The Oslo Opera House is one of Oslo's architectural masterpieces, designed to resemble a glacier floating in the Oslofjord. Located next to the railway station, this striking edifice is one of the must-see things in Oslo.

Come here to get a spectacular city view from the building's roof! And yes, you can access it without ever setting foot in the opera house.

By the way, the building's acoustics make it popular among both opera troupes and metal bands!

So, whenever you're visiting Oslo, don't forget to add this place to your itinerary! ;)

Established in 1811, the University of Oslo is the oldest higher education institution in Norway. And its Faculty of Law, located in the heart of the city on Karl Johans gate, is an architectural masterpiece.

Visitors are welcome to enter the University Aula to admire the impressive frescoes by Edvard Munch, as long as they do not disrupt the students. By the way, many of our city tours begin at this historic site. ;)

Situated in the heart of Norway's vibrant capital, the Grand Hotel is one of the city's iconic landmarks. The hotel opened its doors for the first time in 1874 and has welcomed countless distinguished guests throughout its history. Even Henrik Ibsen used to have his morning coffee at the on-site café.

Every year, the laureates of the Nobel Peace Prize, awarded in Oslo, are accommodated in this hotel.

Akershus Fortress is an ancient castle on the bank of Oslofjord that has protected the city for centuries. But apart from this, did you know that Akershus has several interesting museums? ;)

The Armed Forces Museum is the country's main military museum and tells about the country's conflicts and wars — from the Viking Age all the way until the present time.

Norway's Resistance Museum narrates about the period of World War II and the N**i occupation of Norway. Here, you can find equipment, photos, and documents from the war years on display.

Oslo Cathedral, known among the locals simply as Dom, is the main church of Oslo. It is a popular cultural and religious attraction located on Karl Johans gate, the city's central two-lane street. :)

After the great fire decimated Oslo in 1624 and the city was moved westwards, the previous church fell into disrepair and decay. A new cathedral was needed, and after a short-lived church had burned down 50 years after construction, the current Oslo Cathedral was built.

And what is your favorite attraction in the Norwegian capital? ;) Let us know what you think in the comments below! :)

When planning your trip to Oslo and thinking about where to stay, there are several popular neighborhoods where you can look for accommodation. Here is a summary of Oslo’s neighborhoods:

Sentrum. The city’s historic center is arguably the best place to stay in Oslo. All of the major attractions are within walking distance, and there are many hotels (including world-famous chains), cafés, restaurants, nightclubs, boutiques, groceries, and everything else that you might need.
The downside of staying here is, obviously, the price. But there are quite a few moderately priced, smaller hotels.

Aker Brygge & Tjuvholmen. Aker Brygge, a popular venue among locals, is located along the fjordside, not far from the city center (Oslo City Hall is the nearest attraction).
Today, this area abounds with kitsch boutiques and high-end restaurants, so the hotel prices are somewhat similar to those in Sentrum. But if you are looking to book a room with a fjord view, this area is the best place to stay in Oslo.

Gamle. Located in the city’s east, near the modern Oslo Opera House and the Barcode Project, this part of Oslo was developed relatively recently. Today, Gamle is a large, modern district with many public parks and comfortable accommodations.
Even though the area is not far from Sentrum, hotel prices in Gamle are noticeably lower. And given the city’s reliable, state-of-the-art system of public transport, you can freely book your accommodation here without worrying about getting to the historic center.

Frogner. The wealthy neighborhood of Frogner is located southwest of the city center, and this area is preferred by business travelers and some tourists. The area is best known for the park of the same name, which is home to the world-famous Vigeland Installation.
One advantage of staying in this area is that there are many three-star hotels with quite affordable prices. Local bars and restaurants are also much more affordable than in Sentrum, but they do tend to get booked quickly. Besides, you can easily travel from this neighborhood to Bygdøy, a popular tourist destination, by bus.

In mid-November, Oslo begins to take on a more festive look, and Christmas markets start to pop up around the city. Jul i Vinterland, the main Christmas market at Spikersuppa, is the main festive attraction in the Norwegian capital. If you find yourself in Oslo around this time, make sure to check it out. ;)

At Spikersuppa, you can enjoy traditional Norwegian treats, browse seemingly endless wooden stalls to buy gifts for your family, go ice skating at the local rink, or admire the spectacular views from the Ferris wheel. Visiting this Christmas market in Oslo is a must-do thing in winter. ;)

By the way, we also offer a special Christmas walking tour. Check it out in the comments on this post or our website. ;)

When it comes to traveling to Oslo in winter, there are a few things to keep in mind when planning your journey:

Temperature. Obviously, it’s much colder in winter, as the temperatures in Oslo average around 0°C in winter. So, plan to spend less time outdoors and more time indoors, such as in museums, restaurants, cafés, and other establishments.

Ferry. The ferry schedule changes in winter, too. The intervals between ferry rides are bigger, so consider getting to Bygdøy on a bus.

Daylight. Obviously, the daylight hours are much shorter in winter, so you need to see the city’s major attractions outdoors before it gets dark. Plan your 1-day Oslo itinerary accordingly.

Christmas. Plan your trip to Oslo in late November or anytime in December. At this time, the city’s atmosphere becomes festive. Christmas markets and ice rinks start popping up all over Oslo. It’s a unique time to be in Oslo! Don’t miss your chance to visit a Christmas market, taste traditional Norwegian Christmas foods, drink the warming Gløgg, and buy gifts for your family and friends.

Join us on the Discover Christmas Spirit in Oslo Tour. Get an insider's look at one of the city's Christmas markets, which are renowned for their beautiful gifts, warming alcoholic drinks, and cheerful ambiance. You can book the tour on our website on any date.

Often referred to as “Norway’s Christmas town,” Drøbak is cozily located on the shore of Oslofjord. Known for its colorful wooden houses and Tregaarden's Julehus (the Christmas House), this town is a great destination if you want to take a fjord trip from Oslo (a 1.5-hour-long ferry will take you there)!

Besides, Drøbak's idyllic surroundings offer plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities. You can explore the coastline, go hiking in the nearby forests, or relax on one of the many beaches. The town's friendly atmosphere, quaint shops, and cozy cafes augment the charming atmosphere of a somewhat special small Norwegian town.
