I hope you have all returned from the festive season fit, and we'll and ready to take on the year.

Learning how to fish the canals at different times of the year and certainly when the air temperature is high requires attention to detail to get the job done.
Casting away with your new bright shiny spinner generally won't work in the clear conditions we have currently. I'm reminded of something I was taught by the late Alan Davies he would always say, "this lure catches anglers but can it catch fish?"

This is why I prefer softbaits as they are much more life like, and fish will hammer them during the bright sunny parts of the day.

What a great time it is to be alive. There's good numbers of big fish around the canal system, all the hydro lakes are very full at this present time and they're carrying a bit of color which means water temps won't get too high.

It was great to hear one of my clients say to me this week "I came here not knowing how to fish these canals and now I know how". What gave me a real buzz is that he went away and used the skills he'd learnt and caught fish, now that's why I love my job.

Went out to have a cast with my fly rod yesterday in atrocious conditions and was rewarded with this fantastic. The Ohau and Tekapo Canals are definitely a fantastic sports fishery where if done correctly fish can be safely returned to the water. This nice Jack of over 20lb was released to fight another day.
