Bankplassen, or the Bank Square, is a place in Oslo's historic Kvadraturen district named after the building depicted in this photo. Located at Bankplassen 3, it housed Norway's Central Bank from 1906 to 1986. Though, it is curious that the building is much older than that and dates back to the 1830s — the country's central bank was headquartered in Trondheim back then.

In 1986, the institution was relocated to the newly constructed building nearby, at Bankplassen 2. Nowadays, this historic edifice is nowadays used by the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design.

The Barcode Project in eastern Oslo, just next to the railway station, is a row of multi-purpose highrises that today house the offices of many multinational companies. The project was fully completed only by 2016, but it quickly became a popular place among tourists.

Until the middle of the 19th century, this entire area was underwater. So, it shouldn't be surprising that the remains of nine wrecked ships were found during the completion of the project. Some of the exhibits you can see nowadays in the Norwegian Maritime Museum on Bygdøy. ;)

Over the last several decades, the neighborhood of Bjørvika has undergone a dramatic transformation. What once was a graceless container port has been turned into a modern district, with business centers and modern cultural institutions. The gem of this transformation was the construction of the Oslo Opera House, which has become the Norwegian capital's iconic landmark.

Today, Bjørvika is home to Norway's biggest library, a series of business buildings (known as the Barcode Project), and the recently unveiled MUNCH Museum. Indeed, Oslo possesses a great ability to turn shady neighborhoods into remarkable attractions. ;)

The Oslo Public Library's new building was unveiled in 2020 in the modern Bjørvika neighborhood, next to the Oslo Opera House and MUNCH Museum. This futuristic building is designed in a way that closely ties it to being a public space, and it has won numerous architectural awards. :)

The library features not only an extensive book collection but also everything a modern person may need: a movie theater, gaming zones, media workshops, lounges, and a restaurant. ;)

Frogner Park, known among foreign visitors as Vigeland Park, is fancied by the locals and foreigners alike. This is the world's largest open-air art installation, consisting of 212 bronze and granite sculptures. And a giant monolith in the center of this park draws all the attention of the visitors.

Sentrum, the central neighborhood in Oslo, is a great place for a walk in any season. If you make a trip to Oslo in winter, don't miss visiting the Oslo Opera House and the neighboring MUNCH Museum. The modern Barcode area is also an amazing place to see — especially for those who fancy modern architecture!

But the cherry on the cake would be a walk along Karl Johans gate, the city's double-laned central street, and, from there, to Aker Brygge and the Harbour of Oslo. ;)

Sofienbern Park is barely known to tourists but is fancied and appreciated by the locals. Situated in the trendy neighborhood of Grünerløkka, the park is named after a country villa that had previously stood here. Former owners of that villa, an official Jacob Nielsen and a merchant Niels Rosenberg, had wives named Sophie. Hence the villa's name.

It is also curious that the park's territory was first developed as a cemetery in the mid-19th century. But as the city continued to grow, the territory that once seemed as a city outskirts became closer to the city center. And the authorities deemed it inappropriate for a cemetery to occupy such huge swathes of territory close to the city center.

By the way, what's your favorite park in Oslo? ;) Let us know in the comments below!

This historic building, named Victoria Terrasse, is located within walking distance from the Nobel Peace Center and Aker Brygge. :) The entire complex was built between 1884 and 1890, and even Henrik Ibsen himself lived on the first floor of this edifice during the first several years after construction. ;)

During World War II, this building served as the headquarters of the N**i police and security service in Norway and became infamous for the tortures and executions that occurred there. The Allies attempted to bomb the building twice, but both times missed the target.

Today, Victoria Terrasse is home to Norway's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Oslo Opera House is an extraordinary building that has quickly become the city's symbol. The edifice was completed way ahead of schedule and about 50 million dollars under budget. ;)

Akershus Fortress is an ancient castle on the bank of Oslofjord that has protected the city for centuries. But apart from this, did you know that Akershus has several interesting museums? ;)

The Armed Forces Museum is the country's main military museum and tells about the country's conflicts and wars — from the Viking Age all the way until the present time.

Norway's Resistance Museum narrates about the period of World War II and the N**i occupation of Norway. Here, you can find equipment, photos, and documents from the war years on display.

