Posted my annual carbon travel roundup! 👍

Good news ✅ I actually took more flight free trips than last year, and avoided more flight carbon in the process

Bad news ❌ A 2% increase in total emissions, with two trips - a transatlantic flight and return AMS to HEL - counting for a lot of it

On the one hand, I resisted pressure to take more flights across the Atlantic - on the other, I could and should have avoided flying BCN to BRU in October

There will be more pressure than ever for me to fly for business and leisure in 2025, but I am able to plan a bit further in advance - that should give me a few more options

Overal not what i wanted to present - I'd rather have a reduction! But better to be honest than pretend it's all fine...

Some classic Parisian vibe and aesthetic from a September morning. Arriving off the night bus, Bercy station might not be pretty but the rest of the city sure is - and you can explore it on foot within minutes!

How to Travel - Overlooked Stops 💼 🚆
(can you guess them all? 👀 Answers below)

One overlooked part of travel is the destination...

"Wait, isn't that the first thing people *start with*?! What do you mean?" 🤔

Sometimes, yes - people want a specific city or attraction, and travel for that. But how often do you hear someone say they want to go to (country), 'somewhere warm', or even just "Europe" (if you live on another continent)? A lot, I'll bet! 👍

A great way to see Europe more cheaply and avoid tourist crowds is to go via overlooked and smaller places/towns 🌇

For our next trip, consider using public transport to deliberately get away from the big, famous places like capital cities - very little effort, almost certainly cheaper, and a much more unique experience!

Even on a cloudy day, Český Krumlov doesn't disappoint! 🇨🇿🏰

Walking round the loop of the Vltava River through a castle, turning off into small streets of red rooftops - this is the 2nd most popular tourist spot in Czechia after Prague 👀

While it is, of course, pretty touristy as a result, the views don't disappoint - and as usual, you can find something more interesting by turning just a little ways off the main streets 👍

Exploring Helsinki by tram 🚊🇫🇮

Line 8️⃣
⛱️ Hietaranta beach - on one of the few summer days where it isn't crowded (the sun was in, after all)
👣 Lapinlahti bay - walking around by the gardens and cemeteries of the city's western edge

Line 1️⃣
🚲 Baana - an old railway cutting transformed into an active travel route connecting the main station to places like the Natural History Museum

Lines 2️⃣/7️⃣
⛪ Aleksanteri II Square and Cathedral
🛍️ Mikonkatu (for Aleksanterinkatu) - shopping street with great architecture

Train Connections🚆
Several lines run directly to the Central station, but also others further north connect to Pasila, where every train coming in/put of Helsinki also stops 👍

The northern student city of Groningen in the Netherlands can get a bad wrap for being wet and windy - and that part's often true!

But the city has some unique architecture, and on a summer evening it can be an absolute joy to cycle through the city streets, past the scenic A river and canals

These photos were taken in late September, and it was still surprisingly warm!

The city is also a little more international than you might expect for it's location, as it's a popular student destination - my cousin actually went here and met his fiancé at the university!

Visiting Suomenlinna - Pt.2 🏝️ 🚢

Taking the ferry to Suomenlinna, me and loved walking the old roads and paths toward the gunmetal-grey Baltic Sea, with an impressive set of cannons still in place...
..and fantastic mustikkapiirakka (blueberry cake) at Café Piper () 🫐 Their Finnish sodas also have these nice ring pull tops 👍

The island was a fortress, passing between Swedish, Russian, and later Finnish hands. Like a massive park and historical monument, Suomenlinna also has museums and people still living there - highly recommend visiting!

Tram Depot - Open Day, Düsseldorf 🚊

As part of the city's open day on 8th September, me and went to the city's old tram depot, and also hopped on one of the heritage trams running to/from the Hauptbahnhof that day! 🚉

Love the old tram interiors, and the depot was fun - they even had a model railway/tramway set! We got a great pair of seats at the back of the tram for a view back to the station 👍

FIRST TIME IN FINLAND - HELSINKI 🇫🇮

What a treat for travellers! Helsinki is a capital with excellent public transport (), including intercity and commuter trains () - you can even arrive directly in the city centre by international ferry ⛴️

The central station is a work of art, the city is beautiful, and it's an ideal summer destination: not too hot, fantastic options for ice cream (alongside more savoury options 😉 🦌)...

