AviaVox

AviaVox AviaVox develops Intelligent Automatic Announcement Systems for Airlines and Airports. AviaVox continuously adds new languages to their systems.

Ever since we started in 1995 we have worked closely with airports of all sizes, making us a global expert in our field. We use the day-to-day experiences of our customers to continuously improve the functionality of our system. Because of our thorough knowledge of the operations at airlines and airports, many countries have standardized to the AviaVox System as it significantly increases passenge

r flows and customer experience. Basically, there are no limitations to the number that AviaVox can build in their systems, although it needs to be said that the driver for making new languages are the requirements at an airport or airline. Amongst the many languages that AviaVox can support, one will find for instance:

British-English, French, German, Dutch, Flemish, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Greek, Polish, Russian, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, Egyptian Arabic, Modern Standard Arabic, Hindi, Mahrati, Mandarin, Japanese, Korean. Any other language can be added.

-MEET THE TEAM -
It's time to introduce our next team member, probably a familiar face to many: Johan Godin. Johan is our managing director and the co-founder of AviaVox. The company was founded formally on July 3rd 2003; however, we have been developing our software since 1995. Johan says: "In our 28 years of experience, we’ve seen our company grow from a few clients in Western Europe to over 50 clients worldwide. We can proudly say that today you can hear our announcements in many different languages all over the world, and we’re working hard to keep expanding. Over the years we’ve seen a big move towards automatization which we’re happy to accommodate."

Johan's role in the company is diverse and that's why he loves his job: "This is probably the most fulfilling job I’ve ever had, for it combines many different social cultural aspects that make every project unique. It not only enriches me as a person, but it broadens my world view."

"I am proud of our professional team of highly motivated colleagues that make the company to what it stands for today: quality, knowledge, experience, expertise, excellent support, innovative solutions and much more. Together we prioritise our world-wide customers satisfaction and intend to remain doing so for many years to come."

Privately, Johan is married and has two adult daughters and three grandchildren. He is also a passionate musician and plays piano (classic), guitar (blues, jazz, and rock) and ukulele (roaring twenties).

"I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, with a mix of joy, happiness, prosperity, peace and above all a good health in 2023 and beyond."

We are full of delight to see so much growth happening and would like to highlight our loyal and new clients in Egypt and India. Happy holidays to you all!

Now airports & airlines can make passenger announcements in places not linked to their central PA system – like remote check-ins & shuttle buses. With FlexiVox, you can deliver any kind of announcement wherever your passengers need to hear it. It’s so flexible that it can connect to virtually anywhere. If you thought off-site announcements would be too expensive to consider, consider FlexiVox.

Passenger stress is reduced – and their compliance improves – when they get up-to-date information ahead of time. You could deliver live flight updates, health & safety announcements, advertisements, warnings, and more. All in 35+ languages, and at places like remote check-in locations, airport apron shuttle buses, or on the transport between parking lots and the terminal. Amazing flexibility means there are countless applications.

• Annoucements can be canned or dynamic, and in all common audio formats
• Works in almost any technical set-up, including legacy PA architectures
• Pronunciation and grammar are guaranteed error-free
• Highly secure
• Cloud-based server is remotely administrated and always up to date

From the smallest airports to the likes of London Heathrow and Amsterdam Schiphol, AviaVox helps to improve passenger flow, compliance, and even revenue. Our automated passenger announcements deliver the latest information to the right people, in the right zone, at the right time – helping to keep everything running smoothly. And because you can be that focused, AviaVox is the support you need to implement a ‘silent airport’ policy.

With no manual input, any airport can deliver passenger announcements in over 35 languages and dialects, using your existing PA infrastructure. Clearly, efficiently, and cost-effectively. And since AviaVox systems also integrate easily with your AODB, passengers always have the most up-to-date information about boarding, safety, security, delays and cancellations.

So whether you’re accustomed to handling 100,000 or 100 million passengers a year, find out how AviaVox could enhance your airport operations.

Meet the Team - The next team member we are proud to present is Daniël van der Lei. Daniël has been with us for 18 years and has held several different positions at AviaVox, from Audio Software Engineer and Project Manager to his current position as R&D and IT manager. As our jack of all trades, Daniël says that he feels passionate about solving complicated puzzles together with the team. A perfect mindset to be a driving force behind our technical development, creating new products and features.

Daniël has a bachelor’s degree in Art and Technology, with a specialization in Audio Design at the HKU University of the Arts Utrecht, and a master’s degree in European Media.

We can’t mention Daniël without including our colleague Merijn Bosma. Daniël and Merijn met over 25 years ago through the music world and have been friends ever since. We even have to thank Merijn for Daniël joining the company. Daniël started at our direct predecessor, the company Master Audio Product, which created the first announcement system for Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

After reading all that, it shouldn’t be a surprise that Daniël is also musically quite talented. In his private life he enjoys playing piano and (bass) guitar.

The AviaVox Announcement System reaches passengers all over the world in more than 35 languages. In this map you can see the variety of European languages we support.
For announcement you’ll notice a lot of similar looking words: the French 'annonce', the Italian 'annuncio', the Norwegian 'annonsering' and the Turkish 'anons'. The similarity, interestingly, does not necessarily mean that these languages are closely related.
French and Italian are indeed, as they belong to the Romance languages, a language branch of the Indo-European language family. Norwegian is also a part of this family, but belongs to another branch, being a Germanic language. Turkish does not even belong to this language family, making it very probable that 'anons' is a loan word.

