Island Bleikøya 🏝️
Bleikøya is an island located in the inner Oslofjord, outside Kongshavn, between Hovedøya and Sjursøya in Oslo, Norway. It has a year-round ferry connection from Rådhusbrygge 4, approximately 2 km away (previously, before March 21, 2015, the boats departed from Vippetangen).

The island is owned by the state, managed by Statsbygg, and designated as a recreational area. It features around 90 small cabins built in the 1920s and 1930s. The farm Bleikøyplassen has been inhabited by the same family since the 1700s.

The name "Bleikøya" is derived from the Old Norse word "bleikr," meaning "light" or "bright." The island is approximately one kilometer long, covering 125 acres, and stretches from southwest to northeast. It is part of the Oslo Rift geological region, characterized by limestone and shale from the Ordovician period.

Bleikøya is surrounded by the islet Daggerskjær to the south, and Bleikøykalven to the north. Both are important breeding areas for seabirds.

In the northeast of the island, there is a 74-acre Bleikøya Nature Reserve, with 69 acres of land. During the breeding season from April 15 to July 15, landing on Bleikøykalven is prohibited.

Historically, Bleikøya was owned by Hovedøya Monastery in the Middle Ages. After the king took over ownership in 1537, the island remained unused until the early 1700s. During the first Norwegian War in 1716, Karl XII's soldiers sought refuge behind the island to shield themselves from cannon fire from Akershus Fortress.

The only farm on Bleikøya, Bleikøyplassen, is located in the northern part and has been inhabited by the same family since the early 1700s. The farm used to engage in farming, grazing, shore fishing, and boat building.

In 1926, the Norwegian Ministry of Agriculture allowed the construction of cabins on the island. The largest allowed ground area for the cabins was initially 25 square meters but was later increased to 32 square meters with a maximum height of 4.8 meters for cabins with lofts, and 40 square meters with a height of 3.6 meters for cabins without lofts.

Today, Bleikøya serves as a popular recreational area with cabins, providing a unique escape for residents and visitors seeking a retreat within the beautiful surroundings of the Oslofjord.
