France, Bordeaux, Margaux, Château Le Coteau

Château Le Coteau is a winery in Margaux that has 12 ha of vineyards in Arsac. The typical gravel vineyard has 65% cabernet sauvignon, 25% merlot, 8% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot. The winery is led by Eric Léglise and is very committed to biodiversity in and around the vineyards. It also gives space to bees.

One of his wines 'Anthophora' 2019 refers to these bees. It is a great intense wine of 100% cabernet sauvignon, of which a total of 2700 bottles were made. Other wines in this series that refer to the bees are the 'Eucera' 2000 (4000 bottles) and 'Andrena' 2021 (3000 bottles).

France, Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux, Château Prieuré Sainte Anne 2020

Beautiful discovery: a winery run by a Belgian couple in the AOC Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux, with 4.5 hectares of vineyards in Capian (20 km south of Boredeaux) on hills overlooking the Garonne. The soil type is mainly clay-gravel.

Château Prieuré Sainte Anne 2020 consists of 90% merlot and 10% cabernet sauvignon, aged for 12 months in oak barrels, of which 30% in new barrels. A nice balanced wine to drink now, but can certainly be kept for a number of years.

May 23: International chardonnay day with Yalumba

We have many days for our grape varieties and May 23 is 'chardonnay day'. It is one of the most planted grape varieties in the world; with over 211,000 hectares it takes fifth place, after cabernet sauvignon, merlot, tempranillo and airén. It is also a grape that comes in many styles.

In the Australian Eden Valley, near Adelaide, the winery Yalumba makes a fine fresh, medium bodied wine from the grape: the 'Samuel's Collection 2020' is aged for 11 months in new (15% of final blend) and 1-3 years in old French oak barriques; notes of toast, light cedar.

Australia, Brown Brothers, tarrango 2022

This is a wine from the winery Brown Brothers, a member of Australia's First Families of Wine (AFFW). The winery is located in Milawa, Victoria and is known for its many innovations, such as the development of new grape varieties. Tarrango is one of them; it is a cross between the white variety sultana and the red Portuguese variety touriga nacional (developed in 1965).

The grape thrives in the sunny climate. Tarrango wines are juicy, soft, fresh and fruity; alc. 12%. The wine can be enjoyed chilled and goes well with barbecues and spicy food. The wine is mainly intended for the Australian market.

Austria, Burgenland, DAC Leithaberg, Höpler, blaufränkisch 2019

The Höpler winery has a number of quality vineyards on the rich soil of clay, limestone, chalk, sand, silt and gravel between Leithagebirge and Neusiedler See. In addition to blaufränkisch, grape varieties such as grüner veltliner, riesling, zweigelt and pinot noir have been planted.

The blaufränkisch 2019 is a pleasant, fresh and elegant wine with aromas of blackcurrants, spiciness and soft tannins. The wine is aged for 14 months in used French oak barrels.

Australia, McLaren Vale, Yangarra, Ovitelli Blanc 2020

The Ovitelli Blanc is a beautiful and intense wine from the organic/biodynamic Yangarra Estate. The wine is a combination of the grape varieties 50% grenache blanc, 25% roussanne, 12% clairette, 9% piquepoul and 4% bourboulenc. It is partially fermented in ceramic eggs and 59% of the final blend was skin contacted.

Yangarra was the first winery in Australia to plant the grenache blanc for commercial use.

Classic and Contemporary Australia

On May 13th a fascinating tasting and masterclass took place in Antwerp about wine developments and wine styles in Australia. The masterclass was given by the passionate .symington MW.

One of the features of the Australian wine policy is the freedom given to winemakers. It provides a lot of innovation, experimentation and the planting of a diversity of grape varieties. Naturally, shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, grenache, pinot noir, chardonnay, semillon and riesling take a prominent place, but a lot of attention is paid to other, alternative, interesting varieties.

Two wines with alternative grape varieties stood out to me very positively
1) , Clare Valley, Assyrtiko 2023: a delicious fresh wine with beautiful notes of lime, red grapefruit

2) , Barossa Valley, Saperavi 2019 (Discovery Range): an intense full bodied wine with lots of dark red fruit, pleasant tannins

Australia, McLaren Vale, Eileen Hardy Shiraz 2016

In preparation for an interesting masterclass on wines from Australia on Monday, May 13 in Antwerp, I tasted one of the wines from Hardys Wines.

The name Eileen was given by Eileen Hardy's children in 1973 and represents one of the company's best shiraz wines.

The balanced Eileen shiraz 2016 is characterized by fine notes of plum, chocolate and fine mild tannins; Aged for 17 months in French oak barrels. The grapes come from two vineyards with vines of an average of 80 years old. The wine is ready to drink now, but can still be stored. The retail price in the Netherlands is 38 euros.

