👋Local tip from Julie:

The Finnish sauna culture has hit Oslo hard, and you’ll find saunas all along the fjord🏊
Watch the corporate city chase the clock, while time stands still inside walls of warm wood🔥
Oslo Badstuforening runs several saunas and I recommend the one at Langkaia. This sauna is in the middle of the modern architectural Oslo and from here you’ll see Bjørvika, the Deichman library, the Opera House and the Munch Museum.
💰Drop-in costs 150 NOK for non-members.
☝️Remember to bring your swimsuit! Yes, you heard us right: Swimsuit. No one is naked in a Norwegian sauna.

👋 Local tip from Brage:

As Jim Jarmusch’s cult classic ☕️Coffee and Ci******es🚬 is one of my favourite movies, I was happy to hear about a place called Coffee & Ci******es that was opening in Oslo this year👍
In the morning it's a café, and in the evening it's a bar. This is your opportunity to experience Oslo like a local moviestar✨
🎥 In the movie, there aren't really any main characters, just a bunch of cool, weird, random people talking about life, ideas, dreams and everything in between. While you’re there, imagine that you’re a character in the movie, or that the movie plays itself out right in front of you.

👋 Local tip from Emilie:

Do you want to make the most out of those long bright summer evenings?☀️
I love the Scandinavian summer and St. Hanshaugen park is perhaps the best place in Oslo to experience it🌺
I recommend you to bring a blanket and a basket filled with picnic essentials and watch the sun set (at 22:41 1st of July)🍱🥨🥖🍒🍉🍇🧃
The feeling of contentment always hits me in the park, watching the sky go from red to purple, absorbering the moment of summer🌇
PS. This dream might burst if you go here on a saturday night. It is not quite as romantic when the park is filled with hammered young adults, barking and yelling ugly Norwegian words. But then again, who says no to a summer party in the park? The sun will send you home (at 04:01 2nd of July)🥴

Close to the Vigeland Park you find Majorstuen, a place known for old money and old architecture🏛️
A famous Norwegian poet, André Bjerke, lived here, in Jacob Aalls gate. He wrote the poem The Autumn of Oslo, where he personified the autumn in Oslo, depicting it as a crisp, elusive woman dressed in a red ball gown🍂 In the autumn this woman shows herself on the walls of Majorstuen, covering the buildings in sharp red virginia creeper🍁
I like to enjoy my coffee and sit on the bench at the end of Jacob Alls gate, while I imagine the lived life of old poets in this neighbourhood☕️

👋 Local tip from Jakob:

If you are intrigued by the brown pub culture, you should get your beer at Valkyrien restaurant (or Valka as the locals call it)🍻
This is a historical place, and a bit of an odd one at that. It’s known to be Leon Trotsky’s preferred spot for a brew during his amnesty in Norway. It’s weird in all the right ways, and in my opinion, the best surroundings for discussing Das Kapital🤓
On Wednesdays there is usually a local quintet playing folk music🎻

Meet our graphical designer, Synne 🌻The design of this year’s map is inspired by Oslo’s architectural features. The colors used in the design are carefully chosen from Oslo’s new color palette, hence creating a map as colorful as our city. If you look around whilst using the map, you can see that the colors in the map resembles the actual colors of the buildings in the streets.

If you are looking for a place to sing karaoke and you don't want to sing in front of an audience, you can book private rooms for karaoke at Syng. Osloites go here to sing their hearts out and regret it all the next day. Once you've been to Syng, you know that behind every closed door, there is a group of drunk people singing out their failed careers as artists. It might be an unsettling picture, but three beers from sober, you’ll see the door close behind you, realising that you've already passed the point of no return.

It is the entrance that sets the vibe at the Mexican restaurant La Mayor. It is quite anonymous, and you might have to spend some time looking for the right entrance door. In the hallway you will be met with teak walls and 60s patterns. The smell of old smoke might make you wonder if you are entering a time where the To***co Act isn’t thought of yet. The teak walls will follow you into the restaurant, but the air of old smoke will disappear and fold into a much warmer atmosphere. We recommend ordering the scallops and the margaritas.

«Jeg elsker høsten i Oslos gater, for ingen by har høst som den»

A famous Norwegian poet, Andre Bjerke, lived his life in this building at the west side of Oslo, Majorstuen. He has written a poem called Oslohøst, meaning «The Atumn of Oslo». In this poem he humanize the fall in Oslo and depicts it as a crisp, subitaneous woman dressed in a red ball gown.