Trams are great here, covering the city centre within transit zone A and including some old models running on old cobbles streets 🚊

The city also has one of the world's northernmost metro lines 🚇 and ever improving bike options

Visiting Manchester & Liverpool 🐝 🦅

Have you visited these two cities, which were linked by the *world's first ever dedicated passenger railway*?

Manchester is the larger of the two, served by Metrolink trams and the newly unified Bee Network buses 🚌

Liverpool has a distinct cultural identity and history, and is served by the metro-like (which now has new trains with level boarding, perhaps the best in the UK!) 🚇

Views from:
- Canalside under the rail and tram viaducts 🚊
(only a street over from the old L&M railway terminus, one of the world's first train stations!)
- Great Irish pubs from both cities, ☘️ and ☘️
- Victoria station, both the old ticket booths and the old railways lines which used to serve the North West of England 🚂
- Wall murals from Liverpool, near Constance Street
- The Liver Building and some of Liverpool's classical architecture, which also survives near Lime Street and City Hall 🏛️

Some nice news - the LIMAX Arriva trains between Maastricht and Aachen will finally run all the way to Liege, starting on 9th June! 🇩🇪🇧🇪🇳🇱

One more piece on the European railway jigsaw - one more cross border link. We need many more, we need speed, we need low costs - but this is a start!

Cheap/Local food and drink tips 👇
For Rennes 🇫🇷 and Prague 🇨🇿

Back in Brittany, my wife's first time there, and we had to have some galettes! Rich buckwheat (blé noir/sarrasin 🌾) and butter, bolées de cidre, eggs and sausage...

They have a massive range of options, so vegetarians can eat these too - try to avoid tourist traps, though we only partially succeeded there 😅

An amazing chicken with potatoes and sauce at the Ateliers Du Vent 🐔

Czech cooking is great! Delicious dumplings, meats, potatoes, and better sauerkraut than I've ever seen in Germany 🥬

These meals were at Krčma u Parašutistů and Havelská Koruna - the second one is very central but fills up quick at peak times! 👀

Coffee is great in Prague - pictures here taken and

often served with a range of great desserts including blueberries, or honey cake - just don't pay over 50CZK for an espresso 😉

is a cheaper beer than Urquell, and pretty similar in quality 🍻

Arriving in Berlin by night train? 🌃 🚆

There's a good chance you're arriving into Berlin Hauptbahnhof - not the only big station in the city, but the newest and biggest for express rail connections 🚄

The U5 connects right to the city centre, but you can also walk to the Brandenburg Gate and Reichstag nearby - here's what it looks like in early March 🌅

You also have S Bahn connections nearby, with new options coming soon as existing routes are redirected into new tunnels under the Hbf - Potsdamer Platz is also convenient, and the old U Bahn lines like the U2 have some beautiful archeitecture on them! 🚇

Exploring Arnhem after a great work trip with - seeing the city that remains lively and unique despite needing so much postwar rebuilding 🌇

Interesting churches, small streets, nightlife, and trolleybuses pulling into the central station 🚎🚉

Great train connections, right next to the station - worth a visit, and easy to do as a midpoint between Amsterdam and Düsseldorf! 🇳🇱🇩🇪

Ok, so it has the Schwebebahn - but is Wuppertal actually a town worth seeing in itself? 🤔 Yes, actually! 👍 I went here for work (and to see the monorail 😆), and had only heard bad things. imagine my surprise when Wuppertal turned out to be a town with some very nice sides to it! It's no Heidelberg, but Wuppertal still has some old cobbled streets and older architecture, all the shops you need, nice bakeries, green areas, the river - all extremely well connected by train to the rest of Germany 🚆🇩🇪 So while you might not plan a holiday all around it, you should know Wuppertal would make a nice stop on a trip across Germany - it's more than just a monorail! 🚟 #SummerHolidays #VisitGermany #Nordrheinwestfalen #VisitWuppertal #TheRuhr #Monorail