The Hardy's wine company is part of Accolade Wines (which is managed by The Carlyle Group). Hardy's has several vineyards in McLaren Vale (the 'home base'; McLaren Vale Wine Region is also known for quality grenache wines) as well as several in other Australian wine regions.

Netherlands, Stampersgat, wine tasting

On Saturday, May 4, I gave a successful wine tasting on behalf of Roosendaals Wijnhuis. This tasting was combined with excellent matching dishes. All wines were appreciated, including the Chilean malbec Gran Reserva 'Pedegroso' from Viña Tabali, Limari Valley, the Italian Suris Rosato from 100% birbet, Cascina Sant Eufemia, Piemonte and the German riesling Spätlese Mülheimer Elisenberg from weingut Bauer, Mosel.

France, Gigondas, Domaine De Longue Toque, 2015

A wine from Gigondas from the large winery Gabriel Meffre (part of Boisset La Famille des Grand Vins) and important in the Rhône Valley. The Domaine de Longue Toque in Gigondas has 27 hectares of vineyards.

Gigondas is characterized by Dentelles de Montmirail, a mountain range of limestone and limestone marl; Gigondas grape varieties are grenache, syrah, mourvèdre and cinsault.

The wine from Domaine De Longue Toque, 2015 is characterized by aromas of cassis, spiciness, on the palate notes of ripe red fruit and cocoa and still firm tannins.

I found the wine for 13.50 euros at an Albert Heijn XL supermarket.

France, Rhône, Dauvergne & Ranvier

I had the opportunity to taste some wines from the winery Dauvergne Ranvier from Tavel. The winery makes wines from grapes purchased from various winegrowers in the Rhône and Bordeaux, guides and advises them and also has several own vineyards (10 hectares) in Lirac and Tavel.

The tasting table contained very solid wines from Luberon, for example, but I was most pleasantly surprised by their Lirac (syrah, grenache, mourvèdre), Saint Joseph (100% syrah), Chateauneuf du Pape (dominant grenache) and Tavel (rosé; syrah, mourvedre). Recommended.

The Netherlands, Leiden, Proeflokaal 1574 (wine bar)

On Sunday, April 21, I visited the wine bar at Apothekersdijk 38 in the beautiful historic city center of Leiden. The cozy tasting room is beautifully situated on one of the canals. There is an extensive wine list with wines by the glass and bottle. There is also a nice menu with small snacks. The staff is friendly and eager to learn. The tasting room is definitely recommended and the terrace on the canal is open when the weather is nice.

France, Jules Bellery, Cognac VS

Jules Bellery is a brand name of the Cognac House Louis Royer (part of Terroirs Distillers) and is sold specifically in the Netherlands at liquor store Gall & Gall (Ahold Delhaize). This VS (Very Special) is produced with grapes from the Cognac regions Fins Bois, Bons Bois and Petite Champagne and is aged for a maximum of 4 years.

It is a pleasantly soft and fruity Cognac thanks to the short aging time in French oak barrels. Aromas of caramel and pear.

Louis Royer does not have its own vineyards and buys the grapes. It also markets the brand name Joseph Guy in the Netherlands.

Portugal. Port, Feuerheerd, Tawny 20 years

A tawny port with a wonderful primary and rich aroma of walnuts, then raisins, a bit of vanilla, fruity and nuttiness in the taste and refined acidity. Recommended.

The port is combined with a Dutch cheese: Beemster 48+, aged 10 years. This port also goes very well with creamy desserts.

Feuerheerd has had a port tradition since 1815 and is part of the Portuguese Vinihold.

Belgium, Duvel, Brasil Rhum Edition

One of Duvel's limited editions is the Barrel Aged, Brasil Rhum Edition. The beer has been allowed to mature for 8 months in a selection of used cachaça barrels. (Cachaça is a sugar cane distillate from Brazil and is comparable to white rum).

This Duvel of 11% alc. has a soft taste, full of fruity tropical aromas and a pleasant light acidity. Duvel has also made a special glass for this beer, but the traditional glass also works fine!

Wine tasting table 'Kookfabriek Amsterdam', a fine wine selection

On March 13, I led a wine tasting table at one of the locations of The Farm Kitchen's Kookfabriek. This time the location was in Amsterdam. The (international) business community comes together here in teams to take on a (plant-based) gastronomic challenge.

At this wine tasting table I like to work with wines from among others De Grendel, Kleine Zalze (South Africa), Bodegas Luis Cañas - Vinos de Rioja Alavesa (Spain), Domäne Wachau (Austria), Cecchi (Italy).

Italy, Piemonte, Ricossa, Barbera Appassimento 2022

This wine is made by the winery Ricossa, located in Castel Boglione (southeast of Asti). It makes various wines from the most famous grape varieties in the region: Arneis, Nebbiolo (Barolo and Barberesco), Brachetto, Albarossa and Barbera (also including a DOCG Nizza). Of the wines made from Barbera, I tasted the Barbera Appassimento. The grapes for this wine have dried for 5-6 weeks in a temperature-controlled environment. It produces an accessible wine with lots of forest fruit and soft tannins. Alc. 14%.