Do you agree with his pictorial description? 🍂🍁

Say hello to Ann Helen and check out her local hit: seasonal swimming 🧜‍♀️🧜‍♀️

🌊Guess you didn’t expect Oslo to be a city for the aquaphile. There’s always an occasion for the perfect bath in Oslo, both in summer and winter! My favourite place for a swim is Tjuvholmen. It’s super central, so I go here during the sunrise before work, together with the rich people living here, like the legendary old lady who goes for a bath every morning donning her bathrobe, slippers and coffee cup.

Say hello to Aden and check out his local hit: Waaberi🫖🍌

😋 Whenever I’m longing for a taste of Somalia, I go to Waaberi. It’s the best place for both breakfast, lunch and dinner, at a fair price. My favourite dish is liver, which is a common Somali breakfast. Don’t be surprised about the banana, we eat it with everything! Every meal comes with free tea, a sweet and spiced favourite.

Say hello to Ane and check out her fauvorite place in Oslo: Kingos 4 📚

💪Whenever I feel inspired, creative or ready to change the world (and want a good book that reflects this mood), I stop by Kingos 4. This second hand bookstore might be perceived as humble at first glance, but once you step inside, you will find that the shop is all but unassertive. They have a vast selection of literature especially curated to reflect diverse, intersectional and feminist perspectives. Behind the concept stands two idealistic women who have made inclusive literature their life mission.

Say hello to Emilie and check out her favourite place in Oslo: Old Aker Church ⛪️

👋 I am a geek when it comes to Oslo’s history, so I always take my visitors to see Old Aker Church. It was built in the 1100s and is the oldest standing building in Oslo. According to the old tale Historia Norvegia, the church rests on four pillars of gold that surround a treasure guarded by a dragon. I am so impressed by the building, its history and the location. Bring a book and a coffee and enjoy the mesmerising view over the east side of the city among the flowers and trees.

Our most famous painter, Edvard Munch, got a new home in 2021 when the MUNCH museum moved to Bjørvika. We think the building most resembles a crash barrier, but inside you’ll find thirteen floors of art and culture, including a rotating show of different versions of The Scream, and an interactive exhibition where you can walk through a model of Munch’s home Ekely. Admission is 100 - 160 NOK.

How many cheese lovers can you fit into a hole in the wall?🧀👩‍❤️‍👩 Well, if you love cheese as much as we do, you don’t mind sitting on a stranger’s lap during the meal. This place started out as a tiny cheese store and has evolved into an even tinier restaurant. At Ostebutikken almost everything on the menu is served with cheese, of course. We don't know if it’s because of the intimate atmosphere or the dopamine produced while eating cheese, but something about it makes us Osloites feel more continental.

Rosenhoff is one of our favourite places to take a Sunday stroll, with its cluster of old wooden houses and the allotment garden at the heart of it. In one of the little wooden buildings 21-year-old Sverre has revived Rosenhoff Kiosk, where his parents met back in the day. He makes top notch lasagna, tiramisu and focaccia, along with more classic snacks like hot dogs 🤌🍕🍝

In the shadows of the new Munch museum, among concrete buildings in more than 50 shades of grey, lies Bispevika, a pop of colour, so close to the central station you can go from being a train passenger to a swimmer in seven minutes flat. Sit down by the pier for a nice view of the fjord or go for a swim in the shadow of Munch.

Come and have a radler in the sunny biergarten by the Akerselva river. Everyone between 1 and 100 years old is welcome here. St. Pauli Biergarten is part of the old people’s home Paulus, located in the floors above in the same building. The residents sometimes come down for a beer and a chat with the local youth or families having a break on their river walk. It’s open all summer from 14:00, when the weather allows it.

Our Story

USE-IT is tourist info for young people, in almost 40 cities in Europe. We all publish free maps, most of us have a page, some have a website, or even run an info desk for young travellers. And we're all working hard to get our cities into the smartphone app as soon as possible.

What do we stand for? • USE-IT is made by locals: we don't work with travel journalists but with locals. • USE-IT is not commercial: nobody pays to be included on the maps. • USE-IT maps are free. You find them in hostels and tourist infos. • USE-IT is for young travellers: no 5-star hotels, no fancy dinners. • USE-IT is up-to-date: new editions are made every year. • USE-IT is not a trendy guide, it's about the life and soul of the city. • USE-IT is honest: no publicity, no marketing nonsense.