MEET THE TEAM
Yunnan Welkers-Godin completed a bachelor’s degree in Art History at the Utrecht University and a master’s degree in Islam in the Modern World at the University of Amsterdam. Due to her professional interest in different languages and cultures, she started working at AviaVox and has been actively involved in various projects at different departments within the company.
For Yunnan, the international focus of the company is one of the most appealing aspects of her work. “I enjoy working with people who have different backgrounds both in skills and private backgrounds as this often provides new and refreshing insights on different types of topics.”
Yunnan initially started within the Content Department, contributing to the development of the languages in operation today at airports all over the world. After several years, her talent to work with different cultures expanded further and she started to participate in exhibitions, conferences and maintaining customer relations worldwide. The last couple of years, her work focus gradually shifted towards the sales department.
More recently, knowing both the company and the aviation market inside out, Yunnan shifted to a more consulting position overseeing the challenges of the different departments.
In her private life Yunnan is a mother of three children and lives with her husband in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

At AviaVox we try to beat the demand by our supply. For our clients we regularly check new and altered airline names and destinations, to make sure we can keep our announcements up to date.

For our destinations, we see new airports being built as well as new destinations added in the flight schedule of our clients. These destinations might have different names in different languages and for us it is of vital importance that all destinations are announced with complete clarity. It doesn’t matter if you are travelling to London, Londra, Λονδίνο, ಲಂಡನ್ or 伦敦, we will bring the message across.

For our airlines, we see that they sometimes go defunct or that they change their brand. We stay up to date with potential changes and connect the new names to the correct airline code. In our announcements we will make sure that the airline and airport codes are always current. By doing this, our clients can, without any concern, announce all of their flights, even new and updated ones!

MEET THE TEAM
Today we’re introducing Bob Jooren. Bob started working at AviaVox as an intern while studying Media Technology. He also did Commercial Economics and after working at a couple of different companies for several years he luckily ended up at AviaVox again. He’s been with us for over 14 years now.
In his role as Senior Project Manager, he’s responsible for the implementation of our systems. Sometimes he assists our sales team before we get the project. But his job mainly includes the management and coordination of our internal project team, together with corresponding with the customer and the other project parties. Ultimately, this results in a customer visit where the final installation and delivery of our systems on site is completed with user training, final delivery testing and the handover to the customer.
“The best result is to hear your own return flight being announced by the system you have installed in the past few days!”

The Annual Showcase edition of Passenger Terminal EXPO is now available and we are featured with an article on how airports can improve the passenger experience despite unprecedented staff shortages.

“What makes a travel experience stressful for passengers? Language barriers. Long waits at check-in and security. Confusion about gates and procedures. Waiting too long to recover their baggage. Staff shortages intensify all these aggravations. When instructions, announcements and information are communicated clearly, their uncertainty resolves. By automating those announcements and taking them off the hands of the ground crew, airports not only improve the passenger experience but also free up personnel for other tasks.”

We would like to introduce Annabella van Tuijl, a language developer and coordinator at AviaVox. “From an early age on, my interest in languages was undeniable as I always used to tell my parents I was going to learn all the languages in the world.” With a bachelor’s degree in Chinese studies and a master’s in Chinese linguistics she became part of AviaVox’s content team a couple of years ago. “AviaVox is the perfect place for me. As part of my daily work, I get to use my linguistic expertise and learn new things every day.”

At AviaVox we have developed an intelligent automated announcement system, specifically for airports and airlines. We offer two specific solutions for different uses in the airport. Our Airport Terminal Client, which we call ATeC, for airport wide, dynamic and canned announcements. In addition to that AviaVox provides the Airline Gate Client, also known as AGC, for dynamic announcements at the gate which are designed to support airports and airlines in their boarding processes.

If you want to learn more about our system and what could work for your airport, check out our website for more examples or reach out to schedule a full demo.

In many languages the word for ‘gate’ actually means ‘exit’, like ‘Ausgang’ in German, ‘uitgang’ in Dutch and ‘uscita’ in Italian. To avoid confusion, the English word ‘gate’ is also used in these languages, which has a broader meaning. ‘Gate’ can refer to the actual exit, but also to the gate area, the area where passengers are waiting and where the staff is working. In Dutch the word ‘uitgang’ has been completely been replaced by ‘gate’, while in German and Italian the word is only used in some contexts. In German ‘gate’ is used to refer to a location in stead of the actual exit to the plane:

Boarding is closing now at gate 5.
Das Einsteigen endet nun an Gate 5.

This leads to another English term that is used throughout many languages, ‘boarding’. The verb ‘to board’ can be used in a variety of ways: passengers can board the airplane, the gate staff can board passengers and an airplane can be boarded, to name a few. In Dutch the word ‘instappen’ is used when passengers board the plane and ‘boarding’ when the gate staff will board passengers:

We will then board Business Class passengers.
Wij zullen daarna verder gaan met het boarden van Business Class passagiers.

Which words do you use in your language for ‘gate’ and ‘boarding’?

AviaVox supports a variety of Indian languages. We would like to highlight three languages we currently support: Hindi (650+ million speakers), Marathi (100+ million speakers) and Kannada (60+ million speakers). And as we speak, we are developing more Indian languages to add to our automated passenger announcement system. Today a post to point out the similarities in Hindi, Marathi and Kannada.
