, turning it in to a temporary and fragile installation. He photographed the installation and framed the photograph in multiplex. Its is now on display in the bunker for all our guests to see. Making it the first artwork of a collection that will grow every year with each residency.

About the paraffin.
This is a substance derived from oil which is used to make candles. It is shipped in liquid form but also ends up in the water when the storage containers are cleaned. Paraffin is very toxic to animals who can mistake the smaller parts for food. It is a big problem since the Netherlands is one of the biggest exporters and importers of paraffin in the world. Costs to clean up beaches is estimated around 148.000 euro's every year.

Thanks to the work by Luuk we became even more aware of the man made type of materials that ends up in the sea on a daily basis.

New project!
The coming two weeks Dutch visual artist Luuk Smits is testing Cocondo as an Artist is Residence. Luuk will use his time in the bunker to explore the area, learn about the history and collect objects. As a result Luuk will leave an artwork behind that can be seen in the bunker for future guests. It is a program we plan to repeat every January. Creating an always changing artwork collection that reflects on the bunker and surrounding area.

The Artist in Residence program is curated by Cocondo and funded by the Erfgoedlijn Atlantikwall of the Provincie Zuid Holland.

Cocondo: A place to stay

Stay within history and dive under nature.

Cocondo gives a new life to old bunkers along the Dutch coast. We do this in order to preserve cultural and historical heritage, to tell the stories behind it and to protect the surrounding nature. We transform the bunkers in a sustainable and ecological way into meaningful places to stay. Each redevelopment is tailored to the bunker, nature and user.

Have a sustainable seaside vacation

Along the Dutch coast thousands of bunkers are hidden in the dunes. These defence works, once considered invincible, are now dilapidated and abandoned. By giving these existing buildings a new purpose, we offer a sustainable and camouflaged alternative for coastal construction.