Holmenkollbakken is a large ski jumping hill located in Oslo's neighborhood of Holmenkollen. The ski jump was completed in 1892 and reconstructed 19 times throughout its history. ;)

Situated in the heart of Oslo, the Faculty of Law of the University of Oslo (pictured) is one of the four original faculties of the Royal Frederick University that was established in 1811. :) The University of Oslo, which received its current name in 1939, is the oldest university in the country and one of the leading educational institutions in Northern Europe.

By the way, the locals nowadays call it just "Universitetet", or "the University". ;)

🎄🎅 Have you ever wondered about Norway's Christmas culinary tradition, Rakfisk (pictured)? Simply put, it's trout, salted and left to ferment in cold storage for two months to a year. Once the necessary prep is done (when the smell is strongest), it's ready to eat. 🍽️

In Norway, it's not just a dish; it's a Christmas tradition, an essential element of the festive feast that brings families together. 🎁🥂 Let Rakfisk's piquant flavors and rich history add an unforgettable touch to your holiday celebrations. :) 🎄

Join our exclusive Christmas tour on your visit to Oslo to learn more about this charming city and the Norwegian Christmas traditions. ;) After the tour, you can roam the city's bustling Christmas markets and find gifts for your friends and family.

Here are the most popular items that people buy at these markets. :)

Knitwear. Norwegians take pride in their old traditions of making sweaters, so this is one of the most regularly sold items at Christmas markets, too. Besides, you can also buy woolen gloves, hats, and scarves!

Reindeer skins. Reindeer skins are quite an unexpected item, but they are popular among locals and tourists (who buy them as souvenirs) alike. The locals typically use reindeer skin as a throw for picnics near fjords or cover benches and chairs with them.

Wooden craftwork. Christmas markets in Oslo typically sell all sorts of craftworks, and there are endless opportunities for you to hunt for unexpected or rare items. Many of these items are handmade, and such a "treasure hunt" tends to be an amazing way to spice up your evening.

Christmas decorations. Naturally, you can also find different types of Christmas decorations at the markets. You can actually find interesting decorations not only at the markets, but also in Glasmagasinet, a department store in the city centre that was opened back in 1899.

Food. Food options are literally unlimited in these markets. In particular, we recommend you look for Norwegian sweets, such as Smorbukk Butter Caramels and sweet thins — their recipes have stayed unchanged for many decades.

And what Christmas gifts do you tend to choose for your family and friends? ;) Don't hesitate to share with us in the comments! :)

It's already November. This month, Oslo turns into a city from a fairy tale and it, at times, seems that people have no other business than just enjoying themselves and celebrating the forthcoming Christmas.

And we offer you an opportunity to soak up the Christmas atmosphere and learn more about the Norwegian traditions on our exclusive Christmas Walking Tour. ;) Just message us or check out our website for details. ;)

And here is information about the most popular Christmas markets in Oslo. :)

Christmas in Winterland in Spikersuppa (November 12 — January 1). Jul i Vinterland, the main Christmas market in Oslo, is opened up in the heart of the city every year. This Christmas market has it all: countless stands with gifts and toys, food stalls serving delicious food and warm drinks, free Christmas activities and concerts. Come here and enjoy the fantastic Christmas vibe!

Christmas market at Stortovet (November 5 — December 23). If the weather isn't great, visit the indoor Christmas market at Stortorvet square (also in the city centre). The market takes place in heated, decorated Sami lavvus, and it's a great option to escape here for a warm drink or embark on a shopping spree if the weather turned nasty.

The Annual Christmas Fair at Norskfolkemuseum (December 3-4, 11-12). The annual fair takes place only during two weekends in December and features over a hundred old-fashioned stalls. This is the place where you can buy Christmas decorations, homemade crafts, gifts for your friends and family, Christmas specialties, and delicious foods. Keep in mind that you need to purchase tickets to enter the fair (you can do it on the website of Oslo city to avoid queuing).

Old-fashioned Christmas at Bærums Verk (November 26 — December 21). Enjoy the Christmas spirit in this market that takes place in 17th-century houses. Here, you can find gifts and handcrafts that aren't sold at any other Christmas market in Norway. And, of course, don't miss out on the local delicacies and warm drinks served at this market!

And have you stayed in Norway during Christmas time? ;) How your experience was? Let us know in the comments! ;)
