The Pijp was built at the end of the 19th century to allow a new influx of labor and population to Amsterdam.
Because many artists, students and even prostitutes came to live in the new district,
As a result, De Pijp was soon referred to as the Latin Quarter of Amsterdam with the small streets, the residents, the many bars and restaurants and the atmosphere in De Pijp, that resembles the famous Parisian student district.
More than 144 nationalities live in De Pijp and the district is one of the most popular locations in Amsterdam to live, shop and go out.
Highlights are the Albert Cuypmarkt with 250 stalls every day. Many with a most diverse culinary offer.
Home of the Heineken Brewery alongside other microbreweries.
Architectural examples of houses built according to the Amsterdam School of Architecture.
Next to the museum district, the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh museum.

Prinsengracht 263, dating from 1635, is a house like many other canal houses in the center of Amsterdam.
But this is the Anne Frank House and is a place you need to visit if you come to Amsterdam.
The Secret Annex is at the back and is not visible from the street. The entrance was closed with a revolving bookcase.
During the Second World War, Anne Frank and her family hid here for two years and wrote their famous diaries. The Anne Frank House is a moving and depressing testimony to history.
At the age of fifteen Anne Frank died in February 1945 in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.
Most of us have read the diary and a visit is the way to actually see where it all happened.
It’s important realize what has happened during the war and how Jewish families suffered and died for no reason.
The N***s murdered over 100,000 of the Jews in Amsterdam.
An emotional, humbling and moving visit. She will never be forgotten!
Try to book three month in advance and the thirty minute presentation before the visit is very worth it.

What is now the Jordaan was in the seventeenth century the place of housing for workers who built the mansions on the canals.
It looks like a miniature version of the canal belt, but smaller houses with narrower canals and bridges.
This gives this district an intimate and small-scale atmosphere.
Best to discover by walking which takes you past cozy markets, authentic cafes, hidden courtyards, the many modern art galleries, the famous Westerkerk and Noorderkerk.

The seventeenth-century canal belt area of Amsterdam has been granted UNESCO World Heritage Status.
The four main canals Singelgracht, Herengracht, Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht form a concentric belt of more than 60 miles of canal, about 90 islands and 1500 bridges.
The most picturesque canals are:
Brouwersgracht is often voted for as the most beautiful canal in Amsterdam.
Brewery Canal was the area full of beer breweries and warehouses to store the grains. Nowadays converted into apartments.
Prinsengracht is the longest canal with it's length of more than 3 kilometers. The construction of Prinsengracht started in1612 and took almost 50 years to complete. The construction started in 1612 when Amsterdam was the third largest city in the world, after London and Paris. Many different functions: apartments, offices, shops, hotels, cafes, restaurants, churches, galleries, coffee shops, museums. The most famous icons here are Anne Frank’s House and the Westerchuch.
Bloemgracht (translated: Flower Canal), bordering the Jordaan area and near the Westerkerk. A with flower decorated bridges span the canal.
Herengracht is one of main of the four. With the so called ‘Gouden Bocht’ (‘golden bend’) it is considered to be the most prestigious. Most impressive housesbuilt by the rich merchants of the 17th century Dutch Republic. The mayor of Amsterdam is living at Herengracht number 502. Femke Halsema, the first ever female mayor of Amsterdam.
Reguliersgrcht is a place to take a ‘postcard pictures' of Amsterdam. Most Amsterdam canals are bending in half a circle, but Reguliersgracht is straight. Therefore a unique perspective is visible of seven similar bridges in a row.
Best walking, so take comfortable shoes and start exploring. Even better, take a boat trip and enjoy Amsterdam’s legendary canals at night; simply stunning.
