Plac Bohaterów Getta in Kraków, the square in the former Jewish Ghetto where people were rounded up for deportation and most of the time their death. Today, 70 chairs commemorate the 70,000 Kraków jews deported. Some chairs now also show photos of some of the 7 October victims; a sombre connection between anti-semitism then and now.

Captain James Donald Richter (35) from Houston, Texas. Richter was a forward observer with the 90th Division and killed in action during the Battle of Schumann’s Eck, Luxembourg on 9 Jan 1945. Today, we laid a wreath at his grave as part of our anniversary tour.

A few photos of yesterday’s 2nd day of a superb tour with US clients, visiting Aachen and the Hurtgen Forest. We started the day by looking at the capture of Aachen by US 1st Div, visiting the city proper, Crucifix Hill and Dawson’s Ridge. After that we turned to the exploits of US 28th Div and 2nd Rangers in the Hurtgen Forest, visiting Vossenack, the Kall Trail, Kommerscheidt and Hill 400.

80 years ago today, British 2nd Army captured Blerick in Op Guildford, the 1st use of the Armoured Breaching Force technique to break into heavily reinforced enemy strongholds with specialised armour and APC-borne infantry. It proved a massive success. Blerick was secured by 4pm.

Tonight, I will give a lecture on the events east of the Corridor between 21 Sept and 3 Dec 1944 at Wings of Liberation Museum. Op Guildford will fittingly be a key part of that talk.

Two times the Kall Trail. One photo after the battle of Nov 1944. The other photo was taken during yesterday’s Hürtgen Forest Tour, guiding a group of Dutch clients 80 years & 8 days after US 112th regiment withdrew back across the Kall.