This wine is sold in the Netherlands at the supermarket chain Albert Heijn and is regularly available at a discount for around 9 euros.

Italy, Abruzzo, Tenuta Pesolillo

At the ViniBio event on Monday March 4 in Amsterdam I found many fine wines. I tasted, among other things, the (organic) wines from the in Chieti, Abruzzo. The following wines from this winery are highly recommended:

Belgium, Espace Chimay, Grande Réserve 2023

Chimay is one of the 12 recognized Trappist beers. It is known for beautiful beers such as Chimay Bleu and Chimay Rouge (the oldest type, since 1862). From 2015, the brewery in the abbey in Bourlers, Scourmont (Chimay) also makes special beer with a second or third fermentation in barrels. The 2023 edition has a triple fermentation in American oak barrels (45%), French oak barrels (30%) and in barrels in which Calvados has matured (25%). Alc. 10.5%.

It produces a beer with a full, rich and warm taste. Recommended.

My personal recommendation: visit Espace Chimay in Bourlers for an excellent experience with Chimay beers and cheeses.

France, Delord, Bas-Armagnac, Fine

In the glass a refined Armagnac from the distillery Delord Frères. Characteristic of Armagnac is that it is made from the grape varieties ugni blanc, colombard, folle-blanche and baco and is obtained by double distillation.

makes a great range of Armagnacs, many of which are matured in oak barrels, such as a VSOP, hors d'âge, 20 years, 25 years, premium XO (blend of Armagnacs aged between 25 and 45 years).

I tasted the Fine Armagnac. This has matured for three years. The result offers a delicious fruity Armagnac with aromas of raisins and apples, notes of vanilla. Alc. 40%. Recommended.

Italy, Toscana, Cecchi, Chianti Classico Riserva 2019

The 'Riserva di Famiglia' from the is a wine made from the grape varieties sangiovese (90%), canaiolo and cabernet sauvignon (10%). The wine is aged for 12 months in oak barrels and then in the bottle for another three months.

It is a decent fresh (fine acidity) and elegant wine, aromas of cherries and with mild tannins.

Albania, Korça 2000, Kabërnet Reserve 2018

Wonderfully intense wine from the Korça2000/Menea winery from the southeast of Albania, near the city of Korçë. This wine is a combination of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot. The wine has been aged for one year in oak barrels. Lots of dark red fruit and firm tannins. Highly recommended.

Albania, Kantina Çobo, puls and shesh i bardhe grape varieties

Two white wines from the Kantina Çobo made from typical indigenous Albanian grape varieties: puls and shesh i bardhe. The grape variety puls is mainly found in the south of Albania and the shesh i bardhe is also found in other parts.

Both grape varieties produce pleasant fruity wines with low acidity.

Albania, Kantina Caco, Harmoni

With Harmoni, the Kantina CACO proves to make excellent wines. The winery is located about 10 kilometers south of the city of Pogradec on Lake Ohrid.

Harmoni is a delicious blend of Merlot (90%) and the indigenous grape variety Gems. The robust bottle has an attractive label. The label (in three colors, same wine) depicts Harmonia from the Greek mythology: goddess of harmony and concord. Highly recommended. Price around 25 euros.

Cyprus (Gr), Tsiakkas Winery, quality with indigenous grapes

Tsiakkas is a well-known and renowned winery in Cyprus. In addition to making wines with international grape varieties, it has also focused on planting typical indigenous grape varieties of Cyprus. This results in high-quality wines from the following grape varieties: Promara, Xynisteri, Mavro Ambelisimo, Vamvakada, Yiannoudi and Spourtiko. Recommended.

Spain, DOP Cariñena, Care, garnache blanca barrel fermented, 2022

A fine and intense Grenache Blanc wine from the Bodegas Care, founded in 2000. The wine, aged for two months in French oak, offers wonderful floral and citrus aromas and ripe tropical fruits in the taste.

Care is the brand of Bodegas Añadas and is the ancient name that the Romans used to refer to the city of Cariñena.

The special labels of the bottles are designed by the artist Enrique Torrijos.

Special Belgian beers to discover soon

1) Chimay, 'La Grande Réserve', edition 2023. The beer has undergone triple fermentation and maturation in Calvados barrels (25%) and in American (45%) and French (30%) oak barrels. Alc. 10.5%

2) Duvel, Barrel Aged, Brasil Rhum Edition. This beer has matured in used Cachaça barrels. This edition comes with a specific glass. Alc. 11%.

Cachaça is a Brazilian drink made from freshly squeezed sugar cane juice. It is similar to white rum, but has a more pronounced sugar cane flavor.
