☀️ It is a glorious summer’s day in this scene by Paulus Potter. People are enjoying themselves in the water; cows look on and seek coolness in the shade and the pond. Potter had a lot of fun with the reflections in the water, to which the painting owes its Dutch nickname: The Reflected Cow.

Although Potter portrayed the animals faithfully and in detail, he did not get their proportions quite right. The grazing sheep, for example, is too large if you compare it to the drinking cow. This is probably because Potter sketched the animals individually, later bringing all the sketches together without fully fine-tuning the scale.

☀️ Het is een stralende zomerdag in deze voorstelling van Paulus Potter. Mensen spelen in het water, terwijl het vee toekijkt en verkoeling zoekt in de schaduw en het water. Potter leefde zich uit in de weerspiegelingen in dat water. Het schilderij dankt er dan ook zijn naam aan.

Hoewel Potter de dieren natuurgetrouw en gedetailleerd weergaf, kloppen hun verhoudingen niet helemaal. Het grazende schaap bijvoorbeeld, is te groot als je het vergelijkt met de drinkende koe. Dit komt waarschijnlijk doordat Potter de dieren afzonderlijk schetste. Die schetsen voegde hij samen zonder de onderlinge verhoudingen helemaal goed af te stemmen.

Kom Verre-Kijken in de meivakantie! We hebben de verrekijkers al klaarliggen om op speurtocht te gaan in het grootste schilderij van Nederland (120 meter breed bij 14 meter hoog).. Vraag naar de gratis speurtocht bij de balie. Naast het Panorama van Scheveningen vind je in het museum ook een bijzondere tentoonstelling van kunstenaar Ulrike Heydenreich over moderne panorama’s, boeiende schilderijen van het kunstenaarsechtpaar Mesdag en een gezellig museumcafé.
