Please board now at gate 15
In many languages the word for ‘gate’ actually means ‘exit’, like ‘Ausgang’ in German, ‘uitgang’ in Dutch and ‘uscita’ in Italian. To avoid confusion, the English word ‘gate’ is also used in these languages, which has a broader meaning. ‘Gate’ can refer to the actual exit, but also to the gate area, the area where passengers are waiting and where the staff is working. In Dutch the word ‘uitgang’ has been completely been replaced by ‘gate’, while in German and Italian the word is only used in some contexts. In German ‘gate’ is used to refer to a location in stead of the actual exit to the plane:
Boarding is closing now at gate 5.
Das Einsteigen endet nun an Gate 5.
This leads to another English term that is used throughout many languages, ‘boarding’. The verb ‘to board’ can be used in a variety of ways: passengers can board the airplane, the gate staff can board passengers and an airplane can be boarded, to name a few. In Dutch the word ‘instappen’ is used when passengers board the plane and ‘boarding’ when the gate staff will board passengers:
We will then board Business Class passengers.
Wij zullen daarna verder gaan met het boarden van Business Class passagiers.
Which words do you use in your language for ‘gate’ and ‘boarding’?
Hi - Mr - Kn
AviaVox supports a variety of Indian languages. We would like to highlight three languages we currently support: Hindi (650+ million speakers), Marathi (100+ million speakers) and Kannada (60+ million speakers). And as we speak, we are developing more Indian languages to add to our automated passenger announcement system. Today a post to point out the similarities in Hindi, Marathi and Kannada.
