In 1 week time Tecla will set sail for Iceland! Our first voyage in Iceland will start on the 11th of July until the 18th of July, when we arrive in Isafjordur, North West corner of Iceland. Isafjordur is opposite of an amazing sailing ground called Hornstrandir Nature Reserve. If we have time we will visit at least one of the fjords of Hornstrandir.
More info: http://www.tecla-sailing.com/reykjavik-isafjodur/

The second week focuses on Hornstrandir and will start on the 19th of July until the 26th of July. Hornstrandir is a uninhabited nature reserve, but for a few people who stay there in summertime as a holiday or as nature guides or biologists. We will go for amazing hikes, see waterfalls, ice lakes, Arctic foxes, many arctic birds and catch a few glimpses of whales in the main fjord and not have to meet anybody for days! https://www.tecla-sailing.com/hornstrandir-isafjordur/

Covid-19?
Slowly Iceland has been opening up her borders, since the 15th of June, the borders are open for all EU/Schengen countries, with a demand of taking a corona test upon arrival and self quarantining for 24 hours, until the test results are in. You can find all information on www.covid.is
On board we will keep to a set of hygiene rules which are developed and approved for our traditional vessels

WELCOME HOME TECLA!

For the past 14 months, the Tecla and her crew have circumnavigated the American continent. She left on April 12, 2019 and on September 16 she announced her first major milestone of this voyage, making her way through the North West Passage. As the 312th ship, she has found her way through the ice since the first ship (roughly the same size as the Tecla) found its way through this insanely impressive area in 1906, under the direction of Roald Amundsen.

After this passage, another great challenge lay ahead. A trip of over 6000NM to the Galapagos Islands. From there to Easter Island and a round of Cape Horn that was completed in 28 days. A second successful Cape Horn rounding.

After the first 28-day visit to Antarctica, the journey continued with a 55-day trip through South Georgia, to South Africa, Cape Town. This trip started on February 2. The first reports about the spread of the COVID-19 virus already started to emerge. However, the impact that the virus would have on the world 55 days later was unprecedented.

The Tecla arrived in Cape Town 4 days after the stringent South African lockdown. This meant for the crew and guests of the Tecla that they were not allowed to enter the country. After a lot of pressure from embassies and a lot of help from BBZ, RBG and friends at home, we finally got permission to fly our guests home after 3 weeks. However, no new crew was allowed on board, so the old crew had to continue on board to the next destination.

Now, with more than 7,000 NM under their belt, a short stop for fresh food and diesel in the Azores, and no permission for crew / guest changes at Horta, they arrive in Den Helder, Willemsoord on Friday morning.

Due to the amount of ice accumulating at the mouth of the fjord, Scoresbysund is only accessible for limited time every year during summer. Tecla will be sailing there twice this summer departing from Iceland. Two bucket list destinations packed in one voyage.

Despite the new technology, on board of a ship today maps are still relevant.

Ancient mapmakers were terrified of blank spaces and filled the spaces with scary sea monsters. Nowadays, we are not afraid anymore of the blank spaces, and we can also check our route and position on the board computer.

We found this fascinating article and thought it is nice to share it with all who are interested in maps. https://news.nationalgeographic.com/2017/11/maps-history-horror-vacui-art-cartography-blank-spaces/

Inventing cities, mountains, and monsters to fill the empty spaces on maps is a centuries-old tradition in cartography.

Update by Sarah on board Bark Europa: "There is a constant coming and going of penguins, up and down the long highways. The bay is filled with ice, our ship suddenly small between the glaciers and the enormous icebergs. It is late summer, a lot of the snow has melted and the algae that grow under the snow have come to the
surface. We are no longer in a white world, no, the snow is more colorful than one could imagine. Red and green and yellow, the ice blue, turquoise and bright."

Traveling from Cape Town to the Azores is a true Ocean adventure. A voyage of 54 days with over 5000 miles, crossing the equator, possibly visiting St Helena and Ascension Island before finishing the voyage on an island group in the middle of an ocean, the Azores. Oh and not to forget: sunsets like these 😍

Lord Howe Island according to Lonely Planet: "Rising from the Pacific a remote 600km from the NSW mainland, little Lord Howe's tropical, World Heritage–listed beauty is surprisingly under the radar given the jaw-dropping spectacle of this former volcano. It looks like a Bond villain's lair, with two lofty mountains overlooking an idyllic lagoon, perfect crescents of beach and a verdant interior criss-crossed with walking trails."

I guess you can understand why we have to go there now. On our way from Brisbane to Hobart the Bark Europa will make a stop here.

Update Tecla RIDING THE WAVES
We were getting somewhat tired of the waves rocking us side to side, us working hard at the helm to keep the sails full, and downstairs working hard to make sure nothing falls down and nobody slides off their seats. So this afternoon we gybed and made East. The gybe was our first gybe and although the waves always make it hard to do it calmly, this was actually a very nice controlled gybe! With sails out on starboard we soon sped off and noticed the significant change in the ships reaction to the waves! Instead of fighting them, she seemed to be riding them! They were almost straight on our stern and we were just surfing down the waves with 7 to 8 knots heading even a little south of east.

Update Cape Horn voyage by Captain Jet: " What a perfect day this turned out to be! We sailed out of a frontal passage, had a bit of rain until 05:00h and then the skies cleared. We were expecting the wind to decrease to about 8 knots and turn to the south west. The last time it did that, we had to start the engine as the wind was to weak to keep the sails full, and we would get stuck in an area of no wind for days.. So we were sort of expecting it to do this again, in our heads we had not started the 3000 NM uninterrupted sailing miles for our cape horn voyage. But as the wind slowly decreased, so did the waves.. And with the smallest breeze and the biggest jib up front, we have been sailing through the day with a speed of 5 to 6 knots, enjoying blue skies with fluffy clouds, a cool breeze and a warm sun."

Update @ [93710567719:274:Tecla]: "We have left Easter Island behind us and are bound for Cape Horn. We left on a perfectly sunny, pacific weather day. Most of us got sun burned as most of us are from the Northern Hemisphere where it is winter right now. This night watch I am still on flip flops and most of those on deck are not wearing more then pants and a sweatshirt. It’s a very nice start of this voyage!"

Our Story

The three Dutch Tall Ships ‘Tecla’, bark ‘Europa’ and ‘Oosterschelde’ sail around the world together. Many guests joined our voyages and came home loaded with amazing stories to tell, great memories and many plans for new adventures yet to come. Since our world trip we have decided to join forces under the label Dutch Tall Ships. Together we sail to many exciting destinations all over the world. Go island hopping in Cape Verde, explore the unspoiled nature in Iceland, sail with us to the Arctic regions. We participate in Tall Ships Races and we cross the worlds’ oceans. We like to go beyond the ordinary and make every single voyage a spectacular one.

On board you are part of our guest crew and you will participate in our watch system. This means you will set the sails, take the helm, navigate and (if you dare) climb the rigging. Sailing experience is not required, on board our professional sailors will teach you all about sailing!
