Gimsøystraumen bridge, seen from Svarttind, the tallest peak at Gimsøy (767m).

The concrete bridge is 839 metres (2,753 ft) long, the main span is 148 metres (486 ft), and the maximum clearance to the sea is 30 metres (98 ft). The bridge has 9 spans. Gimsøystraumen bridge was opened in 1981. It is one of many bridges that connect the islands of Lofoten to each other as part of the European route E10 highway.

Together with the Sundklakkstraumen bridge (opened in 1976), it replaced the ferry route between Lyngvær on Austvågøya, Smorten on Vestvågøya, and Sundklakk on Gimsøya. The ferry connection was put into operation in 1955.

Morning swim at Lillevik's beach. It's not a big beach, and it's a bit rocky and with seaweed, but there's a nice runway with sandy bottom. There’s sun all day, and you’ll be completely alone. Larger beaches like Hov beach and Vinje beach are just a few minutes bike ride away.

It's ski touring high season in Lofoten, and the conditions are fantastic right now! 🏔️⛷️☀️

Lillevik Lofoten is a great base for ski touring, with lots(!) of peaks just a short drive away. You're away from the crowds in Henningsvær, etc, but close enough if you want to go out for dinner or drinks - or just sightseeing and hikes.

At Lillevik you can see the northern lights just outside the house (no need to go "hunting"), and relax in the comfortable sofas by the panorama windows. You can see both northern lights and sea eagles right from the sofa - see the photo gallery for more: https://lilleviklofoten.no/gallery/

Hiring a local guide is recommended. The snowpack in Lofoten is not the same as for instance the Alps, and the coastal climate means that the weather changes quickly.

The Northern lights (aurora borealis) can be seen in Lofoten from September until April.

The Kp index is not relevant Lofoten, as Lofoten is under the "aurora oval". A high Kp index means that northern lights can be seen further south, but that's irrelevant if you are in Lofoten. Most aurora apps rely heavily on the Kp index, and are not useful. To see northern lights in Lofoten you only need a clear view of the sky, and to be somewhere dark (outside of the towns). And you need solar activity. The sun's 11-year cycle means that there will be a solar maximum in 2024-2027, and extra strong northern lights: https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/solar-cycle-progression

If you are in Lofoten, there is no need to go anywhere else to see northern lights. Some good places are Gimsøy, Flakstad, Ramberg and Uttakleiv.

Stormy night at Gimsøy in Lofoten! We have 28 m/s wind (101 km/h) and rain, which is just about the perfect conditions for cozying up in the new sofas with a good book, some quality wine and fire in the fireplace. 🔥🍷

The tiny island is right on the main road E10, and is famous for Anitas Seafood, Sakrisøy Antikk og Brukthandel - Antique shop, Sakrisoy Rorbuer, Sakrisøy Gjestegård and more. Sakrisøy is near Reine, and it's a scenic 1:40 drive from Lillevik Lofoten.

If you stay at Lillevik there's no need to go on an organized "aurora hunting" tour, just go outside - or you can stay inside by the fireplace and see it through the panorama windows. 😍 ⁣

Btw: The polar night is not completely dark in Lofoten: The dawn and dusk merges into a very long twilight period, where the dawn gradually becomes dusk, with some lovely, soft light during the day (depends on the time of year, of course). Some people call it the "light season" instead of the "dark season". So, although there is no sun for a while, there is definitely some very nice light.
